EXTENSION-CHAIR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,066, dated May 3, 1887.

i To all whom it may concern:

full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a vpart of this specification.

My invention has reference to extensionchairs, and pertains more especially to certain novel mechanism for locking said chairs in different degrees of extension, and is here shown as applied to a rocking-chair.

In the drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation of a chair embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a crosssection of one of the arms in theline w :t of Fig. 1, exhibiting one of the modes of locking referred to. Fig. 3 is a partial front elevation of the lower portion of the chair, showing the lower extremity of the upholstery and, in dotted lines, the different altitudes of the foot-rest.

As both sides of the chair are identical in construction, I deem a description of but one side thereof sufficient.

A is the usual base of the chair, su pported on casters and having a sufficient rearward extension to preclude tipping backward when the chair is extended. i

B is the'rocker, which also forms the side of the seat of the chair. The lower and conveX side of the rocker B is seated on t-he base A, being attached thereto, in the usual mode, by a vertical spiral spring. (Not shown.)

C is the back of the chair, suitably hinged at its lower end to the rear end ofthe rocker B.

D is the leg-rest, hinged at its rear side, a suitable distance from its upper end, to the upper side ofthe front end of the rocker B.

E is the arm of the chair, and is suitably pivoted at its rear end to the front side of the back C and hinged at its front end to the top of the leg-rest D, in the manner hereinafter described.

The hinge F, which forms the junction of the front end of the arm E and the upper end of the leg-rest D, is formed of two circular plates, G, having, respectively, stems G integral therewith. The stem G of one plate G is fastened to the legrest D, the other stem G to the arm E. The stems G are formed eccentricall y on the plates G, and thelatter are placed against each other in a vertical plane, Fig. 3. A threaded bolt-hole is formed centrally in the inner plate G and a threaded thumb-bolt, H, suitably seated centrally in the outer plate G, so that its inner end shall enter and engage the said threaded hole in the contiguous plate G. The shank of the bolt H, above its threaded portion, by rotating in the outer plate G, furnishes the pivot for the hinge F. This bolt H has a dat head, Fig. 3, suitable to be grasped by the thumb and tinger of the occupant, and by turning said bolt the plates G can be mutually tightened or loosened, and thereby the joint formed by said plates rotating on said bolt made rigid or loose, and thereby the chair be locked in any desired position.

In the bottom of the arm Eis formed the longitudinal groove E, in which is suspended the slide K, the latter being carried in boxes L, seatedin said groove and suitably attached, by means of external iianges, L', to the bottom of the arm E. Holes L'l are formed in the boxes L in the line of the groove E', and said holes furnish ways for the movement of the slide K.

A thumb screw, M, is projected from the exterior of the arm E transversely through such arm and the outer Wall of the front box, L, and seated in threads formed in thelatter wall in position vto have its inner end screwed against the outer surface of the slide K. A pitman, N, pivotally connects the front end of the slideK to the lower edge of the plate G which is attached to the leg-rest D. The movement of the parts of the chair into the different positions of the latter necessarily iuvolves the movement of the upper end of the leg-rest D, and, through the medium of the pitman N, that of the slide K, and it is obvious that by means of the thumb-screw M impinging upon said slide K, the chair can be readily and securely held in any desired position. The thumb-screws M are so located as to be within convenient reach of the occupant in any possible position of the chair.

It will be noticed, Fig. 3, that the upholstery T does not extend to the foot-rest, leaving an interval above the latter to admit the feet of the occupant.

P is the foot-rest, which is supported in different altitudes in bearings S, attached to the front side of the leg-rest D, having its axle dropped into such bearings through the slot S therein.

My ohairyas completed, has very durable joints, can be very cheaply made, is comfortable to occupy, and can be very conveniently and satisfactorily adjusted.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-

In an extensionchair, the combination of the arm E, pivotally attached at its rear end to t-he back of the chair, the leg-rest D, hinged between its ends to the seat of the chair, the circular plates G, provided with stems or Shanks G', integral therewith and eccentrically thereto, and attached, respectively, by means of said shanks, to the front end of said arm E and the upper end of said leg-rest D, and the bolt H, seated centrally in said plates G and adapted to be screwed into the inner plate G of each pair and to form a pivotal seat for the outer of said plates, whereby the joint formed by said plates can be made rigid at any angle of the said arm and leg-rest, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
