UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. KNAUS, OF FAYE'ITE, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF TVO-THIRDS TO VALTER O. KNAUS AND LEVIS L, LYNN, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
DRAWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,647, dated May' 24, 1887.
Application filed March 19, 1887. Serial No. 231,600. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-f Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. KNAU'S, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fayette, in the county of Howard and State of M issouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Drawers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof, in whieh- Figure l is a plan view of the attachment, the drawer and the casing in which it moves being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a perspective view from the rear of the case, the drawer being partly withdrawn and the top of the case being removed. Fig. 3 is a diagram showing a modification.
The object of my invention is to provide an equalizing attachment for drawers, whereby the binding of the drawer in moving it in and out of :its easing will be prevented and the friction incident thereto obviated.
The invention will be first described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A represents the casing, which may be in the form of a bureau or other article, having an opening, into and out of which the drawer B may slide. The back of the easing is apertured to receive the two horizontal pulleys O C, mounted in U-shaped brackets D D, provided with apertured ears d d, which are secured to the rear side of the easing A at opposite sides of the apertures by means of screws d d. The front of the easing is provided with horizontal pulleys E E in the plane of the pulleys C C. The pulleys E E are journaled in brackets E E, secured to the under side of the cross-piece A at the top of the draweropening by means of screws passing through the apcrtured ears c e, projecting from the ends of` the said brackets. Around these four pulleys passes an endless iiexible'strand, F, which is crossed at f, thus forming the parallel ends f f and the crossed diagonal portions f 2 f 2. To each of the ends f f is secured an angular attaching-arm, G, the horizontal branch g of which has at its opposite sides one or more projections, g', which are bent over the strand to secure the arm thereon. The vertical branches g2 of the arms G project downward I and into the open spaces H behind the cleats o H, secured, preferably, to the inner face of the back of the drawer B at or near its upper edge. rIlhe arms G may be readily detached from the cleats by simply moving their vertical branches `(/lsidewise, when the drawer may be removed 5 5 from its easing.
By this construction it will be seen that the force applied in opening and closing the drawer will be equalized--that is, applied equally to both sides-so that the drawer will move only in a straight line, and sidewise or jerky movement and consequent binding be prevented. The lower ends of the branches g2 are bent outward slightly, in order that they may be readily grasped when it is desired to disconneet the arms G from the drawer. In Fig. 3 the same arrangement of the pulleys and connecting-arms is employed; but the endless strand G is doubled and passed around a rear pulley, thence to and around the forward pnl- 7o leys, and back to and around the other rear pulley.
The strand may be formed of cord, wire, or chain, as desired, and any suitable form of pulley may be used. manently connected at its sides to the rear upper corners of the drawer, if found desirable; but I prefer a readily-detachable connection.
Having thus described my invention, what I 8O claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. llhe combination, with the casing and the drawer, and pulleys at the front and rear of the casing at opposite sides of the draweropening, of the endless strand passing around the said pulleys and connected to the rear end of the drawer at or near its opposite ends, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the easing and its 9o drawer, ofthe pulleys at the front and rear of the casing, and the endless crossed strand passing around said pulleys and connected at its sides to the drawer, substantially as set forth.
3. lIhe combination, with the casing and its v drawer, of the pulleys at the front and rear of the easing at opposite sides of the draweropening, andthe endless strand passin around The strand may be per- 7 5,`
said pul1eys,as described, and removably connected at its sides to the drawer, substantially as set forth.
4. The eombinatomwith the casing and its 5 drawer having cleats, ot the pulleys at the front and rear of the casing at opposite sides 0f Vits drawer-opening, and the endless strand passing around the pulleys and having the depending arms entering the spaces in rear of I0 the cleats, substantially as set forth.
5. In a drawer-equalizing attachment, the angular connecting-arm formed with clamping projections on its horizontal arms, whereby it may be readily secured to a strand, substantially as set forth.
JOSEPH H, KNAUS.
