Abstract
A bag support consists of a pair of lower U-shaped elements and a pair of upper U-shaped elements, the lower elements defining by the arms of the U''s a rectangular configuration, the arms of the U''s of the upper elements telescoping with respect to the arms of the U''s of the lower elements and the bases of the U''s of the lower elements cross-connecting from one lower element to another. In the preferred embodiment the bases of the U''s of the lower elements cross one another and are fastened together. In one embodiment a dispenser for bags is mounted on the vertical structure.

In the preferred embodiment the bases of the Us of the lower elements cross one another and are fastened together. In one embodiment a dispenser for bags is mounted on the vertical structure.

BAG SUPPORT DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a bag support of the character which is adapted to support plastic or other bags with open mouths by a foldover or cuff at the top of the bags.
There is a widespread trend toward using plastic or similar bags as containers for waste, trash and garbage, instead of using trash cans or garbage cans. The bags may suitably be used as waste baskets or trash containers, and when full can be closed by tying at the neck, and put out for collection by a trash collector. Such bags are also suitable to collect leaves, grass cuttings and the like from a lawn or garden.
End supports for such bags are in many cases bulky, complicated and expensive. If shipped in knockdown form, many of these require the assembly of several screws or bolts and brackets. Various prior art patents show the suspension of an open mount bag by supporting a tumdown portion or cuff at the top by horizontal rails. Chidsey U.S. Pat. NO. 2,470,977; Denise et al. U.S. Pat. No. 750,174; Jones U.S. Pat. No. 2,188,047; Doebele U.S. Pat. No. 3,140,070; Chapman U.S. Pat. No. 2,942,823 and Nicholas U.S. Pat. No. 1,694,079. The present invention provides an improved bag support which can be assembled by telescoping U-shaped members and attaching a single bolt. The structure lends itself well to be shipped knock down in a box or the like and assembled by a person without special skill in such operations. Notwithstanding the ease of assembly, the cross connection of the upper and lower Us and desirably the crossing of the bases of the lower Us assures a very sturdy structure which can serve for a relatively long period of time without replacement or repair.
In the drawings I have chosen to illustrate a few only of the numerous embodiments in which the invention may appear, selecting the forms shown from the standpoint of convenience in illustration, satisfactory operation and clear demonstration of the principles involved.
FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective of the bag support of the invention and a bag to be held therein.
FIG. 2 is an end elevation of the bag support of the invention with a bag supported thereby.
FIG. 3 is a top plan view of the bag support of the invention, omitting the bag.
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 2 showing a modification provided with a lid shown in section, a roll of replacement bags and casters to permit moving the device from place to lace. p FIG. 5 is a section of a strip of plastic bags shown on the roll in FIG. 4.
FIG. 6 is a plan view of a strip of plastic bags, showing the bottom of one bag and the perforation for separation of bags.
As shown in the drawings the bag support of the invention comprises lower Us and 21, each having a base 22 and arms 23. This is assembled with upper Us 24 and 25 having bases 26 and 27.
In accomplishing the assembly, the bases of the lower US are crossed and a bolt 28 is fastened through openings 29 at the center of the lower Us, the nut desirably being constructed so as not to damage the plastic.
Thus, as assembled, the lower Us provide upstanding arms at the comers of a rectangle within which the bag can be supported.
The upper US are inverted and their arms are telescoped with respect to upstanding arms of difierent lower Us so that the basses of the upper Us provide horizontal rails in spaced relation, and these rails by their cross connection between the lower Us brace the entire structure laterally and diagonally.
In order to accomplish the telescoping, one of the upper Us and lower Us, and preferably both, are made of tubing and the sizes of the tubing are adjusted so that one tube can extend within another at the arms of the Us.
A bag 30 is placed within the stand and a cuff or foldover 31 is made at the top and the rails 26 formed by the upper Us 24 and 25 are placed within the cuff by springing them inward slightly and stretching the plastic or other material of the bag slightly so as to firmly grip and support the bag and hold the bag open.
A lid 32 can cover the bag if desired.
Where desired, as shown in FIG. 4, a crosspiece 33 can be mounted by screws 34 in holes 35 extending between upper U arms 27 and a roll 36 sealed at 40, of continuous plastic bags 37, perforated at 38 for separation, can be put on this crosspiece so as to provide a dispenser for bags. The householder therefore merely needs to pay out the required amount of plastic bag material and tear off the bag at the next perforation.
As shown in FIG. 4 the device may be provided with casters 41 so as to render it portable to support a leaf bag or to collect trash.
The frame may be made of any suitable material, such as steel tubing with a steel bolt, preferably galvanized or plated for corrosion protection or protected by paint or the like. Aluminum tubing and an aluminum bolt can be used if desired.
The device may be made in various sizes to support different sizes of bags as required.
In operation, the device will preferably be shipped in knock down form and assembled by the user to complete the frame. A bag is then mounted on the frame by folding down a flap or cuff at the top and pulling in the sides so that the cuff contains the top rails within it.
The bag is then used for collecting trash or otherwise and after filling, is removed by lifting it out of the support, pulling up the flap and closing it by tying, either on itself or with a wire tie or string.
Thus it will be evident that the base provides four upstanding elements or tubes which are positioned at the corners of a rectangle, and one inverted U-shaped element at each side telescopes with respect to two of such elements, the spaced inverted U-shaped elements supporting the top of the bag.
In view of my invention and disclosure, variations and modifications to meet individual whim or particular need will doubtless become evident to others skilled in the art, to obtain all or part of the benefits of my invention without copying the structure shown, and I therefore claim all such insofar as they fall within the reasonable spirit and scope of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a bag support, a pair of lower U-shaped elements having the bases of their Us adapted to rest on the ground, with the arms of their US upstanding at the corners of a rectangle, a pair of upper inverted U-shaped elements having one arm of each upper U telescoping with respect to an arm of one lower U and another arm of each upper U telescoping with respect to an arm of the other lower U and the bases of the upper Us cross-connecting from one lower U to another, the bases of the lower Us and the bases of the upper Us being in parallel planes and the bases of the lower Us crossing one another, and a fastening at the point of crossing securing the bases of the lower U s together.
Claims (1)
1. In a bag support, a pair of lower U-shaped elements having the bases of their U''s adapted to rest on the ground, with the arms of their U''s upstanding at the corners of a rectangle, a pair of upper inverted U-shaped elements having one arm of each upper U telescoping with respect to an arm of one lower U and another arm of each upper U telescoping with respect to an arm of the other lower U and the bases of the upper U''s cross-connecting from one lower U to another, the bases of the lower U''s and the bases of the upper U''s being in parallel planes and the bases of the lower U''s crossing one another, and a fastening at the point of crossing securing the bases of the lower U''s together.
