UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL S. \VING, OF SYRACUSE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-EIGHTH TO WILLIAM A A. CAMERON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAND-TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,913, dated April 26, 1887.
Application filed October 14, 1886. Serial No. 216,275. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL S. WING,a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improve ments in Hand-Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
, The object of this invention is to increase the durability and to simplify the construction of trucks. This object is accomplished by means of the device set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section.
Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a detail plan View, partly in section. Fig. 4 is a side elevation, partly in section, ofa cheek-piece and adjacent parts. Fig. 5 is a front view, partly in section, of a cheek-piece and adjacent parts.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letters A A indicate side bars of the truck, provided with handles and connecting cross-pieces K K K. The ends of the crosspieees are set into the side bars. To each side 2 bar is fixed a standard, S, provided with lugs,
through which pass the bolts 1? and Q. The bolts P also pass through the ends of the crosspieee K, thus securing said cross-piece to the side bars. A connecting-strap, R, is riveted or bolted at O to the standards and atT to the cross-pieceK. The standards and connectingstrap are made of wroughtiron or other suitable material. Said standards offer a firm bearing for one end of the truck. 3 5 To the side bars are secured shoes or stirrups B B, terminating in V-shaped projections O O. The pieces B B are provided with slots F F, for the reception of bolts E E. Said pieces 13 B can thus be adjusted the length of the slots F by loosening the bolts E. The V-shaped projections terminate in points, as seen, and are provided with reverse branches, and said projections are connected by a crossbar, G, extending between the inner ends of the reverse branches of the V-shaped projections. Said cross-bar O is depressed beneath the plane of the forward cross-bar, K, as seen in Fig. 2. Any substance resting on the cross-bar K will thus not press too heavily on the cross-bar C, 50 and at the same time the cross-bar O prevents the V-shaped projections from spreading or i being forced apart during loading or unloading of the truck.
To the side bars, A, are attached,-by bolts G or other suitable means, upper cheek-pieces, p. 5 5 To the upper cheek-pieces, 1), and preferably formed-integral therewith, are connected the lower cheek-pieces, p. The upper and lower cheek-pieces are connected by ajoining-piece or bracket, D. The joining-piece or bracket 6c and upper and lower cheek-pieces, p, clasp the side bars, A, as seen in Fig. 5.
In the lower cheek-pieces, p, are journaled pivots 1), on which swing standards or bearings I. Stops M limit the motion of the standards I in one direction. The standards or bearings I are provided with journals for the axle J, on which are mounted wheels L, on which the truck can run. Then the truck is placed on end, as seen in Fig. 1, the side bars, A, are swung on the pivots 11 until the side bars, A, and standards I occupy the positions indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l. The truck now rests on the V-shaped projection O and upon the legs N of the standards or bearings 7 5 I, and the wheels L are out of contact with the ground. The truck can thus be made to stand firmly during loading and unloading.
Spring-hooks U U are pr0vided,in which to clamp a hook used during loading and unload; 8o
ing the truck.
When clamped into the spring-hooks, such loading-hook is not in the way of any one handling the truck, and is at the same time easily accessible. the standards S for attaching the spring-hooks U to the side bars, A, independent attaching devices for the spring hooks are rendered unnecessary, thus cheapening the construction of the device. By forming each standard I integral with the legs N and stop M the construetion of the device is strengthened.
I do not in this application claim anything set forth or claimed in United States Patent No. 310,485, dated January 6, 1885.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the side bars, A A, cross-bars,and wheels L,of standards S, springhooks U, and bolts P Q, connecting said stand- 10c ards and spring-hooks to the side bars, substantially as set forth.
By using the bolts P Q of 85 of abracket, D, having cheek-pieces p p, pro-.
jecting in one direction, for securing said bracket to the side bars and cheek-pieces p 1),
proj ecting in the opposite direction, pivot p 15 supported by the cheek-pieces p, legs N, mounted on the pivots p stops M and bearings Least or formed integral with the legs N, the axle J, mounted in the bearings I, and the wheels L, substantially as set forth. 20
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two-subscribing witnesses.
