Description

P. s. BOOTHBY. BOOT LAGING.
No, 36,388. I PatentedISept. 2, .1862.
THE mums PETEFS :0. PHOTO-LITHOAAMZHINGTON, c. c
'NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
PUTNAM S. BOOTHBY, OF BIDDEFORD, MAINE, ASSIGNOR TO JOS. W. BROOKS AND WARREN SOULE, OF bAME PLACE.
IMPROVED FASTENlNG FO R GA|TER=BOO TS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0- 36,33, dated September 2, 1862.
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, PUTNAM S. BOOTHBY, of Biddeford, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boot-Lacings; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the boot with two narrow strips of cloth or some other material with a corded or raised edge sewed on the inner side of the boot in the position that the eyelets occupy for the.
common boot-lacings; also, clasps connected with link which are so attached to cords that they can slide back and forthwith ease on the raised edge and hold the boot in place when on the foot, and the wearer can lace up or unlace them with ease by pulling the cords.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to'de upper or front sides of clasps B B, the loop and ring in combination being marked G. The clasps B are then passed'ontothe raised edges F F, and the lower end of cord A is fastened to the inner side of the 'boot by stitching at the point marked E, in which theletters E and A both represent the same cord. When the clasps are all pushed to the lower end of the opening toward the toe of the boot, it is unlaced, and by taking hold of the cordatthe point marked A and drawing upward the boot is laced up with ease and dispatch.
In order to unlace the boot with the same ease, I-take the cord marked D and commence at the points marked B B-and pass the ends of the cords (one on'each side) down inside of all the clasps,so that it lies next to the raised edges F'E on both sides, bringing the two ends together at the point D and letting the bight of the cord come around the two upper clasps and link at the point marked 0, and by taking hold of this cord at the point marked D and pulling toward the toe of the boot the clasps slide down on the raised edges F F, and the boot is efiectually unlaoed with perfect ease.
Figure 3 represents an edge view of the clasps B and link G,'and also shows the position of the ring and loop marked G. 'Fig. 1 is a front view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
What I claim, and for which I desire Letters Patent, is The clasp B, with its connecting-link Oor its equivalent, to be used in connection with the cords D and E, loop G, and corded or raised edge F F, constructed andarrangedin the manner and for the purpose as specified.
PUIN-AM S. BOOTHBY.
