CHECK-ROW CORN-PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,306, dated May 17, `1887.
Application filed March 3. 1884. Serial No. 122,855. (No mold.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it khown that I, Isaac N. TUsING, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Glen Grouse, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Row Corn- Planters; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
My invention relates to check-row devices for corn-planters; andit consists in the improvements hereinafter described and set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a device embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a detail plan of a portion of Fig. 1, one of the parts being removed; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line w w, Fig. l.
A is a beam designed to be mounted transversely on the planter, and having a bracket, a, bolted on its under side, to which bracket is pivotally secured a lever, b, terminating at its lower end in ears c, forming a groove in which is located the vertical portion d of an angle-arm, e, bolted to the lever b. The upper end oi' said lever b is bifurcated to receive one end of each of a pair of connecting-bars, f g.
A pair of yokesupports, BO, are located on each side of the center of the beam A. The yoke-support B consists of yoke-arms h, embracing the beam A, and secured thereon by a pivot, t'. It carries at its upper side vertical arms j, parallel with each other, to form a groove, 7c, and enlarged at their central portion to permit the formation of an opening, l. The lever f is also connected to the support B at the side of the same, above the pivot t', by a pivot, m. The other yoke-support, C, is constructed similar to the support B, with the eX- ception that one of its arms h depends for a considerable distance lower than the bar A, and has connected thereto the other end of the bar g, the connection in this instance being below the pivot z.
At each end of the bar A is a triangular frame, D D, consisting of a cross-bar, E, een trally pivoted on the crossbar A by a bolt, a,
to which are secured side bars, E, which converge toward each other at their front ends and are connected together by bars o p. rlhe rear portions of the bar o and bars E are recessed to receive rollers q, turning on vertical spindles r, bearing in the said bars. The re cess in which the roller is located is beveled away at its rear portion, s, so as to obviate any abrupt angles for the check-rowcord or cable.
Ablock, F', is secured transversely across the front ends of the bars E, and is recessed to receive two rollers, t, turning on vertical spindles u bearing in said block F and in said bars E, the said rollers being arranged in such proximity one to the other that sufcient space is left between the same to permit the check-row cord and its projections to pass bc tween them; rlhe bar has a curved slot, n, which is countersunk upon its upper side, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the curvature of said slot being upon aradins having the bolt n for a center, and in said curved slot'is a bolt, w, the head x of which rests in the countersunk portion of the slot, while the said bolt is secured to the bar A.
rIhe checkrow cord or cable enters at one corner of the frame and passes over one of the rollers q, between the rollers t, through the yoke-supports B and C, thence between the rollers t of the frame D', and out of the said frame over one of the rollers r.
The frame D will be vibrated on its pivot n in the direction from which the cable comes, thus affording a gradual entrance for said cable into the frame, and reducing the liability of the cord becoming Worn or cut by reason of sharp corners or angles. The other frame D' will be vibrated upon its pivot n in thel direction in which the cable extends after passing from the device.
rlhe dimensions ofthe groove 7c are such that the cable can readily pass through the same, the location of the rollers t being such that the said cable `will enter said groove just at the top of the same, so that when one of the projections on the cable comes in contact with the arms jl they will be thrown toward the center, and the projection readily pass through, and atan interval thereafter another one of the projections comes in contact with the IMO arms j of the other yoke-frame, moving thev same uponits pivot and restoring the parts to their rst position, the movements resulting in oscillating the lever b and its arm e on its pivot, and thus reciprocating the feed-slide. It will thus be obvious that a device constructed in accordance with my invention is of simple construction, and durable and effective in operation. Furthermore, the device permits the entrance of the check-row cable into the same, and automatically adjusts itself to reduce the extreme angle which said cable would otherwise experience.
rl`he arrangement of yoke-supports with respect to the feed-mechanism is such that the actuation of said mechanism is effected with regularity and precision.
I am aware that heretofore it has been proposed to provide check-row attachments with pivoted guide-frames adapted to automatically adjust themselves under the varying tension or draft ofthe check-row cord,and that bifureated arms were pivoted between such frames for actuation by the tappets on the cord, and thus operate the seed-slide. I therefore make no broad claim to any such features.
