I N VE NTOR ColonCBlock BY @awwmejm 741% DRAWER STOP BACKGROUND AND SUMMARY Drawers have been equipped with flexible straps serving as stop members. the straps having an upwardly extending portion for engagement with a beam at the forward end of the desk opening or recess and the strap having also a rearwardly extending brace portion extending above or resting on the rear wall of the drawer. Unfortunately, repeated contacts of the stop member with the front beam of the desk recess tend to break the brace and the stop structure has to be required and replaced frequently.
l have discovered that by rabbeting the rear wall of the drawer to provide a recess therein for receiving the rearwardly extending brace, the foregoing difficulty is overcome and the stop device may be used repeatedly without damage to the structure. In the operation, the rearwardly extending brace, which is preferably integral with the stop member, fits within the top recess and is buttressed by contact with the sides about the recess so that the blows received by the stop riser are taken without damage to the stop member.
DRAWING In the accompanying drawing,
FIG. I is a perspective view of a drawer stop, the view being taken from the front side of the structure;
FIG. 2, a view similar to FIG. 1 but taken from the rear of the structure;
FIG. 3, a perspective view ofa drawer equipped with a stop member;
FIG. 4. a broken perspective view of a portion of the rear wall greatly enlarged and provided with a recess;
FIG. 5, a view similar to FIG. 4 but showing the drawer stop in position upon the rear wall of the drawer;
FIG. 6, a broken vertical sectional view showing the stop member in engagement with a front beam or frame member of the desk where it serves to stop the outward movement of the drawer; and
FIG. 7. a view similar to FIG. 6 but showing the stop member bent downwardly to permit release of the drawer from the desk opening.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION In the illustration given, 10 designates a drawer provided at its rear with a recess ll open at its forward side but providing .i rear abutment 12. The drawer is constructed for sliding movement within a desk or other structure provided at the forward end with a beam 13 or other frame member.
The flexible drawer stop 14, as shown best in FIGS. I and 2 may be formed of a flexible strap body preferably provided with a recessed hinge area 15 and also provided with screw openings I6 and 17 for the attachment of the strap to the rear wall 18 of the drawer [0. As shown best in FIG. 4. screws I9 and 20 are passed through openings 16 and I7 to anchor the lower portion of the strap lying below the hinge 15 to the rear wall of the drawer. Above the wall 18 extends a stop portion 2t adapted to engage the desk outlet beam 13 to stop the drawer. as shown in FIG. 6. Preferably formed integrally with the member 14 is a forwardly extending flange 22 which may be engaged for flexing the member 14 downwardly to the release position shown in FIG. 7.
To reinforce the stop potion 2] and sustain it against breakage by reason of repeated contact with the crossbeam 13, I provide a rearwardly extending brace member 23 which fits snugly within the recess 11 of the rear wall 18 so that the rear edge of the brace 23 engages the rear wall or abutment 12 when the parts are in the contacting position shown in FIG. 6. The brace member 23 may be reinforced with the triangular member 24 so that the blow received by the vertical portion 21 is transmitted directly to the brace portion 23 in contact with the sidewalls and rear wall about the recess 1 I.
The foregoing structure enables one to use a plastic body or other flexible material having sufficient rigidity to serve as a stop for the drawer, while at the same time breakage of the stop is avoided by the rabbeting of the rear wall to provide the abutment 12 engaged by the brace 23. The structure is sufficiently flexible to permit manipulation as shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 while at the same time accepting and sustaining severe stress without breakage in the contact position shown in FIG. 6.
While in the foregoing specification l have shown a specific structure in considerable detail for the purpose of illustrating an embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that such details may be varied widely by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
I. In combination with a drawer adapted to slide within a drawer opening and having a rear wall provided with a recess open at the front thereof to provide a rear wall abutment, a flexible stop member having a lower portion anchored to said drawer rear wall below the top thereof and having a stop portion extending above said rear wall and a lower rearwardly ex tending brace fitting freely within said recess for movement into and away from said recess and engaging the abutment at the rear of said recess, said stop member being provided also with a forwardly extending flange below said stop portion.
2. The structure of claim 1 in which said brace is integral with said stop member.
3. The structure of claim 1 in which said stop member is formed of plastic and is provided with an inclined web connecting said brace and said upwardly extending stop portion and urging said brace toward said recess.
4. The structure of claim I in which said flexible stop member is provided with a transverse narrowed section below said forwardly extending flange to provide a hinge.
