Pat. No. 3,013,755 for Intake for Water Supplies issued Dec. 19, 1961.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The prior art as disclosed in applicants former patent contemplated only the use of the device for holding the inlet to the hose at a certain level above the bottom of the pond from which the water was to be taken so as to prevent mud and foreign material from entering the hose. The instant invention contemplates the same use and in addition to be used to hold the hose in discharge position thereby reducing the manpower necessary to put out the fire.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of a hose holder illustrating an embodiment of the invention.
FIG. 2 is an end elevational view of the structure shown in FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a plan view of the structure shown in FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary plan sectional view taken on line 4 4 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary elevational sectional view taken on line 55 of FIG. 3 and drawn to a greater scale.
The hose holder is indicated in its entirety by the reference character A and which includes a circumambient supporting structure 111 including a hoop 11 of suitable diameter to support the hose in proper position for use. The upper part of the hoop 11 has a cutout 12 and the lower part of the hoop has a cutout 13 which divides the hoop into two spaced sections 14 and 15. The ends 16 and 17 of the sections 14 and 15 are bent down to form spaced legs while the ends 21 and 22 of said sections are bent to lie in a common plane.
The legs 16 and 17 are secured to a base 30 which comprises a frame 31 which is rectangular in form and is constructed of flat band iron bent to form side members 32 and 33 and end members 34 and 35. Attached to the upper edges of the frame members 32, 33, 34 and 35 is a grating 36 and which forms a platform on which the operators may place a foot to hold the hose holder in hose discharge position.
Opposite the base 30 and in the cutout 12 is mounted a hose clamp 40. This clamp comprises a U-shaped jaw 41 whose ends have welded to them coplanar flanges 42 and 43. These flanges overlie plates 44 and 45 welded to the ends 21 and 22 of hoop 11. Bolts 46 and 47 extend through arcuate slots 51 and 52 in the flanges 42 and 43 and through the plates 44 and 45 and the ends 21 and 22 of the hoop 11 to support the clamp 41) in adjusted position.
Extending across the upper portions of the sections 14 and 15 of hoop 1 1 is a brace 53. A plate 54 is secured to the same immediately below the jaw 41 of hose clamp 40. A bolt 55 with a countersunk head 56 passes through the jaw 41 and through the plate 54 and has mounted on it a nut 57 and a locknut 53 and journals the jaw 41 for swinging movement. The brace 53 is reinforced intermediate its ends by two posts 61 and 62 welded to it and to the hoop 11 adjoining the cutout 12.
The hose clamp 40 has a companion jaw 63 which is mounted on. the end of a hand screw 64 by means of a balland-socket joint 66 disposed between said screw and jaw. The screw 64 is screwed into a threaded boss 65, issuing outwardly from the jaw 41. A pin 67 issuing from jaw 63 passes through a hole 63 in jaw 41 and keeps the jaw 63 from rotating as it is ad vanced toward the hose being clamped.
Two other bases 70 and 71 are employed which are disposed on opposite sides of the hoop 14 and between the base 30 and the clamp 40. These bases merely consist of channel members 72 disposed with their flanges extending outwardly and welded to the hoop sections 14 and 15. Legs 73 extend between the ends of said angle members and said sections and have portions 74 extending between flanges of the channel members and feet 75 overlying the hoop 11. The various parts of these bases are welded to one another and to the hoop.
To reinforce the hose holder to braces 76 and 77 are disposed within the confines of the hoop 11 and welded at their ends to the sections 14 and 15 of hoop 11 at their inner surfaces.
If desired, fixed hose clamps 80 similar to clamp 41) for different sizes of hose may be attached to the hoop 11 between the braces 76 and 77.
In use as a holder for the intake end of the hose, the hose holder is inverted and held with the hose clamp 40 the proper distance above the ground. The hose is then inserted into the clamp and screw 64 is tightened. When the hose holder with hose attached is lowered into the pond the same can rest on the flanges 42 and 43, on one or the other of the bases 30, 71) and 72 or on a combination of the same to procure different heights of the hose intake above the bottom of the pond. When the hose holder is to be used to support the end of the hose to which the nozzle is attached the hose holder is disposed as shown in the drawings with the base 31] resting on the ground. The hose is then applied as stated. The user then places one foot on the platform 36 to hold the hose holder in position and then swings the hose in the desired direction, the hose clamp 40 accommodating such movement by its pivotal connection to the brace 53. When up and down adjustment of the stream of water is desired the entire hose holder may be tilted back or forth.
The advantages of the invention are manifest. The holder can be used either at the intake end] of the hose or at the discharge end of the same. When use at the discharge end, the holder reduces the manpower necessary to direct the stream of water and also reduces the strain on the man or men direct ing the stream.
