- the length of ways 40 and 42 as well as the shaft 48 is chosen in a manner so that they may rotate through 360 when disposed at an elevation corresponding to the elevation of the adapters 16 and 22. When below the plane of the adapters 16 and 22, the vise jaws may rotate through a limited angle of approximately 90.
- a set screw having a handle 53 is provided for locking the shaft 31 to the hub 32 in any chosen angular disposition for the vises 44 and 46.
- a pattern plate 52 is removably supported on the member 18 and contains the printed matter to be engraved on the object.
- a stylus 54 is adapted to follow the printed matter on plate 52.
- Stylus 54 is supported at one end of arm 56.
- the other end of arm 56 is pivotably coupled to one end of arm 60 by pin 58.
- the other end of arm 60 is pivotably coupled to a carriage 64 by means of pin 62.
- Carriage 64 includes a rack 66 meshing with a pinion not shown.
- the pinion is rotatable by means of handle 68 to cause the carriage 64 to reciprocate toward and away from the support 18.
- An arm 70 has one end pivotably interconnected to the arm 60 intermediate the ends thereof by means of pin 72. See FIG. 2.
- the other end of arm 70 is pivotably connected to one end of arm 74 by means of pin 76.
- the other end of arm 74 is pivotably connected to arm 56 intermediate its ends by pin 78.
- the arms 56, 60, 70 and 74 which support the stylus 54 may be referred to as a pantograph.
- An engraving tool is supported by the pantograph and provided with a lever 82 which permits selective lowering of the engraving tool.
- Lever 82 is spring-biased upwardly.
- the engraving tool is supported by the arm 70.
- the jaws 44 and 46 may support a large fiat tray 84
- the jaws are provided with jaw extensions.
- Vise 44 is provided with jaw extension 86.
- Vise 46 is provided with jaw extension 88.
- the jaw extensions 86 and 88 are identical. Hence, only jaw extension 86 will be described in detail with corresponding elements being provided with corresponding primed numerals.
- the jaw extension 86 includes a plate 90 which is removably connected to the upper surface of the jaw 44 by means of screws 92.
- the plate 90 includes projections 94 and 96 in the form of blocks.
- the block 94 has a face 98 and block 96 has a face 100.
- the faces 98 and 100 lie in planes which converge in a direction away from vise 46 and are at an angle of approximately 75 with the horizontal.
- the faces 98 and 100 engage the tray 84 at spaced points adjacent one end of the tray.
- jaws 44 and 46 are provided with jaw extensions 102 and 102'.
- the extensions 102 and 102' are identical except as will be made clear hereinafter. Only jaw extension 192 is described in detail with corresponding primed numerals being provided for the extension 102'.
- the vise 44 is provided with a horizontally disposed bore 104 extending through a boss 108.
- a shaft 106 extends through the bore 104 and boss 108.
- the lefthand end of the shaft 106 is provided with a knob 11% and a reduced diameter portion adapted to abut the boss 108.
- the righthand end of shaft 106 is threaded.
- the extension 102 includes a main portion 114 having a downwardly extending leg 112.
- the threaded righthand end of shaft 106 is threadedly coupled to the leg 112 with a shoulder 113 resting on the upper surface of the jaw 44.
- the extension 102 is in intimate contact with the jaw 44 in vertical and horizontal directions. Adjustment of the knob 110 causes the leg 112 to firmly engage the vertical surface of the jaw 44.

- a cup 118 is rotatably supported by shaft 120 at the upper end of jaw extension body portion 114'.
- the cones 116 and 118 are interchangeable and made from a flexible resilient material such as rubber capable of having good frictional contact with the work piece.
- the cone 116 and cup 118 would be utilized when engraving a large trophy cup. Cone 116 would engage the bottom conical surface on the base of the trophy cup while cup 118 would enter the open mouth at the top of the trophy cup.
- the shaft 122 on which the cone 116 is supported is connected at its lefthand end in FIG. 4 to a gear 124.
- Gear 124 is in meshing engagement with gear 126 on horizontally disposed shaft 128.
- Shaft 128 is rotatably supported at its ends by the body portion 114 and provided with an actuating handle 130. Rotation of handle 130 will rotate the cone 116 and thereby cause the trophy cup or other curved object to rotate about the axis of shafts 120 and 122.
- the operation of the engraving machine will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art.
- the jaw extensions 114 and 114 will be utilized to support the ends of the curved object. Rotation of the object during engraving may be attained by manually rotating handle 130.
- jaw extensions 86 and 88 When it is desired to engrave large flatware such as a tray, jaw extensions 86 and 88 will be removably con nected to the vise jaws 44 and 46.
- the vise jaws 44 and 46 may be provided with jaw extensions positioned to extend toward each other. In each case, the jaw extensions embrace opposite sides or ends of the object being engraved without being physically connected to the object. In each case, the jaws 44 and 46 and their extensions may be moved upwardly or downwardly by actuating jack handle 36 and may be rotated about the axis of shaft 31 by loosening the set screw handle 53 and manually rotating the jaws to the desired angular position.
