E. NORTON;
SHEET-METAL GAN. Y No.` 362,991.. Patented May 1'7, 1881;
g, o] l Fgf' B i,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
EDVIN NORTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND OLIVER W. NORTON, OF SAME PLACE.
SH EET-METAL CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,991, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed January 3, i887. Serial No. 223,507.
To all whom, may concern-.-
Be it known that l, EDWIN NORTON, a cilizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in SheetMetal Cans, of which the following-is a specification. Y
My invention relates to sheet-metal can and more particularly to improvements upon 1o the sheef-metal can heretofore patented to me in Letters Patent No. 277,920, of May 22, 1883. In the can shown and described in said patent a fold is formed in the flange of the can-head on the outside of the flange on the can-body, and
I5 in case the stock happens to crack in folding a leak may result.
In my present improvement the fold in the flange of the can-head is made inside the flange on the can-body, so that in case it should crack 2o in folding no leak will be occasioned. My present can may be made by the saine method or process as described in said patent.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which similar letters of referenceindicate like parts, Figure l is a section of a can embodying my in vention. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the can-head and can-body before the vertical flange on the can-head is folded outwardly to 3o unite it with the flange on the can-body.
In said drawings, A represents the can-bod y, having an inturned flange, a. B is the canhead, having a flange, I), the outer edge or rim, b', of which fits upon and outside the flange a (No model.)
ofthe canbody, while the lower or inner part of said flange is folded under or inside the flange a out against the -wall of the can-body. The flange a of the can-body is thus embraced between the outer flange or rim. b', of the can head and its inner fold, b2. The fold -I is 4o pressed flat, so that the flange a is closely interlocked between said fold and said rim or flange b.
The outer edge of the rim b' on the can-l1ead should just be flush with the outer surface of the can-body, and the depth of the flange b, as indicated in Fig. 2, should be just sufficient to bring the outer edge of the fold bl against the inner wall of the can-body when said flange B is folded outward, as shown in Fig. l.
I claim- The combination of can-body A, provided with an inturned flange, a, with can-head B, having a flange, the outer edge or rim, b', of which fits upon and outside said flange a of' 55 the eanbody, while the lower or inner part of said flange is folded under or inside said flange a out against the wall of the can-body, said flange a of the can-body being embraced between the outer rim, b', of the can-head and 6o its inner fold, b2, the outer edge of said rim b being flush with the outer surface of the canbody, substantially as specified.
EDVIN NORTON.
