DEVICE FOR PAYING REBATES ON RAILWAYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,031, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed August 21, 1886. Serial No. 211,576.

Beit known that l, CHAnLns S. Wnsrnnooic, of Spragueville, in the county of Stt Lawrence and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Paying Rebates on Railways; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for paying rebates on railways.
rlhe primary object is to afford apassenger who pays his fare on the train and receives a rebate in connection therewith to cash his rebate-certificate before leaving the train, and at the saine time preserve in full force the cheelron the improper appropriation of funds by the conductor, which the rebate system at present admits of.
A further object is to provide a simple device which will autoinatically present the amount of rebate to the passenger upon the deposit of the rebatecertificate.
Vith these ends in view my invention consists in :certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Fignie 1 is a view of the device in Vertical section from front to rear. Fig. 2 is a front view with parts removed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged top plan View with cover removed; and Fig. l is a view of one forni of key.
The gist of my invention is a box for the reception of the certificates of rebate, so constructed or locked that no o'ne except the proper officer of the company can gain access thereto, a reservoir for holding a supply of money, a nioney-discharge conduit adapted to receive the money from the money-reservoir, and mechanism in communication willi the entrance-passage of the certificates of rebate and money-reservoir, whereby the insertion of a certificate of rebate will effect a discharge of the amount of money called for by the rebatecertiiicate to a point within reach of the pas senger.
The following` is a very efficient device for accomplishing my purpose:

lower portion of which forms a receptacle for certificates of rebate, and access to which is conveniently gained by a door, a, at the front, provided with a lock, B.
The top or cover C of the box is a flat metallic plate provided with a pair of hangers, c, depending from its under side and castintegral therewith, the said hangers extending nearly or quite parallel with each other from front to rear, and constructed of such vform as to afford bearings for the movable parts of the device.
The cover O is conveniently secured in its position by a'pair of drawbolts, l), which extend through perforations near the opposite edges of the cover, and thence downwardly within the box to a pair of perforated lugs, d, located at the sides of the box just above the certifieate-receptacle, through which they pass and in which they are secured by nuts, access to which is gained through the door of the box.
A wheel, E, provided with a winding-diiim, e, on one side and a ratchet-toothed pinion, c', on the opposite side, is loosely mounted between the hangers c on a pair of cone-bearings, F, adjustably secured in the hangers; or the wheel E might be secured on a sleeve carrying the drum and ratchet-pinion, the sleeve being loosely mounted -on a bolt extending between the hangers; or the wheel, drum, and pinion might be secured on an axle, the latter being` loosely mounted in suitable bearings in the hangers.-
The face of the wheel E is provided willi lugsf, located at suitable intervals along itsv edges and so arranged that a piece of money. G, of the value of the rebate may be received between two successive pairs of lugs. The size of the wheel is immaterial, but is preferably as large as can be conveniently incased within a box of suitable size and leave room for the feed and discharge mechanism.
The wheel E is actuated by a weight, H, the cord 7L from which extends over a roller, l, loosely mounted in the upper rear portions of the hangers, and thence down the rear side of and around the winding-drum c. The weight thus tends to rotate the wheel E over toward the front. The wheel is held against a rotary movement by a pawl, K, pivotally secuied to one of the hangers in front of and a little be- IOO .engaged from thel ratchet-pinion low the ratchet-pinion e. A light spring, 7c, tends to hold one end of the pawl normally in engagement with the ratchet-pinion; but the end of the pawl is so rounded and the teeth on the pinion so shaped that the pawl may be disby a slight pressure on its opposite end.
A reservoir, L, consisting of a fiat vertical tube, the interior of which is just large enough to admit of the free passage of one of the pieces of money G, is located at the top of the box and extends down through the cover, its lower end terminating at the front of the wheel E at a point about in a horizontal plane with the axis of the wheel, and is so cut away to conform to the curve of the wheel that thelowermost piece of money will rest on a pair of the lugs f, which are opposite the extreme lower end of the reservoir or tube.
The intervals between the pairs of lugs f and the teeth on the ratchet-pinion are so arranged that the turning of the wheel the distance between two successive pairs of lugs, f, corresponds to one tooth on the pinion, and hence when the pawl is disengaged from one tooth and catches in the next succeeding tooth the face of the'wheel E has turned sufficiently to set free one of the pieces ofv money. The piece of money so set free drops into the inclined passage-way or chute M, and thence down and outwardly into the receiving-cup m, from which it may be taken by the passenger.
The pawl K is operated as follows: A iiat verticaltube or passage-way, N, leads from the top of the box down a short distance past the front end of the pawl, and is cut away on its rear side, as shown at n, to admit the end of the pawl, which, when in its normal position, projects partially across the opening in the tube or passage-wayNin an oblique direction. The shape of the interior of the tube N is preferably such that a simple iiat piece of metal dropped in it and allowed to slide down therein would slide past the end of 'the pawl without disturbing it; but when a piece of metal which is made for the purpose is inserted it will in the course of its fall engage the end of the pawl and release it from the ratchet-pinion long enough to allow the wheel Eto turn one notch. A convenient form for the opening in the tube N is that shown, where it has one or more grooves cut in its sides, and the end of the pawl projecting across one of these is acted upon by a key or metallic plate whichpts them. The conductor is supposed to be supplied with a `stock of such keys, l?, and when the passenger pays his fare on the train a certificate is made out by the conductor in a manner similar to that now in use, or in any other approved manner, and such certiiieate is inserted in the keyand handedvtothe passenger. The passenger upon leaving the train drops the key,with the certificate attached, into the box through the tube or passage-way N, whenceit falls into the receptacle at the bottom of the box. In its passage, however, it engages the from the ratchet-pinion c', allows the wheel E to turn the distance between two successive pairs of lugs, f, and a piece of money to fall into the discharge-conduit, and thence into the receiving-box, from which the passenger takes it and passes on. The proper ofcer, by opening the lock-box at the end of the route and counting the number of rebate-certicates can readily estimate the amount of money due from the conductor.
It is evident that the formof the box, the construction of itscover, the means for actuating thc wheel E, aud'all the parts described, might be changed in many particulars with` out departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The co n1binatiou,with a lock-box adapted to receive certificates of rebate, of a moneydischarging wheel, a :money-reservoir adapted to feed money, one piece at a time, to said money-discharging Wheel,themoney-discharging Wheel being adapted to be operated 'by a key containing the certilicate of rebate, substantially as set forth.

'Ihe combination, with a lock-box, oi' a money-discharging device, consisting of the wheel and chute, arranged substantially as described, mechanism for locking the moneydischarging device, a conduit leading to said 4. The combination, with a lock-box provided with an opening for the reception of certificates of rebate, and a money-reservoir connected therewith, of a money discharging wheel adapted to remove the money from the reservoir, and an operating-lever adapted to be operated by the weight of a key containing the certificate of rebate, substantially as set forth. p

The combination, with a lock-box provided with an opening for the reception of a key containing a certificate of rebate, of a money-reservoir, a money-discharging wheel adapted to remove the money piece by piece from the reservoir, and an operatingpawl adapted to release the wheel when engaged by said key, substantially as set forth.

rebatereceptaele and a rebate-conduit leading thereto, of an actuated money-discharge wheel, a money-reservoir leading to the said wheel and depositing a single coin at a time thereon, and a spring-actuated pawl, one end of which normally locks the money-discharge wheel while the opposite end is in position to be vibrated by the discharge from the rebateeonduit, substantially as set forth. y
7. The eoiiibination,with an actuated moneydischarge wheel, a inoney-reservoir leading to said wheel, and a rebate-conduit, of a springactuated pawl normally resting with one end in position to lock the inoney-diseharge wheel and the opposite end in position to receive the discharge froin the rebateconduit, and an inclined money-chute leading` out of the farebox, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination, with a money-reservoir, an actuated money-discharge wheel oii which the fornier disehaigesits contents singly, and a spring-actuated pawl, one end of which normally locks the money-discharge wheel, of a rebate-conduit, the lower end of which re ceives one eiid of the spring-actuated pawl, and a key adjusted to the size of said conduit, for the purpose substantially as set forth.
9. The eoiiibinatioii,with a nioneydischarge wheel having lugs on its periphery, arateliettoothed wheel, a winding-drum, and a weight connected with said drum, of the spring-actuated pawl, the rebate-conduit, and rebatekey, substantially as set forth.
10. The combination,witli a weiglitaetuated money-discharge wheel joiirnaled in suitable bearings and a spring-actuated pawl which regulates the turn of the inoneydischarge wheel, of a money-reservoir leading to the said wheel, the inclined money-chute, and the rebatereondiiit leading to the free end of the spring-actuated pawl, substantially as set forth.
l1. rIhe combination, with a rebate-recep taele, the rebate-conduit leading thereto, and the inclined money-chiite, of the actuated money-discharge wheel, the money-reservoir operating therewith, and mechanism whereby the money is discharged from the reservoir in the desired quantity, substantially as set forth.
12. The combination, with a rebate-receptacle, a rebate-conduit, a iiioney-reservoir, and an inclined money-chute leading out of the box to a reeeiviiigvcup, of an actuated shaft carrying a money-discharge wheel, the periphery of which is provided with a double row of lugs; a ratchetwlieel and a winding-drum, a weight and flexible connection between the weight and winding-drum, and a spring-actuated pawl,one end normally loekiiigthe moneydischarge wheel, and a rebate-key adapted to drop through the rebate conduit, thereby striking the free end of the pawl, diseiigagiiig its opposite end from the teeth of the ratchet wheel, all arranged substantially as described.
