UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EGBERT s. MEAD, or WINONA, MINNESOTA.
WHlFFLETREE-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 362,768,dated May 10,1887.
Application filed March 18, 1887.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EGBERT S. MEAD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Winona, in the county of Winona and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WhiffletreeHooks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeletters or figures of reference marked thereon,
which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of my invention and is a top view of the same.
My invention relates to whifiietree-hooks; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as'hereinafter set forth.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a hollow metal shell, which is provided at its outer end with an upwardly-projecting integral hook, H.
In the outer portion of the hollow shell A is seated a-sliding plug, B, which is provided with a flanged neck, N, at its outer end, is re cessed at P in its inner end, and is provided with an annular stop-flange, T, aronndits inner end, said flange T resting normally against a shoulder, U, when the plug B is projected I Serial No. 231,418. (No model.)
outwardly in its seat by the coil-spring S. The
.outer end of the spring S rests in the recess 1? in the inner end of the sliding plug, and the inner end of the spring S is provided with an eye which is secured to the inner wall of the shell A by a pin, R.
IV is a portion of awhiffletrce, to the end of which the shell A is secured byapin or otherwise.
By pushing the plug B inwardly in its seat the eye on the lug may be engaged or disengaged from the hook H. The plug B, however, prevents the tugeye from becomingaccidentally disengaged from the hook. The construction is the same at each end of the whiffletree.
Having described this invention, 'What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination of the hollow shell prov vided with the internal shoulder and the projecting hook, the recessed and flanged sliding plug, the coil-spring, and its securing-rivet, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in
