TOILET PAPER HOLDER. V
No. 362,031. Patented Apr. 26, 1887.

CHARLES G. MORTIMER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOILET-PAPER HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,031, dated April 26, 1887.
Application filed December 2, I886. Serial No. 220,431. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs G. MORTI- MER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disinfecting and Deodorizing Toilet-Paper Holders,,of which the following is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has relation to improvements in toilet-paper holders; and it is especially designed for use in water-closets.
The object I have in view is to provide a paper-holding box or receptacle that will deodorize and disinfect the atmosphere of the room in which it is placed, as will more fully hereinafter appear. i
The invention consists, essentially, of an ordinary openended box for holding toiletpaper, having inserted in its bottom a block of wood or other material, which is provided with a depression or recess for the reception and retention of a disinfecting and deodorizing material, for the purposes herein set forth.
Referring to the annexed drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved holder with a portion broken away to show its internal construction, and Fig. 2 a transverse section of the bottom of the box, showing the disinfecting material.
Referring to the drawings annexed by letter, A designates a box open only at its top and designed to hold water-closet or toilet paper, the box to be secured in any desired or convenient place in awater-closet or other apartment. In the bottom of this box, and approximately the same size thereof, is placed, removably or permanently, a block of wood or other suitable material, B, which has upon its upper side a depression or recess, in which is placed a disinfecting and deodorizing ma terial, C. I prefer to construct the block B of wood, as that material will, to a certain extent, absorb and retain the disinfecting and deodorizing properties of the substance placed in its recess; but I do not limit myself to such material.
As a disinfectant and deodorizer I may use a compound of tar and camphor in suitable proportions, or any other disinfecting and deodorizing material or compound which may be suitable for the purpose. In placing the disinfectant in the recess in the block, I usually melt and pour it in, this method having been found to be the most practical, as when the material solidifies or hardens it becomes firmly attached to the block, and will not be displaced during transportation or use. It will thus be seen that as I construct the box the fumes or odors from the disinfecting and deodorizing material will impregnate the toiletpaper in the box and permeate the atmosphere of the room or apartment in which the holder may be placed.
I am aware that prior to my invention trays or boxes containing a moisture-absorbing material and provided with a perforated cover have been placed inv merchandise-receptacles for the purpose of protecting the articles therein from the effects of moisture.
My invention is distinguished from the above-noted inventiouin that I combine in a single article of manufacture a receptacle for toilet-paper and a disinfectant and deodorizer, which ismade in a simple and cheap manner and which will be eminently useful in every household.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
In a disinfecting and deodorizing toilet paper holder, the combination of an open-ended box, a block inserted in the bottom of the said box and provided with a depression or recess, and a disinfecting and deodorizing material placed in the recess in the said block, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES e. MORTIMER.
