Description

GRASSLER & CUTTER.
' Car Coupiing.
No. 36,293? Patented Aug. 26, 1862. i 17 @6.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. GRASSLER AND A. J. CUTTER, OF LEWISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEM ENT m CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,293, dated August 26, 1862.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM F. GRAss- LER and A. J. CUTTER, of Lewisburg, in the county of Union and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oar-Couplings; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whicli Figure 1 represents a top View of the stock or body of a car-coupler without the hingebolt and lever attached; Fig. 2, aninside view of same; Fig. 3, a front view of same; Fig. 4, a rear and top view with hinge-bolt, cap, and lever attached; Fig. 5, a front and top view with hinge-bolt, cap, and lever attached; Fig. 6, a View of the movable block. Figs. 7 and 8 represent front and rear views of the movable block with hinge-pin attached; Fig. 9, a side and front view of hinge-pin; Fig. 10, a view of cap with springs attached.
Like letters when on the respective figures indicate the same objects.
The nature of our invention consists in the arrangement and construction of certain parts of the coupler, ashereinafter deseribed, whereby the cars may be either coupled or uncoupled without any danger to the persons so engaged. We clainii, therefore, thefollowing advantages: first, that the cars in coming together couple themselves with the strong hinge-pin A; also, that the cars may be uncoupled while in motion by the use of thelever D. The changing of the lever D will also enable us to uncouple either from the top of the car or from the platform, as may be desired, or from the side, standing out of danger.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operations.
The draw-head, Fig. 1, is made of iron, the coupling-link 11 as usual, but of greater length, our coupling only requiring one link, the hinge-pins 7 and 8 in movable blocks B and B, which is held down in its place by the springs on plate 0, as shown in Fig. 5, said pin working in a joint and resting securely against acatch in the draw-head, as shown in Fig. 2, the whole constructed of iron. By taking hold of the leverDand moving it backward the hinge-pin A and block B are raised high enough to allow the coupling-link to be withdrawn from the draw-head, which, when done, by lettingloose of the lever D the springs attached to the cap 0 press the block B, to which the hinge-pin A is fastened, down to its proper place in the draw-head, again ready to receive the coupling-link, which, it will be perceived, is so arranged that it will pass into the draw-head and couple itself by the action of the cars coming together.
The whole apparatus is simple in construc tion, very effective and practical for the purpose, and, besides, is neither costly nor liable to get out of order in using.
Having thus fully described our improved car-coupler and pointed out its utility, what we claim as new therein, of our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The use of the hinge pin or bolt A in movable block B, in combination with the springeap O, to throw it back into position to be a self-coupler, also the lever D,when the same is used in combination withsaid hinge pin orbolt A and movable block B, as set forth and described.
