OHAUNGEY MILES BENNINGHAUS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,926, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed August 13, 1884. Serial No. 140,465. (Nomodcl) To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OimUNonY MrLEs BEN- NINGHAUS, of Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Labels for Packing- Oases, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is an isometrical view of a packingcase having my removable label attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a view on an enlarged scale of the label-holder removed from the box, with the label partially inserted.
Like letters of reference mark the same parts in all figures.
My invention relates to labels for packingeases; and it consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as will be first fully described, and afterward specitically pointed out in the claims, whereby a reversible label is provided, and which is simple in construction, easily manipulated, not liable to get out of order or be lost, and is very cheap.
Referring to the drawings, A is a packingcase, which may be of any ordinary or approved construction, the lid of which may be hinged or otherwise seen red thereto, and which may or may not, as desired, be provided with a hasp, B, or other suitable fastening.
Upon the top, side, or end of the case is secured by screws, nails, or other suitable fastening a sheet-metal label-holder, O, which consists ofa flat flange, a, which rests uponthe box or case, and is provided with perforations a, to receive the belore-mentioned screws, 800. From this 'llange a projects at right angles thereto a portion, 1). of the holder, which sup ports and joins another flange, c, lying parallel to the flange a. This label-holder may be constructed by beveling the metal in any suitable manner, stamping-in dies being the method at present preferred, and may be made of a single piece or of any number of pieces joined together. The end I) of the holder is open to admit of the insertion of label D, which is made of wood and painted, if desired. This labelholder is provided with a pin, (Z, which is normall y pressed inward by a spring, 6, through the upright flange Z).
The label D is provided with any suitable means, as at f, whereby to grasp and handle it, and on each of its edges, as at g, is provided with a notch and has its forward corners beveled off at h.
address, the label D is thus addressed and 6c pressed into position in the holder, the beveled corners serving as wedges to press back the springpin, which will ride over the edge of the labeland drop into one of the notches before mentioned. The label being in position, the box is shipped to its dCStlllZLtlOlL. After the case is emptied by the consignee, and it is desired to return the same to its owner, the spring-pin is withdrawn from the notch in which it rests, the label withdrawn from the holder and turned over so as to GX- pose the opposite side, upon which is the address of the owner, again pressed inward (the opposite beveled corner serving to press back the spring-pin) until the spring-piu engages with the opposite notch and securely holds the label in position.
The use of this device will obviate the necessity of labeling, marking, or tagging the box by the consignee, and leave him no excuse for improper marking and consequent loss of the ease in transit, as now very often occurs.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. The reversible label having its inward edges beveled off, as described, and provided on its opposite edges, near the outer end, with notches, in combination with a suitable holder provided with a single spring-pin adapted to engage alternately with the notches in either edge of the label when placed in a reversed position, as set forth.
2. The combination of the holder provided with flanges (a and c and upright portion 1), 95
the spriugimpelled pin passing through the portion 1), and the reversible label provided with beveled forward corners and notched in each edge near its outer end, and a perforation atf for handling, as and for the purposes set forth. V
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of subscribing wit-- ncsses.
