WELL DIGGING APPARATUS.
No. 363,151. Patented May 17, 1887.
' nrrnn STATES WELL=DIGGING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,151, dated May Application filed February 4, 1887. Serial No. 226,556. (No model.)
10 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM LOWMAN, of Marionville, in the county of Forest and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in \VelLDigging Apparatus, of which the following is aspeeification.
My invention relates to apparatus for drilling wells for water, oil, or gas; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of a mast with braces, treadle, lever, link, rope, and pulley for operating the drillingtools by man-power, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The figure is a perspective view of my apparatus as set up and in use.
A is a post firmly planted in the ground, to the upper end of which is hinged or jointed a horizontal treadle-lever, 13, having a footboard, 0. To this lever is jointed, by a fulcrum-pin and a series of holes, the lower ends of a pair oflink-bars, D D, the upper ends of which are hinged or pivoted to a lever, E, having a series of holes, allowing it to be moved backward along B, and into any one of which a clevis, 0, may be fastened, which clevis is connected to the rope I), which passes around pulley 0 above and connects with the drilling'tool a.
F is the mast, which is madein two sections, hinged at 71, and held supported in upright position by tension; rope T, braces H H, G G, and G G, which latter have aslotted connection with G G to adjust their inclination. At the upper end of the mast is ar ranged the pulley c, and to the side of this mast is applied two offseting-boards, F 1*", separated by spacingblocks at their ends and fastened by bolts 15 to the mast. Between the boards 13" F the end of the lever E is pivoted, a series of holes being madein the boards to permit the lever E to be pivoted higher or lower.
drillingtool lifted from the well. Just to the left of the treadle-board 0 there is arranged a box or plat-form, stands with his left foot when working drill.
The operation is as follows: The operator places one foot upon the box or platform and the other upon the treadle, while his hands grasp the drilling tool or rope. He then presses down the treadle and lifts'on the drilling-tool, which action raises the tool, and then by suddenly transferring his weight to the box the tool is allowed to descend of its own I, upon which the operator the gravity, and delivers a blow at the bottom of a the well. As the operator handles the tool or the attached rope, he turns the latter about its longitudinal axis from time to time to change the cut of the drill below.
The drilling apparatus, as thus described, may be quickly set up or taken down at any point, and is easily folded and carried by a single wagon, and bythe aid of itsleverage an ordinary man can operate a drill insinking wells with great advantage and facility.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. The combination of the mast F, carrying a pulley at its upper end, and offsetting-boards F F, with holes, the lever ll, pivoted between the same and having draft'connection cand drill-rope b, the linksD, the lever B, pivoted to the links and having a stationary fulcrum on one side of the same and a treadleboard on the other, and braces for sustaining the mast, substantial l y as shown and described. 2. The combination of the hinged mast F, with pulley 0 and boards F F, the lever E, with draft-conneetion c and rope I), the links D, lever B. with treadle-board, the post A, standard F, Windlass F, rope 'l, and braces G G, H H, and G G, substantially as and for the purpose described.
