7 Claims, 5 Drawing Figures PAIENTEBFEB29 I972 .Hunizmger $5 BY W PRIOR ART IGNITION DISTRIBUTOR BREAKER CONTACT SET This invention is directed to ignition distributor breaker contact sets and, more particularly, to an ignition distributor breaker contact set which reduces a particular form of radiofrequency radio receiver interference.
In automotive type radio receiver installations wherein the radio antenna is in close proximity to the ignition distributor, a particular form of radiofrequency interference may be experienced. This particular form of radiofrequency interference is characterized by a random, popping nature which is quite different from the repetitive noise usually associated with the high-potential spark plug discharge. An extensive investigation revealed that this particular form of radiofrequency interference is produced across the ignition distributor breaker contacts.
It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide an improved ignition distributor breaker contact set.
It is another object of this invention to provide an improved ignition distributor breaker contact set which reduces a particular form of radiofrequency radio receiver interference which is generated across the ignition distributor breaker contacts.
In accordance with this invention, an improved ignition distributor breaker contact set is provided wherein the outer conductive casing of a capacitor, which provides one electrical terminal therefor, is in electrical contact with a slotted conductive tab member, to which is secured one breaker contact, extending substantially normal to a conductive support member and an elongated strip of electrically conductive material, extending substantially parallel to a pivotally mounted breaker arm to which the other breaker contact is secured from a point on the breaker arm between the pivot and the breaker contact at which one end is electrically connected to the breaker ann, terminates adjacent an opening through an insulating member located in the slot of the tab member where it is electrically connected to the other electrical terminal of the capacitor which extends through the opening through the insulating member.
For a better understanding of the present invention, together with additional objects, advantages and features thereof, reference is made to the following description and accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a top view of the improved ignition distributor breaker contact set of this invention;
FIG. 2 is a section view of FIG. 1 taken along line 2-2 and looking in the direction of the arrows;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of an elongated strip of electrically conductive material used in the ignition distributor breaker contact set of this invention;
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of FIGS. 1 and 2; and
FIG. 5 is a top view of a prior art ignition distributor breaker contact set and associated capacitor.
Referring to the prior art ignition distributor breaker contact set and associated capacitor set forth in FIG. 5, as the breaker contacts 5 and 5a begin to be separated by the action of the breaker cam, not shown, the current which has been passing through the ignition coil primary winding, not shown, is interrupted in a manner well known in the automotive art. Consequently, the potential across the ignition coil primary winding, the open ignition distributor breaker contacts and the capacitor 2 increases at a rate which is determined by the various parameters of the ignition system. With certain conditions, the potential across the ignition distributor breaker contacts may exceed the breakover potential of the opening contacts causing an arc to be established thereacross. This arc provides a path through which the charge stored in the capacitor 2 may rapidly discharge. Peak currents of 100 amperes or more for a portion of a microsecond are typical of this discharge energy. It is this release of energy which produces the random popping interference. The flow of this discharge current through the substantially circular loop circuit of lead 3 of capacitor 2, breaker contact spring 4, breaker contact arm 6, the arc across contacts 5 and 5a and baseplate 7 to the other plate of capacitor 2 creates an electromagnetic field and the loop circuit serves as an efficient radiating antenna. The improved ignition distributor breaker contact set of this invention not only reduces the area enclosed by this loop but divides the circuit into two small loops and places the conductors through which this discharge current flows in close proximity to each other. Consequently, this discharge current flows in opposite directions through parallel conductors, a condition which substantially cancels the magnetic field and, hence, eliminates the radiated energy.
The ignition distributor breaker contact set of this invention comprises a support member 15 of electrically conductive material to which one breaker contact is secured in electrical contact, a pivotally mounted distributor breaker arm 30 of electrically conductive material to which another breaker contact 10b is secured in electrical contact which is operable to place the breaker contact secured thereto into electrical contact engagement with the breaker contact secured to thesupport member, a capacitor 40 having a first electrically conductive electrical terminal in electrical contact with the support member and a second electrically conductive terminal insulated from the first terminal and an electrical conductor, to be later described, extending substantially parallel to the breaker arm 35 from a point on the breaker arm between the pivot 31 and the breaker contact 10b at which one end thereof is electrically connected to the breaker arm to the second electrically conductive terminal of capacitor 40 to which the other end is electrically connected.
Referring to FIGS. 1 through 4 of the drawings, and without intention or inference of a limitation thereto, one practical embodiment of the ignition distributor breaker contact set of this invention actually'practiced is set forth and includes a support member 15 of electrically conductive material, a slotted tab member 20 of electrically conductive material to which one breaker contact 10a is secured in electrical contact extending substantially normal to support member 15, an insulating member 25 having an opening 26 therethrough positioned in slot 21 of tab member 20, a pivotally mounted breaker arm 30 of electrically conductive material to which another breaker contact 10b is secured in electrical contact which is operable to place the breaker contact 10b secured thereto into electrical contact engagement with the breaker contact 10a secured to tab member 20, an elongated strip of electrically conductive material 35 extending substantially parallel to breaker arm 30 from a point on breaker arm 30 between pivot 31 and breaker contact 10b at which one end thereof is electrically connected to breaker arm 30 and terminating adjacent the opening 26 through insulating member 25 and a capacitor 40 having an electrically conductive casing 41 in electrical contact with one face 22 of tab member 20 and an electrically conductive post 42 electrically insulated from casing 41 forming the other electrical terminal therefor extending through opening 26 through insulating member 25 and in electrical contact with the other end of the elongated strip of electrically conductive material 35.
Without intention or inference of a limitation thereto, support member 15 and tab member 20 are shown in the FIGURES to be fabricated from a single piece of electrically conductive material with tab member 20 bent at right angles to support member 15 to provide a support member of electrically conductive material having an integral slotted tab portion extending substantially normal thereto. It is to be specifically understood, however, that this invention is not to be limited to this single-piece integral support and tab member construction.
Insulating member 25 may be fabricated of any suitable insulating material such as glass-filled Nylon. So that insulating member 25 may be positioned in and retained by slot 21 of tab 20, it may be provided with slots 27 and 28 which are dimensioned to snugly engage that portion of both face surfaces of tab 20 which surround slot 21. Insulating member 25 is inserted in slot 21 of tab 20 to a depth which will substantial] completely fill slot 21 as is best seen in FIG. 2.
The distributor breaker arm 30 is fabricated of electrically conductive material and is pivotally mounted about pivot 31. Distributor breaker arm 30 is operable to place the breaker contact b, secured in electrical contact to the free end thereof, into electrical .contact engagement with the breaker contact 10a secured to tab member under the influence of breaker contact leaf spring 32. This is, spring 32 operates dis- 'opening 36 through one end thereof and a breaker contact clearance opening which may be a longitudinal slot 37. The elongated strip of electrically conductive material 35 extends substantially parallel to distributor breaker arm from a point on breaker arm 30 between pivot 31 and breaker contact 10b at which one end thereof is electrically connected to breaker arm 30 and terminates adjacent opening 26 through insulating member 25. One convenient method of securing one end of the elongated strip of electrically conductive material 35 opposite the end having opening 36 therethrough to distributor breaker arm 30 is through the rivet 38 which secures rubbing block 34 to distributor breaker arm 30. Rivet 38 may pass through hole 39 to maintain this end of elongated strip 35 in intimate electrical contact with distributor breaker arm 30. With this arrangement, the longitudinal slot 37 provides clearance for that portion of distributor breaker arm 30 between rivet 38 and contact 10b and for breaker contact 1012 to extend therethrough so that it may engage breaker contact 10a.
The electrically conductive casing 41 which provides one electrical terminal for an automotive type capacitor is placed in electrical contact with one face 22 of tab 20 and an electrically conductive post 42 which provides the other electrical terminal for capacitor 40 extends through opening 26 in insulating member 25 and through opening 36 in the elongated strip of electrically conductive material 35. In the drawings, the hole 36 in one end of the elongated strip of electrically conductive material 35 is shown to be an open slot. It is to be specifically understood that any other suitable opening which will accommodate .post 42 may be employed without departing from the spirit of this invention.
As face 29 of insulating member 25 is located between the electrically conductive casing 41 of capacitor 40 and face 22 of tab 20, provision is made for placing the electrically conductive casing 41 in electrical contact with face 22 of tab 20. One method of providing this electrical contact is to blank or slug three dimples 50, 51 and 52 from tab member 20 of sufficient depth to clear face 29 of insulating member 25. In the drawings, three dimples have been shown to be punched or slugged from tab member 20. It is to be specifically understood that this invention is not to be limited to this number or arrangement as any arrangement which provides an adequate electrical contact between electrically conductive casing 41 and tab member 20 may be provided.
To maintain electrically conductive casing 41 of capacitor 40 in electrical contact with face 22 of tab 20 and the elongated strip of electrically conductive material 35 in electrical contact with conductive post 42, a fastening device of the type having an opening which will operatively engage the threads of post 42 is provided.
In assembling the distributor breaker contact set of this invention, electrically conductive post 42 of capacitor 40 is placed through opening 26 in insulating member 25 and opening 36 in the elongated strip of electrically conductive strip 35 and the thread accommodating opening in fastening member 45. Capacitor 40 is then revolved in a direction which will tighten fastening member 45 upon the threads of electrically conductive post 42 until fastening member 45 will snugly maintain the electrically conductive casing 41 of capacitor 40 in electrical contact with face 22 of tab 20 and the elongated strip of electrically conductive material 35 in electrical contact with electrically conductive post 42 of capacitor 40.
With this arrangement, in the event of an arc across opening distributor breaker contacts 10a and 10b, the discharge current may be traced from electrically conductive post 42 of capacitor 40 through the elongated strip of electrically conductive material 35, rivet 38, that portion of ignition distributor breaker arm 30 between rivet 38 and breaker contact 10b secured thereto, the arc across breaker contacts 10b and 10a through clearance slot 37 in elongated strip 35 and tab member 20 to the electrically conductive casing 41 of capacitor 40. This discharge circuit provides two loops, each of which defines an area which is quite small and which produces magnetic fields of opposite polarity to provide a cancellation thereof and, furthermore, the discharge current of one loop passes in opposite directions through closely parallel conductors, breaker arm 30 and elongated strip of electrically conductive material 35, to cancel out any magnetic field produced thereby. These two factors substantially eliminate the particular radiofrequency radio interference produced across ignition distributor breaker contacts 10a and 10b.
While a preferred embodiment of the present invention has been shown and described, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various modifications and substitutions may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention which is to be limited only within the scope of the appended claims.
