Field of the Invention This invention relates to metal wall building constructions wherein metal panels form the curtain walls and bird guards and coping members are used at the upper ends of the wall sections.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A metal wall and coping construction incorporating a bird guard and a clip for holding the bird guard and coping in assembled relation to the metal wall during the assembly of the respective parts of the construction.
The clips used are so formed as to frictionally engage and thereby be self-retaining with respect to the metal wall and configurations in the clips engage and support the bird guard as well as the coping.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a section of a metal building wall showing a bird guard positioned thereon by means of attachment clips.
FIG. 2 is a plan view of one of the attachment clips seen in FIG. 1 of the drawings.
FIG. 3 is a side view thereof.
FIG. 4 is a back view thereof with portions of the bird guard shown in position therein.
FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional elevation through a portion of the metal wall showing the clip in position thereon and supporting the bird guard relative thereto.
FIG. 6 is a perspective view of the metal wall showing the coping in position thereon finishing the upper ends of the wall sections and enclosing the same and the bird guard secured thereto by the metal clips.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS By referring tothe drawings and FIG. 1 in particular, it will be seen that a plurality of metal wall sections 10 have been disclosed. the longitudinal vertical edges 11 of which are flanged for registry with one another as will be understood by those skilled in the art. The metal wall sections 10 are used on building constructions as curtain wall constructions and are generally corrugated as illustrated in the drawings herein. At the upper end of such metal wall constructions it is common to secure them to a framing member in the building and provide a coping and a bird guard member to prevent birds from entering the area of the corrugations beneath the coping.
In the FIG. 1 of the drawings a bird guard is shown in position as comprising an elongated member 12 havinga plurality of longitudinally spaced corrugation conforming right angular flange portions 13 thereon. Each of the right angular flange portions 13 is slotted as at 14 so as register over the flanges which form the longitudinal vertical edges ill of the metal wall sections 110.
In FIG. I of the drawings the bird guard 12 is shown positioned near the upper end of the metal wall formed of the metal wall sections 10 by a pair of clips 14 which are hung over the upper ends of the respective metal wall sections and depend therefrom and are adapted to receive and retain the elongated member 12 of the bird guard.
By referring now to FIGS. 2 and 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that the clips M are preferably formed of sheet metal members doubled back upon themselves to form front and back sections, the back sections being indicated by the numerals 14A. The front sections have oppositely disposed vertically spaced diagonal slits 15 therein from their opposite side edges with the sections defined by the slits l5 fomring pointed tabs 16 spaced with respect to the front portion 14 of the clip. The tabs 16 are thus capable of slidably receiving and retaining the elongated member 12 which comprises the bird guard and as may best be seen in FIGS. ll, 4 and 5 of the drawings.
It will be seen by referring to FIGS. 4 and 5 of the drawings that the slits l5 and the tabs 16 formed in the clips thereby are spaced vertically, a distance greater than the width of the elongated member 12 which forms the bird guard so that the same may he slipped upwardly beneath the upper pair of tabs 16 and then moved adjacent the front wall 14 of the clip and moved downwardly between the same and the lower pair of tabs 16 whereby the elongated member I2 defining the bird guard will be supported on the clip 14.
In FIG. 5 of the drawings, the clip is shown in side elevation positioned in hooked engagement with the upper end of the metal wall section and with the elongated member 12 of the bird guard positioned between the tabs 16 and with the right angular flange portions 13 of the bird guard in position in the corrugation formed in the metal wall sections 10.
It will thus be seen that by assembling several of the clips to an elongate section of the bird guard 12 the same may then be hung on the metal wall sections as seen in FIG. 1 of the drawings.
By again referring to FIGS. 1 to 5 of the drawings, it will be seen that the lower ends of the clips M are out-turned to form angular flanges 17 and that these out-tumed angular flanges 17 are so formed and positioned as to engage an inturned flange 18 as seen in FIG. 6 of the drawings as forming the lower front edge of a coping member 19 which is of generally inverted U-shaped configuration. The coping member 19 is positioned over the framing of the metal building construction to which the metal wall sections 10 are assembled and forms a closure with respect to a roof material 20, the metal frame 21 and the upper ends of the metal wall sections 10 as illustrated in FIG. 6 of the drawings. The coping member 19 also covers and hides the clips I4 and is in turn engaged on these clips 14.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention the backwall 14A of the clip 14 is preferably provided with a pair of pointed stamped members 23 which engage against and frictionally attach to the back of the metal wall section H) as best seen in FIG. 5 of the drawings. These pointed members 23 lock the assembly to the metal wall sections 10.
Although but one embodiment of the present invention has been illustrated and described, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention, and having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
I. In combination a metal wall formed of vertically standing corrugated panels, a bird guard comprising an elongate section of material having a plurality of right angular flange portions thereon registering with said corrugated panels, a coping member of inverted U-shape having an intumed flange along one longitudinal edge thereof and a clip for securing the bird guard and coping member to said metal wall, said clip comprising a section of material doubled upon itself and having configurations in one portion thereof for engaging and holding the bird guard and secondary configurations for engaging the inturned flange on the coping, said clip adapted to be hung on the metal wall so as to position the bird guard and coping relative thereto.
