Abstract
A PORTABLE TOOL WITH A PAIR OF BRUSHES OR OTHER ROTARY SURFACE CONTACTING FRICTION ELEMENTS IS MOUNTED ON A PORTABLE POWER SOURCE FOR DRIVING THE ELEMENTS. ONE OF THE BRUSHES OR ELEMENTS IS BODILY MAVABLE ABOUT THE AXIS OF A DRIVE SHAFT SO THAT OPERATION OF THE DRIVE SHAFT THROUGH FRICTION IN THE DRIVE MECHANISM MOVES THE BRUSH ANGULARLY TOWARD THE OTHER BRUSH, CAUSING THE TWO ELEMENTS TO CONTACT FRICTIONALLY AN ARTICLE INTERPOSED BETWEEN THEM.

C]. 15-23 7 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A portable tool with a pair of brushes or other rotary surface contacting friction elements is mounted on a portable power source for driving the elements. One of the brushes or elements is bodily movable about the axis of a drive shaft so that operation of the drive shaft through friction in the drive mechanism moves the brush angularly toward the other brush, causing the two elements to contact frictionally an article interposed between them.
NATURE A'ND OBJECTS OF INVENTION This invention relates to the cleaning and brushing of generally elongated articles of round, rectangular or other shape in cross section. The tool of this invention may be used for removal of dirt and grease, paint, scale, corrosion or other foreign matter. The invention is not limited to the use of brushes, as suitable abrading or buffing elements may be used for grinding, sanding or polishing as well as for cleaning.
The object of this invention is to provide a dual rotary brush type of tool for cleaning articles of various types, such as rods and wires and for removing scale and corrosion and foreign matter from such articles. This invention contemplates the use of relative movable rotating brushes driven by a portable power source, the driving force also causing the brushes or other friction elements to engage frictionally, the article to be cleaned or worked on. Other surface contacting friction elements may be used in place of brushes for grinding, sanding, or polishing, the dual rotary elements engaging opposite sides of the article affected.
The invention resides in a portable tool having a pair of rotating brushes or other surface contacting frictional elements which are mounted for operation by a portable power source. The tool is constructed so that operation of the motor of the power source rotates the brushes about their axes to clean or abrade an article placed between them, and also acts to cause the elements to move together, thereby increasing the pressure on the interposed article.

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the tool of this inven- DETAILED DESCRIPTION The tool 1 of the invention is mounted on a power source 2 which has a handle 3 and a control element 4 to energize the motor of the power source. The tool 1 has a casing 5 forming a support for the operating members, the flange 6 connecting the casing to the power source 2. The opposite end of the casing is formed by a removable plate 7.
A drive shaft provided with a conventional connection 11 for coupling to the shaft of the motor of power source 2 is journalled in the end plates 7 and 8 of the Patented Nov. 23, 1971 casing 5 by any conventional type of bearing 12. A gear 13 in the casing is fixed on drive shaft 10 for driving the pair of rotary brushes or other surface contacting friction elements.
A first driven shaft 15 carrying one of the brushes 16 is journalled in the end plates of the casing or support by bearings 17, 18 and projects through the end plate 7 with the brush 16 on its outer end. The gear 19 fixed on shaft 15 is in engagement with the drive gear 13 to drive shaft 15 and brush or other friction element 16 from the drive shaft 10.
A second driven shaft 20 is journalled in bearings 21 in one or more links 22 in casing 2. These links as shown are journalled on the drive shaft 10 in bearings 26 on opposite sides of the drive gear 31 so that they may move angularly about the drive shaft and drive gear. A gear 23 fixed on the second shaft 20 engages the drive gear 13 to rotate the shaft 20. An arcuate slot 24 is provided in the end plate 7 on a radius about the axis of drive shaft 10. The shaft 20 projects through the slot 24 with a second brush or other friction element 25 on its outer end and opposed to the first brush 16.
As viewed in FIG. 4, the drive shaft 10 and drive gear 13 are driven by the power source in a counterclockwise direction. When the tool is held upright, the second brush shaft 20 and brush 25 will lie at the lower end of the slot 24. Operation of the motor of power source 2 drives the shaft 10 and gear 13, and the engagement with gear 23 rotates shaft 20 about its own axis and also through friction moves the gear 23, shaft 20,, and links 22 about the axis of drive shaft 10. This movement causes brush 25 to move toward the brush 16, so that an article 30 between the bmshes or other frictional elements 16, 25 is engaged on both sides.
This tool when provided with suitable brushes may be used to clean scale or corrosion from rods and wires or other articles. Other types of friction elements may be used for buffing and polishing, or abrading elements can be used for sanding and grinding. When operation commences, and the brushes are moved against opposite sides of the article, the tool may be moved into any desired position, as the friction of the drive gears will hold the brushes against the article. Before starting operation, it is convenient, although not essential, to hold the tool upright with the shaft 25 in the lower end of slot 24. Of course, the two brushes may be separated manually or otherwise to place an article between them, if the upright position is not convenient.
The power source may be pneumatic, hydraulic or electrical, or any other suitable type. The portable type is most suitable for this operation, as it adds to the versatility of the tool.
We claim:
1. A portable tool for frictional rotary engagement of an article, comprising a support having means for connection to a power source, a pair of rotary surface contacting friction elements, means mounted on said support for rotating said elements connected to said power source, said means including a first shaft on which one of said elements is fixed journalled on said support, a drive gear operated by said power source, a second shaft on which the other of said elements is fixed journalled on said support for free bodily movement about the axis of said drive gear in the direction of rotation of said gear and toward said first shaft and element, a gear fixed on said first shaft engaging said drive gear for rotating said first shaft and element, and a gear fixed on said second shaft engaging said drive gear for rotating said second shaft and element, so that when said shafts are driven by said power source to rotate said rotary surface contacting friction elements, said second shaft and element are moved bodily toward said first shaft and element.
2. A portable tool for frictional rotary engagement of an article, comprising a support having means for connection to a power source, a pair of driven shafts on said support, driven gears fixed on said shafts, a pair of rotary surface contacting friction elements on said shafts, means to drive said driven shafts including a drive shaft for connection to said power source, and a drive gear connected to said drive shaft and engaging said driven gears to rotate said driven shafts and rotary surface contacting friction elements, one of said driven shafts being mounted on said support to move freely toward the other of said driven shafts about the axis of said drive gear and in the direction of rotation of said drive gear, so that said drive means rotates said rotary surface contacting friction elements and also causes movement of the one of said drive shafts and element toward the other element to engage an article between said elements.

A tool as claimed in claim 2, in which a plate member is mounted on said support for angular movement about the axis of said drive gear, and said one of said driven shafts is journalled on said plate member. 4. A portable tool for rotary brushing, comprising a casing having means for connection to a power source, a pair of driven shafts, brushes on said shafts outside of said casing, means to drive said driven shafts including a drive shaft connected to said power source, driven gears mounted in said casing and fixed on said driven shafts, and a drive gear mounted in said casing fixed on said drive shaft and engaging said driven gears to rotate said driven shafts and brushes, one of said driven shafts being journalled on a support means mounted in said casing to move freely about the axis of said drive gear for movement of said one shaft toward the other of said driven shafts and in the direction of rotation of said driven gear, so that said drive means rotates said brushes and also causes movement of said one of said shafts and brush toward the other brush to engage an article between said brushes.
5. A tool as claimed in claim 4, in which said support means comprises a plate member journalled on said drive shaft for movement about its axis, and said one of said driven shafts is journalled on said plate member.
6. A portable tool for rotary frictional engagement of an article comprising a power source having a handle element for holding the tool in a substantially upright position and control means for energizing said power source, a support fixed on said power source, a pair of driven shafts on said support, rotary surface contacting friction elements on said driven shafts, means connecting said power source to said shafts to rotate said shafts and rotary elements, including a drive gear driven by said power source, the first of said shafts being journalled on said support, the second of said shafts having a gear in engagement with said drive gear and journalled for angular free bodily movement about the axis of said drive gear and in the direction of rotation of said drive gear from a position below the first shaft upwardly toward said first shaft, so that when said power source is inoperative, the second of said shafts and its rotary element will be in its normal position below the first shaft and its rotary element, and when the power source is energized, the said shafts are driven and said second of said shafts and its rotary element are moved about the axis of said drive gear upwardly toward said first shaft and its rotary element.
7. A portable tool as claimed in claim 6, in which said support is a casing enclosing said gears, said drive gear is on a shaft driven by said power source and both driven shafts project from said casing and have said friction elements on their outer ends outside said casing, the first of said shafts is journalled in said casing above the axis of said drive gear, and the second of said shafts projects through an arcuate slot in said casing in which it moves from its normal position toward the first shaft.
