Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Mal'. 20, 1917.
Application filed December 3, 1915. Serial No. 64,901.
To all `whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l.y Max BUcH, a subject of the liniperor of (.ermanv,V residing at Jackson. llfliehigan,V have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoods or Covers for Vehicles, Ot' which the following is a. specification. Y
My present invention relates to improvements in tops, hoods or covers designed for use on vehicles of any kind, motor boats and so forth and has for its Object to provide an extremely simple and efficient arrangement of the bows and links or levers whereby a. uniform movement of the front and intermediate hows will he secured. the top be capable of being extended Or collapsed by a single Operator and this without disturbing the occupants of the vehicle.
With these and other Objects in viciv the invention includes the novel featnres of construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly defined hy the appended claim.
An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure l is a view of the cover or top in its extended Or unfolded position.
Fig. 2 is a view of the same with parts in position assumed approximately midway of the folding or collapsing movement.
Fig. 3 is a vieiv of the top completely folded.
Referring by reference characters to this drawing, 1 designates the main bow, which preferably is provided with angular extensions la, provided with Openings ib, designed tO receive the pintle of the usual brackets by which the top is pivotally supported from the vehicle. A rear bow 2 has its ends pivotally connected tO the extremities Of the extension la as indicated at '2a. The nnnicral 3 designates the intermediate or auxiliary rear bow: the numeral 4 the interme` diate or auxiliary front bow and the numeral 5 the front or ontrigger hoiv, these all being connected to and supported from the main hovv in the manner, which will now be described in detail.
It will be understood that the arrangement of the arms of the hows and the conmeeting links, levers or braces on Opposite sides of the top are identical so that a description Of One side answers for both.
Referring noiv tO one side. it will be seen that the Outrigger bow has the rear end Of each arm pivotally connected hy a link or lever T with the corresponding arm of the main how l by a suitable pivot. indicated at le, said link or lever being extended in rear of its pivot as indicated at la and beingr pivotaliy connected at 9a to one extremity of a link 9, the other extremity of which is pivotally connected at 9" to the corresponding arm of bow 3.
The adjoining ends of the arm of Outringer bow and link or lever 7 are preferably curved upwardly and pivoted together at 5a.
A brace Or link 8 has its (preferably) downwardly curved end pivotally connected to the side of the main bow l at a point Sa shove the pivot l@ and its forward extremity pivotally connected to the side of the ontrigger bow at a point sach as Sb in advance Of the pivot 5a.
The front supplemental or auxiliary bow 4 has its sides or arms pivotally connected to the arms of the Outrigger bow at la. these arms being preferably curved as shoivn at their connectingr ends. and said arias of the front auxiliary hon' al above their pivots sl are connected by links l() with intermediate portions of the links S.
The. forward ends of links l() are preferably curved upward to their point Of pivetal connection as indicated at l0 and the links 8 preferably have curved portions 8 which serve to Offset the pivots l0@ from the links or braces S.
A pin 1l on each lever or link i' serves as a stop to limit the downward movement of brace 8 with relation thereto and hence the downward movement of the Outrigger bOW.
By reason Of the connections thas described the position of the hows when extended is accurately determined While at the saine time through the lever members T and link S and the link 9 acting on levers 'i' the upper part of the bovvs move forward and backward in the folding and unfolding action in an approximately horizontal path, that is Without rising Or falling until the extreme rear of the vehicle is reached. Thus the top may be folded or unfolded Without disturbing the occupants.
Furthermore the top may be easily Opmuted lo extend it or to collapse or fold it hy n single operator either from within or without the vehicle.
I olnirn :is my invention:
A vehicle top comprising' n roer bow, a innin how, a renr Suliplenientnl bow pivotccl thm'eto, n front or outrigger loowT a` member pivote-d to euch side nrln of the ontrigger how und 11min bow, said members having eX- tensions, links connecting the arms of the roar supplemental how with said extensions1 n link pivoted to euch side of the main bow above said members, and to the ontrigger bow in front of the pivots of said members. :1` front supplemental how having iis tromities pivoted to the sides of the outrigger bow, und links Connecting the sides or' the front supplemental how with .Suhl liret named links.
In testnnony whereof I nliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
