HENRY W. BENEDICT, citizens of the UnitedA States, residing at Danbury, in the County of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Overshoes; and we do hereby declare'that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the anneXed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and effective means ,to prevent a rubber or other overshoe from coming off at the heel; and it consists in an overshoe constructed substantially as shown in the draw# rubber this strip may be formed with it; but, y

it' preferred, it can be made separately and' afterward attached in any well-known manner, and, as previously-stated, may be of any material found best adapted to the purpose. As will be seen, the strip ovcrhangs at its lower edge, and when the heel of the shoe is in place the edge of the strip will come or project in the hollow of the heel, asshownin Fig. l, thereby holding the overshoe in place and preventing it from Working off. A very simple means is provided for this purpose, that will not materially increase the cost of manufacture and will securely retain the overshoe in place.

It will beseen that the confining-strip C is formed with or connected directly to the inner side of the back or heel portion of theshoe above the tread of the-heel, and extends in a horizontal direction to the sides of the heel,in e'ontradistinction to the upright spring-clasps heretofore in use, thereby strengthening and stiffening the heel portion of the shoe and rendering it less liable to work loose when upon the foot.

whatwe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f An overshoe provided upon the inner side of the heel portion thereof with an overhanging strip secured to or formed on the back of said heel portion and extending horizontally across the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
