Description

UNITED STATES NELSON HORNADAY, OF WEST LKTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND PATENT OFFICEQ Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,215, dated August 19, 1862.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
y Be it known that I, NELsoN HoRNADAY, of West Elkton, Preble county, Ohio, have in- Vented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description' thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification.
This improvement relates to a form of fence for combining with the advantages of durabil ity those of great facility of construction, erection, and removal, the invention consisting, chiefly, in a peculiar construction of chair or upright havinga pair of oblique braces hinged at their lower extremities to a horizontal sill-v piece and notched at their upper extremities, which act to grasp the panels by the weight of the fence alone.
Figure l is a perspective View of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof. l
My chair or upright consists of a triangular frame of boards-namely, a horizontal sill, A, and two oblique braces, B B', of which one is hinged to each end of the sill by means of Aa stout nail, G. The top of each brace has a rectangular notch, D, longitudinal of the fence. The tops of the braces being overlapped, as represented, the two notches unite to form a seat, yD D, longitudinal with respect to the fence for the contiguous ends of two upper rails, E E', of a pair of consecutive panels.
It is apparent that the Weight of the panel, acting to depress the braces, causes the vertical sides d d of the seat to compress tightly the sides of the panel-rails, so to rmly hold the upper portion of the panels by the mere weight thereof without'the use of pins, which, besides f of fencing by shifting two adjacent chairs laterally and obliquely ofthe fence and then lifting out the panel. This operation, although brief and simple, demands intelligence and.
consecutive performances beyond the comprehension of animals.
It Will'be seen that the entire fencevmay be constructed of boards and a few nai1s the braces being got out Without waste, because the ysanne cut which forms the notched top of one brace completes the bottom of another.
I claim herein as new and of myinvention-` The arrangement of oblique braces B B', secured at their lower ends by pivots O C toa sill, A, and provided at their upper ends with notchesv D D, running longitudinally of the fence and forming a seat for the contiguous ,l
ends of the rails of two adjacent panels to rest in, the whole being combined in sucha manner that the downward stress of the panels continually acts to iirmly support and clamp the parts together, substantiallyas described.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto l set my hand.
NELsoN HOENADAY.
