subject of the Queen of Great Britain, resid-- ing at Winnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Cleaning Chimneys; and I dohereby' declare that the'following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v

My invention relates to apparatus for cleaning chimneys, the object of the invention being to provide devices for this purpose which shall be simple in their construction, strong and durable, and which may be readily and easily operated from the bottom of the flue.

With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described;

and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a portion of the flue. At the upper end of the flue is provided a cross-bar, B, preferably of iron, which is provided at its ends withdownwardly-extending arms a, formed with shoulders b, said arms being placed within the flue, the shoulders holding said beam in place.

0 represents a block or pulley, which is suitably swiveled to the under side of the beam B, at a point preferably about midway its ends.

D represents a thimble, which preferably consists of a hollow cylinder having closed ends, as shown at c. Openings are made in the said ends 0 of the cylinder; and passing through the cylinder and connecting the. openings in the ends 0 are pipes or tubes d, which are preferably provided with flaring ends. Passing through the cylinder is an arm, f, which is bent at its inner end at right angles to its body.

E represents a wire, or wire cable or chain, which passes over the sheave in the block or pulley and through one pipe or tube, d, and back through the other pipe or tube.

F represents a brush, which preferably consists of a bunch or bunches of wires, or wooden splints, the free ends of the wire or cable E. being secured to said brush.

The operation of my invention is as follows: The beam B, pulley O, and wire cable are permanently attached, as shown and described. When it is desired to clean a chimney, the stovepipe is removed from its hole and oneend of the cord drawn down and attached to the brush.

7 The other end of the wire or cable is then passed through the tubes in the thimble and attached to the brush, after which the thimble is inserted in the stove-pipe hole and the arm f turned, 6

causing its bent inner end to bear against the inner side of the flue and prevent the acci- After the parts have been adjusted as described the brush ismoved up and down the chimney by means of the wire or cable, thus scraping the sides of the flue and removing the soot. After the soot has been removed the thimble is detached from the hole and the brush removed and the cable allowed to remain in position.

The apparatus may also be used for cleaning chimneys other than those having stove-pipe holes, and without the thimble and tubes, and in this case only the cross-bar with pulley, the wire cable, and the brush would be employed.
