To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM P. LATHAM, of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Oider-P1-'ess, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a press or mill adapted more particularly for pressing or grinding apples in cider-dunking, but applicable for use in pressing orgrinding other sub stances; and the invention has for its object to provide asimplc, inexpensive, and effective machine of this character which may be operated with economy of time and labor.
The invention consists in certain novel features ofconsiruction and combinations ofparts of the press, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed. 4

Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal partly sectional elevation of my improved press; and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, with the rollercase in horizontal section and the roller-gear ing indicated in dotted lines.
The frame A of the press or mill may have any suitable construction adapted to support the operating parts of the machine hereinafter described. 7
The case B of the press is held to the frame and in it arejournaled three vertically-ranging rollers, O D E, which revolve quite closely to each other and to the side walls of the case. (See Fig. 2.) The case has an opening in the side next the rollers O D, through which opening a conveyer-pipe, F, passes, and the end of this pipe is shaped to fit quite closely to the periphery of the rollers. The pipe F projects outward some little distance from the roller-case and may have support in any suitable manner from the frame A of the machine.

from beneath the hopper G quite to the press rollers O D, and the shaft and blade H I thus form a conveyer-screw which forces the apples along from the hopper to the roller-case when the shaft is turned.
To the shaft 0 ofthe roller O there is fixed a gear-wheel, J,which meshes with a gear-wheel, K, on the shaft (Z of roller D, and also with a gear-wheel, L, on the shaft 6 of roller E, and whereby when the shaft 0 is turned by means of'a sweep (not shown) held to a socket or head-block, M, also fixed to the shaft 0, the rollers O D E will be turned in direction of their arrows 1 2 3 respectively. (See Fig. 2 of the drawings.)
A cider discharge-spout, N, is fitted in the side of the case 13 between the rollers D E,and a spout or opening, 0, is provided in the case between the rollers O E for discharge of the pressed pomace from the machine.
The shaft of one of the rollers extends downward through the press-case B-theroller-shaft cas shown, and to said shaft is fixed a bevel gearwheel, P, which meshes with a bevel gear-wheel, R, fixed to ashaft, S, journaled in boxes 8 s on the frame A, and to the other end of this shaft S there is fixed a bevel gearwheel, T, which engages a bevel gear-wheel, U, fixed to a shaft, V, journaled vertically in the frame A and carrying another bevel gearwheel, W, which in turn meshes with a bevel gear-wheel, X, fixed to the eonveyer-screw shaft H, and whereby as the press-rollers are turned the screw H I will also be turned to automatically feed the apples forward to the pressing-rollers.
It is obvious that in operating the press it is only necessary to handle the apples once when placingjthem in the hopper G, and as the sweep head-block M is turned the rollers O D E will press the juice from the fruit as it is continuously forced to them by the conveyerscrewI-I .I, operated from the rollers, and the juice will flow from the spout N, while the pomace will discharge at the spout 0; hence the press operates very quickly and effectively and maybe worked successfully and economically by unskilled laborers.
\Vith little or no modification-=such, for in stance, as a change in the discharge-openings of the roller-case-the press may be operated successfully 011 other substances besides apples to press or grind them to any. required degree, and by removing the sweep-head M and applying bevel-gearto the shaft 0 and arranging suitable gearing with said bevel-gear the machine may be driven by steam or water power, as will readily be understood.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 18* v 1. The combination, in a press or mill, of a case, aseries of rollers journaled therein, and a feeding device comprising a tube opening to the rollers at the side of the ease and having a feed opening or hopper, and a conveyer-screW adapted for rotation within the tube to force the substances to be ground to the rollers, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, in a press, of a case, a series of rollers journaled therein, a feeding ,device comprising a tube opening to the rollers at the side of the press-case and having a feed opening or hopper, and a conveyor-screw adapted for rotation Within the tube, and gearing connecting the shaft of one of the rollers with the conveyer-screw shaft, substantially as shown and described, whereby as the rollers are operated the feed-screw will be operated to feed the substance to be pressed or ground to the rollers, as set forth.
3. In a press or mill, the combination, with a case, as at B, having suitable outlets, and rollers, as at O D E, journaled in the case, of a tube, F, entering the case negzt the rollers G D and fitted quite closely to the periphery of the said rollers, and a feed-screw, II I, fitted for rotation Within the tube F, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, in a press or mill. of a supporting-frame, a case, B, thereon having outlets N O, rollers G D E, j ournaled vertically in the case and geared to be driven one from the other, a tube, F, opening to the case next the rollers O D, and having a feed opening or hopper, G, a conveyer or feed screw, II I, in the tube F, and gearing, substantially as specified, for operating the feed-screw from one of the press-rollers,substantiall y as described,for the purposes set forth.
