ZYGMUNT FLORYANOVVIOZ, OF \VARSAlV, RUSSIA.
CAR-STA RTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,753, dated April 26. 1887.
Application filed September 510, 1586. Serial No. 213,985. (No model.) Patented in Belgium August 30. 1586, No.74,393.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZYGMUNT FLORYA- NOlVl CZ, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, residing at the city of Warsaw, in the Empire of Russia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Starters,of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved car-starter of simple construction; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the front part of a car provided with my improved carstarter. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, parts being broken out. Fig. 3 is an end view of the starter, parts being broken out. Fig. 4 1s a sectional view of the front part of a car and the starter, the starter being in a different position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
On the hub of each driving-wheel A, or on each end of the axle A of the driving-wheels, is fasteneda cog-wheel,a, and at said cog-wheel a a rocking lever, Z), is mounted on the axle, to which lever bis pivoted the pawl c, engaging the teeth of the ratchet-wheel a. The levers b are connected by connecting-bars d and f with the ends of the cross-bar 9, provided atits center with a carriage, i, which is mounted to slide between the two longitudinal horizontal rails 7c is below the platform of the car, which rails k k. are united at their ends by the vertical bars k If.
The carriage i is provided with a pivot, 13', on which a double-tree, h, is mounted to swing in a horizontal plane, and to the ends of the double-tree the rods t are united, to the front end of which rods singletrees can be fastened. Each rod f runs on a roller, 00, supported in a forked hanger secured to and projecting downward from the under side of the car-platform. The carriage i is provided in the front part with an aperture, g, for receiving the hook end of a lever, m, pivoted in the front vertical bar, k, of the frame in which the carriage slides.
A- spring, on, on the lever m presses the in nor or hook end of the same downward. The front or outer end of the lever m is connected to the rod a, passing through the car-platform, and having a foot-plate, a; or the said rod a can be carried up higher and provided with a handle. The rod n is provided with an aperture, a, through which the pin r can be passed for the purpose of locking the rod n in place.
A buffer-springs, of any suitable construction,
is provided on the front part of the frame on which the carriage slides.
A rope or chain, Z is fastened to the hook g at the rear end of the carriage i, and has its other end secured to the drum Z, suitably journaled in bearings projecting from the under side of the platform. Said drum contains a spring, one end of which is secured to the shaft Z of the drum and the other end to the side of the drum.
2010 are buffersprings, agai nst which the rod 9 can strike.
a a, Fig. 3, are transverse rollers on the nu der. side of the platform to prevent the rods t from injuring the under side of the platform. When the carriage is moved in the direction of the arrow at, Fig. 1, the levers b are thrown forward, and asqthe pawls are engagedwiththe ratchet-wheels a, the wheels A of the car are revolved in the same direction. The pawls continue to revolve the wheels until the carriage t arrives at the front end of its guidcframe, when the hook on snaps in the aperture in the front end of the carriage, which is then looked in position. By means of the movable carriage i the chain Z is unwound from the said drum Z, whereby the spring is coiled. When the car has stopped and is to be started again, the horses are backed for a short distance and the foot plate of pressed down, whereby the hook end of the lever m is raised and the carriage i released, whereupon it is drawn in the inverse direction of the arrow 0/ by the action of the spring in the drum Z, and thus the levers b (Z and pawl c are brought back into the position shown'in Fig. 1, ready to start the car again. At the end of the trip, when the car is to be run in. the inverse direction, the carriage i is not unlocked, and the levers IOC Z) (Z and pawl 0 remain in the position shown in I Fig. 4:. A device such as that described is provided at each end of the car.
For the purpose of preventing the carriage from being disengaged accidentally from the latch m, the bolt or pivot r is passed through the aperture n of the rod 12, thus preventing said rod n from being moved downward.
I am aware that car-starters have been made with the ratchet-wheels on the axles, rocking levers carrying pawls for operating the ratchets, which rocking levers are operated by bars connected with a single or double tree to which the animals of draft are hitched.
I am also aware that car-starters have been provided with springs for drawing the carstarters in the inverse direction of thatin which they are drawn by the animals.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to soon re by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a wheel and axles,
' of ratchet-wheels on the wheels or ax'les, rocking levers on the axles, pawls on the rocking levers, a sliding carriage provided with a cross-bar connected with the rocking levers,'a single-tree pivoted on the sliding crossbar, and a latch for locking the sliding cross-bar in place when it is drawn as far as possible in the direction from the axle, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a car-starter, the combination, with an axle and wheels, of ratchet-wheels on the driving wheels or axles, rocking levers on the axles, pawls on the levers, a sliding cross-bar connected with the rocking levers, a carriage 011 said cross-bar guided in a suitable frame, a double-tree on the pivot of the carriage, a spring for drawing the carriage and cross-bar in a direction toward the axle, and a latch for locking the carriage and cross-bar in place when drawn as far as possible from the axle,
, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a car-starter, the combination, with an axle and wheels, of ratchet-wheels on the driving wheels or axles, rocking levers on the axles, pawls pivoted on the rocking levers, a
sliding cross-bar connected with the rocking levers, a carriage on the cross-bar, a guideframe for guiding the carriage, a double-tree pivoted to the carriage, a spring for drawing the carriage toward the axle, a buffer-spring, s, at the front end of the carriage-guide, a pivoted latch, m, above the spring, and a rod, a, connected with the pivoted latch m, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a car-starter, the combination, with wheels, of ratchet-wheels, rocking levers on the axle, pawls 0n the rocking levers, a sliding cross-bar connected with the rocking levers, a
carriage on said crossbar, a frame for guiding the carriage, a double-tree pivoted to the carriage, a latch, m, at the front end of the carriage, a spring, at, acting on the said latch, an upwardly-projecting rod on the latch, a foot-plate, 41*, on the rod 42, a butter-spring below the latch, the pin r for locking the rod in place, and the spring for drawing the carriage toward the axle, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination, with an axle and wheels, of ratchet-wheels on the axles or wheels, rock ing levers on the axles, pawls pivoted to the
