SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. Application filed August 7,1886. Serial No. 210,274. (No model.) Patented in Canada June 12, 1886, No.
361,979, dated April 26, 1887.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN G. 'BALLEW, :a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guides for Machines for Sawing Hoops, (for which I have obtained a patent in the Dominion of Canada,
No. 24,279, bearing date of June 12, 1886;)
and I do hereby declare that the following is a a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use means for twisting the the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and-in which Figure l is a proved guide for hoop-sawing machines. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the parts of the guide separated.

My invention has relation to guides for guiding hoop-poles to band-saws, so as to cause the off from the pole,

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a U-shaped frame or carrier, which is secured to the frame of the sawing-machine by one of its arms, and which is formed at the ends of its arms withfbearings BB, having openings at one side of a less diameter than the diameter of the bearings. " The uprights I I have their screw-threaded ends J inserted in perforations K in the plates O 0 near the rear edges, and are secured in them by means of nuts L, bearing against the upper faceof the upper plate and the under side of the lowerplate, andone of these uprights is formed at its middle with a screwthreaded perforation, N in which a set-screw, 0,. or adjusting-screw fits and turns. The end of this screw is journaled in the middle of an upright frame, P, which is formed with grooves Q in the sides near the ends, and slides with these grooved portions in slots R R in the upper and loweriplates, C, the said slots opening through the outer edges of the said plates directly in front of the vertical grooves 01: recesses E E, and the grooved portions fitin the slots, so that the flanges formed outside of the grooves slide upon the outer faces of the plates at the edges of the slots, while the shoulders formed below and above the grooves will slide upon the inner faces of the plates, thus preventing the ends of the frame from binding in the slots when being moved back and forth by the adjusting-screw O.
The outer edge of the frame F is cut out so as to bring the grooved portionstoprojectfo ward as two arms, and the trunnions of a rolle S, are journaled in the said ends, the roller being thus journalcd vertically in the recess formed by the arms of the frame being in a line with the toothed edge of the saw-blade.
The vertical portion of the U-shaped frame or carrier A is provided near its upper end with a cross-piece, T, ahd two screws, U U, pass through the perforated ends of this crosspiece, and have coiled springs V V secured to yokes W W,swiveled upon the ends of the screws, and these springs are secured at their other ends to the inner edge of the upper plate 0, near the ends of the said edge.
The band-saw X passes through the grooved projections of the plates and has the blocks in the said projections bearing against its sides, and the outer side of the roller will at all times be in a line parallel with the faces of these wooden blocks, and consequently with the sides of the saw.
It will now be seen that when a hoop-pole is fed to the saw the side of the pole will bear against the outer side of the roller, and if the said pole has anyuneven places in it the end of the pole is swung around by the operator, so that the outer surface oft e hoop is kept at all times parallel with the si e of the saw, or as nearly so as possible, the springs permitting the frame to give sufficiently to keep the saw from breaking if it should happen to bind as the hoop is being turned. I
By turning the screw passing through the upright of the frame carrying the sliding upright roller the frame may be drawn outward or inward, regulating the ickness of the hoop,and the wooden blocks, 'hich, however, may be of any other soft mat rial which will guide the saw-b1ade without wearing it, may be adjusted and secured in their apertures or recesses by means of their binding-screws in the sides of the apertures. r
Modifications of this guide may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention-such as substituting two parallel rollers in the outer edges of the plates,instead of one roller--and the guide may be used with saws running in a vertical line or in a horizontal llne, the U shaped frame or carrier being capable of being adjusted and secured to the frame of any machine for sawing hoops.
