lINiTED STATES PATENT OE rc OOOK O. LAWRENCE, OF MONROE, WISCONSIN.
CARRIAGE TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,147, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed December 27, 1886. Serial No. 222,560. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, COOK O. LAWRENCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monroe, in the county of Green and State of VVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Tops; and I do hereby declare the following be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in folding carriage -tops. In Letters Patent No. 316,983, issued to me on May 5, 1885, for improvements in folding carriagetops, there is shown and described a buggy-top provided with aforward folding extension supported by jointed front props having downwardly-elosing knuckle joints; and my present improvement consists in providing the said front props with a slotted and pivoted connection at their upper ends, by means of which they are attached to the forward extension, thereby avoiding the use of a knuckle-joint; also, in making a cheaper joint and one that will be concealed by the cover.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents in side elevation a buggytop in raised position, showing myimproved top-extension-supporting prop applied thereto; Fig. 2, a similar view with the front top-extension and its supporting-props folded. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the i'ront-extension-snpporting prop.
Like letters denote like parts in the several figures.
A B O represent the f ramebows, I) the side props, and E the iop-brace, all of which may he of suitable construction, and connected together substantially as in my former patent above designated.
F represents the front extension, made in. the usual bow form.
This extension is supported by side props, G, which are made of any desired length, and are pivoted at their lower ends to the front bows A. I prefer to make said props short, as offering less obstruction in entering and leaving the vehicle.
The props G are formed at their upper ends with an enlarged head, G, provided with a slot, 9, struck in the are of acirele. Through the upper portion of the head G is passed a pin or bolt, 9, which secures the prop to the front GX-lZQDSIOlT-bOW F, 'and serves as a pivot upon which the connected or pivoted parts are free to turn. Upon each edge, at each side of the top front bow, F, I affix a staple, II, one leg of which is driven through the slot g of the head G, the two legs of the staple thus straddling the lower edge of the head G and serving as a stop to support the front bow F in a horizontal position. The slotg is of sufficient length to permit of the folding of the front extension in which the length of the said slot is traversed by the staple or stop H.
In order to fold the front extension, the topbraces E are pressed upward, opening their knucklejoints c, and a downward pull upon the front extension-bow F will cause the slotted props G to move backward, the bow turning .upon its pivotal connection with said props, and the stop H passing downward through the slot 9 to the lower end thereof. As will be seen from Fig. 2, the forward extension will now be folded against the front bow A, and extends downward, affording protection against the weather.
Iclaim- 1. In a folding vehicle-top, the front folding extension connected to the top-supporting braces and the cover, and the front props pivoted to the front bows and to the said top-extension, and having each a curved slot at its pivoted connection with the front extension, in combination with stops fixed to said front extension and adapted to travel in said curved slots, substantially as and :for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the front top-extension, of supporting-props therefor, having enlarged upper ends pivoted to the said topextension, and provided with slots struck from the said pivot, and staples fixed to said extension and traveling within said slots, substantially as set forth.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' COOK O. LAlVRENOE.
Witnesses: HENRY LUnLow, O. W. TWINING.
