UNITED Starts :PATENT PoTATom'DleGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,117, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed April 1l, 1F86,
Serial No. 101.781. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concer-n.:
Be it known that 1, GEORGE M. CLARK, of Higgannm, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement Applicable to Potato-Diggers, of which the following` is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where` Figure l is a View of a potato-digger entire. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing two of the rearwardl y-extending thigers, hereinal'ter nienA tioned, also the blade and cleat to which they are attached, suoli blade and cleat being cut in vertical section. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing aportion of the upper face of the said cleat, and also a portion ot' one of the rearwardly-extending lingers.
This potato-digging device may be attached to a cnltivator-frame, which cnltivatorl` rame is shown in the drawings; but as there is no necessity for any detailed description of it, none will be given.
The letters c a. denote parts of a cultivatorframe, and I will lescrhcianw the potatodigging parts are attached thereto.
rlhe letters b b denote two small plows, which in the use of the tool are to go one upon each side of rows of potatoes which are to be dug, and they are so set as to tnrn the dirt away from the potatoes.
The letter c denotes a horizontal blade extending between the plows b I), and its oi'liceis to run beneath the potatoes and lift them and the surrounding dirt from their restiiigplace.
The plows b and the bladecare all attached to the standards d d the plows to the outsides and the blades to the insides of the standards, which standards are so attached to the parts a a as to give the plows and blade a Vertical adjustment with reference thereto; and to this end the standards are pivot-ally attached to the parts o, a by bolts c, which act as pivots. The front ends o the standards d are provided with a series of holes, d', or an equivalent slot, through which, and also through the parts a, runs a bolt, c', by means of which the plows and the blade can be secured at any desired point in their said vertical adjustment.
From the rear side of the blade c extends two series ol' lingers. The series/'lie in one plane and the series f lie in another plane. The Iingers ol'seriesf alternate with the iingcrsf in the points of theirattaclnncnt to the blade. By locating these fingers in two series in this manner the delivery of dirt and stones is greatly accelerated. All of these fingers are attached tothe blade in the same manner, and that a peculiar manner. The front ent of each linger has an enlargement, f. These fingers arc all clamped to the blade c by the cleat g, drawn toward the blade by appropriate bolts or screws. This cleat is provided on the npper side with lugs 71., which extend from linger to finger in rear of the enlargements f thereby preventing the lingers l'roni being drawn rearwardly out ot' place.
I claim as my improvement-- In combination, in a potato-digger, the frame-bars a, standards d, pivoted to framebars at o, bolt-holes d', bolt t", plows b, attached to ontsidcs of standards, and blade c, attached to insides of standards and provided with rear lingers, f, all substantially as de scribed, and l'or the purpose set forth.
' GEORGE lil.. CLARK.
