PATENTEDuuv 16 I9?! v INVENTORS Charles R.Erlckson 8 Glenn C. Seibold ATTORNEY FIG.3.
PLOW BOTTOM COVER This invention relates to covers, more particularly the invention relates to covers for farm equipment.
It is an object of the invention to provide a novel cover for plow bottoms which may be easily attached and detached from the plow bottom to prevent the plow bottom from rusting from direct exposure to the atmosphere, wind, snow and other elements.
It is another object to provide a novel cover for rapidly covering the plow bottoms which eliminates the need for frequent oiling of the plow bottoms to prevent rusting of the plow bottoms.
It is another object of the invention to provide a novel cover for plow bottoms which snugly encloses or envelopes the working surface of the plow bottom to protect the surface.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description proceeds and when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIG. 1 is an outside elevational view of the plow bottom cover invention, shown installed on a conventional plow bottom.
FIG. 2 is an inside elevational view of the plow bottom cover shown operatively installed on a conventional plow bottom.
FIG. 3 is a front elevational view of the plow bottom cover shown operatively installed on a conventional plow bottom.
FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken along line 4-4 of FIG. 2.
Briefly stated, the invention comprises a plow bottom cover comprising of a pair of flexible fabric sheets having an outside contour generally conforming to the contour of a plow bottom, said sheets being attached to one another along their outside edges, one of said sheets having an elongated central hole, an elastic band attached to said one sheet adjacent the edge of said elongated hole and following the general outline thereof, said cover being adapted to slip over a plow bottom by inserting said plow bottom into said hole in said cover with said other sheet covering the working surface of said plow bottom, said elastic band acting to draw said sheet members snugly about said plow bottom when said cover has been attached to said plow bottom.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, in FIG. 1, the plow bottom cover 20 is illustrated operatively mounted to a conventional plow bottom 21.
The plow bottom cover invention 20 has an outside flexible fabric sheet member 27 made of waterproof material which covers the entire outside concave working surface 23 of the plow bottom 21 including its forward elliptical portion 21' and rearward downwardly inclined tail portion 21". The sheet member 22, along its forward elliptical portion has its outer edge 22", folded over or wrapped over the edges of the elliptical portion of plow bottom onto the back working surface 23' of the plow bottom 21.
The tail portion 22" of the sheet member 22 has its outermost edges 24 terminating adjacent the contour edge 25 of the tail portion 21 of the plow bottom.
A second flexible fabric sheet member 26, substantially smaller than sheet member 22, covers only tail portions of the back working surface 23' of the plow bottom and with its outermost edge 27 along the tail portions terminating adjacent the outermost edge 24 of the sheet member 22, and is sewn together by threaded material 28.
The first sheet member 22 and second sheet member 26 are also sewn together along threaded lines 27 formed by threads, until they reach the elliptical opening 29.
Thus the first sheet member 27 and second sheet member 26 together form cover which completely surrounds or envelopes the plow bottom 21 except for the elliptical opening 29 and together they form the elliptical opening 29.
The edges 30 and 30' of the first sheet member 27 and second sheet member 26, adjacent the elliptical opening 29 are folded back to form an elliptical channel 31 along the elliptical opening and are sewn by thread 32 in this position. An
The sheet members 22 and 26 together form a cover 20 which is slightly longer than the plow bottom 21, however, the elastic band 32 is smaller in length than the elliptical channel 31, so that when the band is mounted in the elliptical channel it tends to draw or bunch the edges 30 and 30 together, forming the elliptical opening 28, thus drawing the sheet members 22 and 26, or in other words the cover 20, snugly around the plow bottom thus drawing the opening smaller.
The cover 20 may be easily attached by inserting the plow bottom into the cover through the opening 29 and positioning it as illustrated in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3.
The plow bottom 20 is conventionally mounted to a standard 35 by means of braces 36 and the cover 20 has an elliptical opening 29 of sufficient size so as to allow room for this mounting.
The cover 20 is made of waterproof material and will keep rain, snow and other elements from contacting the working surface of the plow bottom and thereby reduce and minimize the rusting of the working surface of the plow bottom when otherwise allowed to stand out of doors without any further treatment.
It has normally been necessary to apply oil and grease to the working surface of the plow bottom at the end of each day after using the plow for plowing, to prevent the plow bottom from rusting out or pitting. However, it has been found that by utilizing the cover 20 and attaching this to the plow bottom 21 at the end of each day this is sufiicient to prevent the working surface of the plow bottoms from rusting.
Thus the plow bottom with the covers attached may stand out in the open for long periods of time without any need to oil or lubricate the plow bottom and that when the plows are used daily for plowing, by attaching the plow covers to the plow bottom each evening after plowing, there is no need to lubricate the bottoms as the cover effectively prevents dew and moisture in the air from collecting on the plow bottom during the evening and causing rusting and pitting.
Thus it will be seen that a novel device has been provided for covering plow bottoms to prevent their rusting from exposure to the moisture in the air and other elements.
It will be obvious that various changes and departures may be made to the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and accordingly it is not intended that the invention be limited to that specifically described in the specification as illustrated in the drawing but only as set forth in the appended claims wherein:
What is claimed is:
1. A plow bottom cover in combination with a plow bottom formed of a moldboard and share, a standard having its lower end attached to the rear face of said plow bottom, said plow bottom having a generally elliptical forward end portion along the moldboard and a generally pointed rearward end portion along the share, said cover comprising a flexible from sheet and a flexible rear sheet, said front and rear sheets each having prefonned generally elliptical forward end and a preformed generally pointed rearward end corresponding to the configuration of the moldboard and share of the plow bottom, said front and rear sheets being connected together along their top, bottom, forward and rearward edges, said front sheet covering the entire front face of the moldboard and share, said rear sheet covering a major portion of the rear face of the moldboard and share including the entire outer circumferential rear face of the plow bottom and including the entire rear face of the share, said rear sheet having a central opening surrounding the attachment of the standard to the plow bottom. elastic string means on said rear sheet extending about said opening to draw said opening together to snugly attach said cover to said plow bottom, said opening being of a size whereby when said elastic string means are expanded said opening will be enlarged sufficiently to enable said cover to be detached from said plow bottom via said opening.
