DEVICE FOR CLEANING GUN-BARRELS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. Hnenvnor- TOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cleaning Gun-Barrels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for wiping and cleaning the inside of gun-barrels; and it consists, chiefly, in devices for imparting rotary movement to the wiper, whereby it is revolved as it is drawn back and forth within the barrel, and in the combination, arrangement, and construction of the parts. Gun-wipers as they are usually constructed and used consist of a rigid rod provided upon the end which passes within the barrel with a suitable device for holding the wiping material, and as this wiper is passed back and forth within the barrel it is turned as well as possible by the hand; but this forms a very awkward and inconvenient implement for the purpose; and the object of my inventionis to provide a means of more thoroughly and effectually cleaning and securing the inside of a gun-barrel and of oiling the same in a more efficient manner by automatically revolving the wiper as itis drawn back and forth within I attain this object by'the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved wiper device. A piece, (1, consisting of astrip of thin metal twisted, is passed within the opening in the rod a, and is also passed between the pins 0, and the inner end of this piece (I is provided with a stop, 6, which prevents the piece from being withdrawn from between the pins and from the rod.

Secured to the opposite end of the piece (2 is a wiper-piece, f, provided, if desired, with notches i, for holding a rag, tow, or other suit able material for wiping or oiling the gumbar rel, and the outer end of this piece fis pro vided with a screw-threaded opening, j, into which may be secured any desired scouring device.

9 is a collar upon the wiper-holderf, and the portion between the collar and the piece d is provided with a screw-thread, upon which is passed the threaded end of a sleeve, h, which extends over the twisted piece (Z and for a short distance upon the hollow rod a. This sleeve operates to prevent any dirt or grit from gathering upon the twisted piece (I, and prevents also the material used for wiping or oiling from being caught by the twist and clogging or stopping the rotary movement of the wiper.

I do not confine my invention entirely to the particular form and construction of the twisted piece d, which may be made and attached in other forms, as one or more wires coiled spirally, or a spiral groove in an extended portion of the wiper-holder properly arranged,

would cause the wiper to revolve and produce a similar result.

The operation of the device is that the proper material is placed around the wiperholder f and the holder is passed into the barrel, and as the rod (1 is pushed back and forth within the barrel the pins 0 passing along the curves of the piece d causes the holder f and the wiping material thereon to revolve, and the wiping material, fitting snugly within the barrel, then passes evenly over every portion of the inner surface of the barrel and conr pletely cleans, scours, or lubricates the same.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is---- 1. In a gun-cleaning device, the combination,

and the opposite end passed within the hollow rod, and a rigid pin projecting within the hollow rod and engaging with the spiral groove, substantially as herein set forth.

2. In a gun-wiping device,the combination, with a hollow rod, (1, having the cross-pins 0 near its end, of a twisted piece, (1, with one end passed into the rod a and between the pins 0, and with its outer end secured to a wiping-piece, f, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

3.
