To all whom, it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, MARTIN DAVID WIsoH- KEB, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, residing at the city of Riga, in the Empire of Russla, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Sawing-Machines, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Belgium, No. 72,954, dated May 1, 1886; in Denmark, dated August 20, 1886; in Norway, No. 150, dated May 22, 1886; in Sweden, No. 544, dated May 6, 1886; in England, N 0. 5,997, dated May 8,1886; in Austria Hungary, dated October 15, 1886, andin France,dated January 7,1887,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved sawing-machine, in which a short saw-blade can be held and guided in such a manner that it can be subjected to tension and compression strain without bending or doubling.
The invention consists in the combination, with a holder for the saw-blade, of mechanism for reciprocating the holder, a vertically-adjustable sawing-table, on which the board to beesawed is placed, and a guide-slot in said table.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a cross-sectional View of my improved sawingmachine, parts being broken out. Fig. 2 is a similar sectional view, showing other parts. Fig. 3 is a side View of a sawing-machine. Fig. 4. is a plan view of the table; and Fig. 5 1s a sectional view on the line A B, Fig. 2.

the jaw a projecting some distance below the lower end of the jaw a The j aw a is provided in its inner surface with a recess, in which the vertically-reciprocating rod a is guided, said rod being provided at its upper end with a cross-piece, D, having a slot or recess, E, and a cam portion, b. Apin, 0, projects from the end of a disk, d, mounted on a shaft, 6, journaled in an upwardly-projecting part of the arm 0, which pin can pass into the slot E of the cross-piece D. The saw-blade sis guided in the groove a in the inner side of the jaw a, and said blade is provided near its upper end with alaterally-projecting lug, s, which fits into a corresponding recess of the reciprocating rod (0, whereby the saw-blade and rod are coupled.
The shaft 6 may be revolved by hand or ma-' chine power, as desired. The sawing-table f is provided at its center with a steel plate, f, provided with a circular opening for the sawdust, and a notch, f", in the edge of said opening for the purpose of guiding the lower edge of the saw-blade s. The table f is secured on a vertically-movable support, F, guided in a yoke, G, secured to the under side of the frame. Through the lower end of the yoke a-screw, h, is screwed, the upper end of which is mounted to turn in part of the support F, a hand-wheel, h, being secured to the lower end of the screw. By turning the hand-wheel the table f is moved up or down. The support F is provided with a groove, J, for carrying oft the sawdust. The table f is so adjusted that the distance between the lower end of the jaw a and the top of the table is about equal to the thickness of the piece of wood to be sawed. The upper end of the saw-blade is guided in the groove a" and the lower end in the notch f", and the jaw a is of such a length that the free end of the blade is always in the notch f", so that the saw is guided and cannot bend or double over, as the space between the lowerend of the notch of the table f is too small to admit of such doubling or bending. A short sawblade may thus be used advantageously for the same purpose for which a bandsaw or jig-saw held at the top and bottom are now used. The saw is fastened and unfastened easily and rapidly, and is held securely.
When the disk (1 is revolved in the direction of the arrow at, Fig. 2, the pin 0 enters the notch or recess E of the cross-piece D and the the saw-bar, a vertically-reciprocating bar mounted to slide in said recess, and a sawblade connected to said bar and adapted to slide in said groove, substantially as described.

low the other, the longer jaw having a guidegroove for the saw-blade and the shorter jaw a recess for the saw-bar, a vertically-reciprocating 'sawb ar mounted to slide in said recess, and a saw-blade connected to said bar and adaptedto slide in said groove, substantially as described.
3. In a sawing-machine, the combination of two elongated jaws, one of which hasa groove for. guiding the saw-blade and the other a recess for the saw-bar, a vertically-reciprocating saw-bar mounted to slide in said recess, a sawblade connected to said bar and adapted to slide in said groove, and a vertically-adjust- I able table below said jaws, said table being provided wit-h a notch for guiding the free end of the saw-blade.
4. In a sawing-machine, the combination, with a box having a longitudinal groove for guiding the bar, of a reciprocating bar-within the box, a notch in said bar for receiving a projection of the saw-blade, a frame adapted to be moved toward and from the said box by means of a screw, which frame has an aperture or channel for carrying off the sawdust, and a table having a notch forguiding the free end of the saw, the table being on said frame, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a sawing-machine, the combination, with the arm 0, of the jaws a a the former having a guidegroove,a, the saw-blade s, having the lug s, and the reciprocating bar a, having a notch for receiving the lug s, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a sawing-machine, the combination, with a box for guiding the blade, of a reciprocating bar in said box, the cross-piece D on said bar, which cross-piece has a slot or recess, E, and a cam part, b, the end disk, d, mounted on a shaft, e, and provided with the pin 0, and a table having a notch for guiding the free end of the saw-blade, substantially as shown and described.
