COMBINED FENCE AND WATER GATE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,350, dated May 17, 1887.

Application filed September 28, 1886. Serial No. 214,745.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THOMAS D. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holly Grove, in the county of Monroe and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Fence and Water-Gate; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to gates for fences for low and marshy ground, and has for its object to provide a simple, durable water-gate which will exclude stock and which cannot be overturned by the wind or washed away by freshets; and it consists of the parts and combinations of parts, hereinafter described, and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, the figure is a side elevation of my Watergate, one of the posts being partly broken away to show the end of the top bars of the gate.

My gate is adapted for low and marshy ground, and in crossing creeks, branches, and land subject to overflow.

A represents the posts of the main section of the gate, and B the gateway. These posts in practice should be at least twice the length of the adjacent posts, and they are driven into the banks of the stream tobe crossed at lowwater mark a sufficent depth to attain solidity. A round opening, b, is bored into the posts A, about five feet above the water,and the ends of the upper bar, 0, of the gate inserted therein, As is clearly shown in the right-hand post, A, the ends of this bar Care rounded and agroove, 0, cut therein at a short distance from the end.

These gates are formed of bars G, arranged like a right-angled triangle, and are provided with slats O and abut against a stop, D, in the upper bar, E, of the auxiliary gates 13.

While for the sake of convenience the abovedescribed construction is designated a gate, yet it is not a gate in the sense of a passageway to an inclosure.
