BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The invention relates to coke oven doors and more particularly to a flexible coke oven door that is economical and is self sealing. p
A principle difficulty in sealing a coke oven chamber of a horizontal coke oven battery is providing and maintaining an effective metal-to-metal seal between the coke oven doors and their respective door jams. While a coke oven door structure may provide adequate sealing at ambient temperature, it may not always provide adequate sealing at temperatures experienced under in-service conditions. But, it is particularly important to provide and maintain an effective seal between the coke oven door and its jamb at the temperatures experienced under in-service conditions.
A conventional coke oven door is usually a massive cast structure that comprises a marginal door frame portion and integrally fonned panels disposed between the door frame portion and latch bar supports. One thing that is apparent to those skilled in the art is that the massive conventional coke oven doors are not flexible, wherefore, they cannot and do not bend in service so as to conform to the door jamb which becomes arcuate under in-service temperature conditions.
How the coke oven door of the present invention accomplishes effective sealing of the coke oven chambers under inservice temperature conditions will be evident to those skilled in the art from the following description of one embodiment of the invention.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A coke oven door includes a rectangular door frame comprised of flexible side and end members and a door panel. A knife edge sealing ring is secured by a clamp to the door frame side and end members, and a pair of latch yoke frames are pin connected to the door frame.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawings wherein FIG. 1 is a schematic front elevational view of a coke oven door in accordance with the invention;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view along line II-II of FIG. l; and
FIG. 3 is a sectional view along line III-Ill ofFIG. 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION FIG. 1 illustrates schematically a coke oven door l1 that includes a lightweight door frame 13 that is sufficiently flexible to conform with a door jamb l5 and that forms a seal with the door jamb by means ofa sealing ring 17.
The door frame 13 comprises a planar door panel or diaphragm 19 which may be formed integrally or which may be attached as by welding to an edge ring 2l. The door frame 13 has a channel shape in cross section. The edge ring 2l is relatively narrow in dimension measured perpendicularly to the plane of the door panel 19, as may be noted from FIG. 3.
The edge ring 2l has a notch 23 in the upper outside portion thereof which receives the sealing ring 17, about as shown in FIG. 3; the sealing ring 17 having a beveled edge 25 that coacts with the door jamb 15 to provide a metal-to-metal seal therewith. The sealing ring 17 is endless and extends completely around the periphery of the door frame 13. An asbestos gasket 27 or the like is disposed between the sealing edge 17 and the notch surface 23, as may be noted from FIG. 3.
The sealing ring 17 is held in position by means of an endless clamp 29. The clamp 29 comprises a flat metallic band 3l that has a plurality of round bars 33, 35 welded to one surface of the band. The bars 33, 35 may be continuous or they may be intermittent, as desired. Also, they may be oval, square, or half-round in cross section, as desired.
The flat metallic band 31 has a beveled -upper edge and a plurality of countersunk holes therethrough in each of which there is disposed a bolt 37 that extends through registering holes in the edge ring 21. A nut 39 and lock washer 4l cooperate with each bolt to urge the band 3'1 against the sealing ring 17 and to hold it in place.
A plurality of cast door plugs 43 are mounted to liner retainers 45 that are bolted to the door panel 19 by means of a plurality of bolts 47, about as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3. Conventional refractory brick plugs, retained with conventional cast or fabricated liner retainers could also be used.
The door l1 is also providedwith a pair of latch yokes 49, 51 that are respectively pin connected to the door frame 13. Each latch yoke 49 and 5l is comprised of a pair of side rail members 53, 55, and intermediary transverse connecting rail member 57, and two end rail members 59, 61. The intermediary transverse rail member 57 supports a latch housing 63, and the lifting hook 65 is secured to the two side rail members 53,
55 of each latch yoke 49, 5l. The latch housing 63 supports a latch 64 that coacts with latch plates 66 that are attached to the door jamb to keep and maintain the door 1l in position closing the coke oven chamber.
Each latch yoke 49, 51 is connected to the edge ring 21 by means of a plurality of pins 67 that are disposed at the corners of the latch yoke, where shown in FIG. l. Each pin 67 is provided with a conventional locking device 69 to maintain it in place. While only four pins 67 connect each latch yoke to the door frame, those skilled in the art will recognize that a greater number of pins may be used if desired.
The door ll is also provided with a conventional wheeloperated leveller door that is hinged to the upper latch yoke 49 as suggested in FIG. l. However, those skilled in the art will recognize that any other type of leveller door may be used if preferred.
From the foregoing description several significant features and advantages of the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, which are:
That the door frame is flexible so that it readily conforms to the arcuate shape of the door jamb under in-service temperature conditions;
That the latching yokes apply sealing forces to the sealing ring at eight locations, and these eight pressure points keep the sealing ring in sealing contact with the arcuate door jamb; and
That the sealing ring is secured to the door frame by a simple mechanism that admits of quick and easy maintenance or replacement of the sealing ring whenever it is necessary.
What is claimed is:
l. In a coke oven door having a door frame, an improved sealing device that cooperates with a door jamb, comprising:
a a notch in the periphery of said door frame;
b. a sealing member having one edge shaped for coacting with said door jamb and thereby forming a gastight seal therewith adjustably disposed in said notch;
c. an endless band surrounding the periphery of said door frame in spaced apart relation thereto;
d. protrusions on said band that coact with said sealing member; and
e. means for urging said band toward said door frame and said protrusions against said sealing member whereby said sealing member is clamped in position relative to said door frame. The structure of claim l wherein: a. said means includes a plurality of adjustable fasteners coacting with said frame and said band. The structure of claim l wherein: said protrusions are rodlike members fixed to said band and arranged in spaced apart relation with said means disposed between said members.
