The slot terminates short of the opposite end of the roller. The edges of the slot diverge at its open end t facilitate reception of hair into the slot. The hair is initially rolled about a first roller and the larger diameter slotted roller is received axially about the finst roller with the rolled hair about the first roller extending through the slot of the second roller. The hair is then rolled about the slotted roller. A third roller having a similar slot formation and a larger diameter than the second roller is receivable axially about the first and second rollers, with the rolled hair about the second roller extending through the slot in the third roller.
The present invention relates to an improved hair styling device and particularly relates to novel, improved hair styling rollers and roller sets which are particularly eifective in forming spiral or cascade type curls for long hair and tight curls for short hair.
Various hair styling implements are commonly in use today for setting or styling hair to provide the large number of hair styles currently in vogue. A common implement currently employed t0 effect such styles is the cylindrical shaped roller. In a common use of this implement, the hair is rolled about the roller, and, when unrolled, brushed and styled, a gentle wave in the hair is effected. These rollers are sometimes employed to provide a long wave in the hair with a tight curl or flip at the bottom.
One of the more popular and current hair styles is the cascade curl. This style includes a spirally arranged curl having a diminishing diameter from the base to the tip of the hair with the lower end of the hair comprising a very tight, small diameter curl. Another currently popular hair style is the curly look. t has been found extremely difficult to obtain tight and unif0rm curls in these hair styles and especially to obtain a tight end curl in the cascade style. The foregoing described rollers are simply inefiective to provide desired uniform and tightly wrapped curls and are particularly ineffective in providing the currently popular cascade or curly type hair styles.
The present invention provides a novel, unique improved hair styling device which alords uniformly tight curls. The present hair styling device is particularly effective to obtain curls in the spiral or cascade style wherein the hair spirals or curls in a diminishing diameter with the lower ends having an extremely small diameter curl as well as in the curly style for short hair. T0 these ends, the present invention provides a roller having a slot extending axially through a wall thereof with the slot opening at one end of the roller. The slot extends for substantially the full length of the roller, terminating short of the opposite roller end. The edges of the slot at the open end diverge one from the other to facilitate reception of hair within the slot. The roller is also provided with a plurality of circumferentially and axially spaced openings through the roller wall to facilitate drying the hair.
The present hair styling slotted roller is preferably provided in a set of similarly slotted rollers of graduated diameters such that the rollers can be arranged concentrically with the rolled hair lying in the annular spaces between the different diameter rollers as described here inafter. The smallest diameter roller of the roller set may comprise a conventional non-slotted roller for starting the rolled hair but may be of the slotted type as desired.
In utilizing the present novel, improved rollers and the roller set, the hair is first rolled in the usual fashion about the smallest diameter conventional roller or the smallest diameter slotted roller is desired. The next larger diameter slotted roller is then inserted axially about the first or initial roller and the rolled hair thereabout, with the hair extending therefrom entering the slot in this next larger diameter roller through its open end. The roller assemblage, constituting the now concentrically arranged, diametrcally graduated rollers, and the rolled hair therebetween is then rotated to roll additional hair about the second or larger diameter roller. For particularly long hair, a third langer diameter and similarly slotted roller is receivable axially about the first and second roller assemblage with the rolled hair about the second roller extending therefrom through the slot of the third roller. This three roller assemblage is then rotated to roll additional hair about the third larger diameter roller.
Significant advantages are etfected by the foregoing roller arrangement. In the first instance, an extremely small diameter tight curl is obtained by first rolling the hair about the initial smaller diameter roller. This results in a very tight curl at the ends of the hair. Additionally, by utilizing a slotted larger diameter roller, a larger diameter curl is obtained intermediate the ends and base of the hair. By using rollers of graduated diameters with the hair hein-g rolled successively thereabout in a direction toward the base of the hair, curls of increasing diameter in a like direction are provided. Thus, a spiral or cascade type style, having curls of dimimshing diameter toward the hair ends is efiected. Moreover, by employing a plurality of slotted rollers which are axially offset one from the other, a spiral type curl is more readily elfected.
Accordingly, it is a primary object of the present invention to provide a novel, improved hair styling device.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a novel, improved hair styling device particularly useful for cascade or spiral type hair styles.
'It is still another object of the present invention to provide a novel, improved hair styling device useful for short hair to effect a short curly appearance.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a novel, improved hair styling device which is readily and easily utilized.
It is a still further object of the present invention to provide novel, improved hair styling rollers which may be readily and easily manufactured of inexpensive materials.
It is a related object of the present invention to provide a set of novel, improved rollers having graduated diameters which are each characterized by an axially extending slot opening through one end of the rollers to receive hair wrapped about and extending from a next smaller diameter roller When the rollers are concentrically arranged in use.
These and further objects and advantages of the present invention Will become more apparent upon reference to the following specificafion, appended claims and drawings, wherein:

Referring now to the drawings, particularly to FIG. 1, there is illustrated a novel, improved hair styling device constructed in accordance with the present invention and comprising a set of two or more rollers of graduated diameters, the rollers 10 and 12 being of novel improved construction and the smallest diameter roller 14 being a roller of conventional type. The smallest diameter roller 14 is employed as a starting roller in use, as hereinafter described, and is generally cylindrical in shape, having a plurality of circumferentially and axially spaced openings 16 thereabout to facilitate drying the hair. It will be appreciated from the ensuing description, that a slotted roller of the type indicated at 10 or 12 but having a diameter corresponding to the diameter of roller 14 may be utilized as the starting roller in lieu of the conventional roller 14.
The hair styling roller set includes one or more slotted rollers of the type illustrated at 10 and 12, the diameter of roller 12 being slightly larger than the diameter of roller 10 such that roller 12 can be inserted about roller 10 t define an annular space therebetween for purposes as will become clear. Each of the rollers 10 and 12 is provided with an axially extending slot 18 through its generally cylindrical wall. The slot 18 opens through one end of the roller as indicated at 20. The slot 18 extends from the open end for substantially the full length of the roller and terminates short of the opposite end of the roller as at 22. Preferably, the slot 18 extends from the open end 20 for a distance of about 90% of the length of the roller. To facilitate the reception of hair within the slotted portions of rollers 10 and 12 as will be described hereinafter, the end edges of the slots, indicated at 24 diverge outwardly one from the other. It will be appreciated that edges 24 could be rounded or flared rather than straight as illustrated. The opposite end of the roller constitutes a closed ring portion indicated at 26. The rollers 10 and 12 are also provided With a plurality of circumferentially and axially spaced openings 28 to facilitate drying the hair when the latter is rolled about rollers 10 and 12 in a manner set forth hereinbelow.
The rollers lit), 12 and 14 are preferably formed of a plastic material whereby their manufacture is relatively inexpensive. It will be appreciated, however, that the rollers can be formed of metal or other material, as desired. Preferably, the diameter of roller 14 is about inch and the diameter of roller 10 is about inch. The diameter of roller 12 is about 1 inch. The wall thicknesses are very small and With rollers of these dimensions, annular spaces are provided between the rollers in use as will presently become clear.
In utilizing th hair styling device of the present invention, the ends of the hair are rolled about the starting roller 14 in a conventional manner as illustrated in FIG. 2. After a suflicient number of turns of roller 14, usually about one and one-half or two turns, the next larger diameter slotted roller is received axially about the smaller diameter roller 14. Particularly, the roller 10 is inserted about or telescoped over roller 14 and over the hair rolled thereabout in the direction of the arrow indicated in FIG. 3 with the rolled hair extending from roller 14 being received through the diverging opening 20 and into the slot 18 of roller 10. When fully inserted about roller 14, it will be seen that rollers 10 and 14 lie in concentric relation With the hair rolled about roller 14 being located in the annular space between rollers 10 and 14. This roller assemblage is then rotated to roll the hair emerging through slot 18 about the external surface of roller 10 as illustrated in FIG. 4. It will thus be appreciated that the diameter of the rolled hair about roller 10 is smaller than the diameter of the hair about roller 14. It will also be recalled that the hair rolled about the inner or starting roller 14 is that hair which constitutes the ends or tips of the hair When the hair is finally styled and that the hair about roller 10 constitutes the hair intermediate the ends and base of the hair when finally styled.
For long hair, -third roller 12, which it will be recalled has a diameter larger than the diameter of roller 10, may be employed in a like manner as roller 10. Particularly, and as seen in FIG. 4, roller 12 is inserted axially about the roller assemblage comprising rollers 10 and 14 such that the rolled hair extending from about roller 10 is received through opening 20 within the slot 18 of roller 12. This three roller assemblage can than be rotated t0 roll the hair about the outer wall of roller 12 to provide an even larger diameter roll or curl. Additional larger diameter, slotted rollers can be employed for extremely long hair in a like manner. It will be noted that the hair extending through the slot of the final and largest diameter roller cooperates with the roller assemblage to effectively look the assemblage from movement thereby eliminating the use of additional pins, clips or the like.
As an additional feature of the hair styling device hercof, the rollers may be axially staggered with respect to one another, as seen in FIG. 5. This eflects an axial staggering of the curls about the various rollers as the hair is set whereby a cascade or spiral type curl is more easily and readily formed.
In FIG. 6 there is illustrated the resulting cascade or spiral type curl formed by the previously described set of rollers. As will be appreciated, the larger diameter curls indicated at 32 are formed by the hair about the intermediate roller 10 while the smaller diameter curls indicated at 34 are formed about the smaller diameter roller 14-. As illustrated, a uniform curling action as well as a tight uniform spiral is effected. Moreover, the smallest diameter curl occurs at the very tip of the hair and this is typical of the spiral or cascade hair style.
Accordingly, the objects of the present invention are fully accomplished in that there has been provided a hair styling device effective to provide long cylindrical tight curls. The device is particularly effective for currently popular styles such as the cascade or spiral style for long hair and the curly stype for short hair. By the present invention, moreover, a firm tight and very small diameter curl at the end of the hair is provided by unique concentric arrangement of the diametrically graduated rollers hereof.
What is claimed and desired to be secured by U.S. Letters Patent is:
1. A hair styling device for forming hair in spirally arranged cascade curls comprising:
a first cylindrical roller, said roller adapted to have the end portion of a look of hair rolled thereabout, said look of hair being rolled from the end thereof toward the central portion thereof, said roller walls having a plurality of ventilating openings, said openings lying in axially and mutually spaced locations about said walls;
a second cylindrical roller, said second roller being hollow and having a greater diameter than said first roller; said second roller having a single hair-receiving slot extending through the wall thereof in a longitudinally axial direction, said slot opening at only one end of said second roller and extending for a distance of about of the length of said roller and terminating short of the opposite end, the end edges of said slot diverging outwardly one from the other; said second roller walls having a plurality of ventilating openings, said openings lying in axially and mutually spaced locations about said walls; said second roller adapted to telescopically receive said first roller with the end portion of said look et hait rolled thereabout so that when said first and second rollers are substantially concentrically disposed to one another with the rolled end portion of said look located therebetween, the central portion of said look extends from said first roller through said hair-receiving slot in said second roller whereby the central portion of said look may be rolled about said second roller from the central portion toward the base thereof.

The device of claim 1 further comprising a third roller, said third roller being hollow, and having a larger diameter than said second roller; said third roller having a single hair-receiving slot extending through the wall thereof in a longitudinally axial direction, said slot opening at only one end of said third roller and extending for a distance of about 90% of the length of the roller and terminating short of the opposite end, the end edges of said slot diverging outwardly one from the other; said third roller walls having a plurality of ventilating openings, said openings lying in axially and mutually spaced locations about said walls; said third roller adapted to telescopically receive said first and second rollers in concentric arrangement with the end portion of said look rolled about said first roller and the central portion of said look rolled about said second roller With the base portion of said look extending from said second roller through the hair-receiving slot in said third roller, so that the base portion of said look may be rolled about said third roller.
3. The hair styling device of claim 1 wherein said rollers are formed of plastic material.
4. The hair styling device of claim 1 wherein said rollers are formed of metal material.
