Description

(No Model.)
T. A. LONG.
VBHIGLB' HEATER AND LAMP. No. 363,149. Patented May 1'7, 1887.
3 f E d AA UNITED STATES PATENT rricn.
T. ,AVERY LONG, OF IIOVARD, PENNSYLVANIA.
VEHICLE HEATER AND L AlVlP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,149, dated May '17, 1887.
Application filed February 8, 1887. Serial No, 926,934. (No model.)
in the county of Centre, State of Pennsylva-V nia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle Heaters and Lamps, ot' which the following is a specitication, ret'- erence beinghad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in vehicle heating and lighting lamps; and it has for its objects to provide a lamp for the above-named purpose that will be cheap and simple, as well as durable. 'Ihese objects I attain by the means illustrated by the ac companying drawings.
Figure l represents a vertical section of my invention attached to the yfloor of a vehicle; Fig. 2, aperspeetive View ot' the lamp-holding receptacle; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the lamp without the globe and burner; Fig. 4, a view of the flame-shield.
In the drawings, the letter A indicates the bottom 01 iloor of avel1icle,through which has been cut an opening, n., suitable to receive the lamp-holding receptacle B, which is provided with an annular tlt1iige,b, by which the receptacle is hung, andan opening, I, in front, as plainly indicated in the drawings. rlhc top of the receptacle is provided with a hinged cover, d, provided with apertures g, for the purposes hereinafter described.
The lamp is constructed with an oil-cup, C, and provided with an `ordinary burner and globe of the tubular construction, the said globe being heldin position bythe wire frame D, consisting ofa ring, E, that tits over the top ofthe globe, and has pivotally connected to it the vertical wires F F G G, the wires F F being also pivoted to the oil-cup by the loop A, and the wires G G are detaehably connected to the cups by the hook I. Adame-shield, K,
is attached to the Vtop of the globle by the spring-wires m attached to it.
The usefulness and objects of my inventio can plainly be seen from the description of the operation, as follows: The lamp-1eceptacle is vent its falling off.
suspended in the opening of the vehicle, the lamp lighted, the different parts adjusted thereto and placed in position in said receptacle. The heat from the lamp passes upward through the apertures in the cover, warming the occupants of the vehicle, of course sup` posingthem to be using lap-robes, under which the heat is retained. At night the light from the lamp shines through the opening in the front of the receptacle, lighting the road in front of the vehicle, and, if desirable, the opening in front may be provided with an ordinary darksIide.
The wire frame is for the purpose of holding the globe of thelamp steady and to pre- The lamp itself fitting snugly within the receptacle, prevents it from tipping or otherwise moving, and to remove the globe the frame is simply unhooked at one side and thrown upward and backward.
The wire chimney-holder, being loosely connected to the lamp, has a play independent thereof, which permits it to withstand the shocks due to rough travel and 'from inolining when the vehicle tips, so that the chimney will notbecome smutted or broken by sudden heat# ing, which would be the case otherwise.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. The combination, with the suspended receptacle having a hinged perforated top, of the lamp having a loosely connected wire chimney-holder, whereby the chimney is permitted to have an independent motion to pro vide against shocks, substantially as specified.
` 2. The combination, with the suspended receptacle, of the lamp, its loosely-connected chi1nney-l1older, and the flame-shield detach` ably secured to the top of said holder, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
T. AVERY LONG. Witnesses:
