BRAGKET HOOK.
No. 361,634. Patented Apr. 19, 188.
N. PETERS. Plmm-Lmw NITE OLIVER S. J UDD, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
BRACKET-=HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,634, dated April 19, 1887. Application filed December 4, 1886. Serial No. 220,638. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER S. J UDD, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bracket-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hooks of the class which are designed to hang upon moldings, such as are ordinarily used on house-walls; and the main object of my improvement is to make the eye or curved end of said hook stand out from the wall, so as to adapt it for use as a bird-cage hook or for a hanging basket and the like, while at the same time it is hung upon an ordinary wallqnolding.
Another object of my improvement is to simplify the construction and lessen the cost of production.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my hook, together with a vertical section of the molding upon which it hangs. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my said hook; and Fig. 3 is a view corresponding with Fig, 1, but showing a slight differencein form.
A in Figs. 1 and 3 designates the vertical face of the wall or support,to which the molding B is attached.
0 designates a base or plate designed to rest against the wall at a point below molding, and having the upper hooked end, a,-which is designed to hook over theinolding B in hanging the hook.
b designates the eye or curved end of the hook, which is designed to receive and hold such objects as it may be desired to hang upon the hook. This eye or curved end I) is on the outer end of an arm,so as to carry it some distance from'the wall and out from under the upper hooked end, a. Such arm may be cast or otherwise formed in one piece; but I prefer to form it of wire doubled upon itself, one end or part of the wire forming the part 0, while the other forms the brace d. The part c, I
rivet into the base or plate C, while the brace d, whose end is curved, as shown, I secure between two lugs, h h, which, after receiving the curved end of said brace, are clinched or bent The only differdown to hold it, as shown.
ence between the forms illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 is that the brace d is above the part0 in Fig. 1, and below said part in Fig. 3.
It will be seen that by extending the plate or base 0 down below its upper hooked end and carrying the outer end of the arm having the eye I) away from the wall and out from under the upper hooked end of said base C, the pressure or weight sustained by the eye I) is brought to bear against the wall A and the upper edge of the molding B, with a sort of bracing action, by reason of which I term my device a bracket-hook.
I am aware that short S-shaped hooks have been made for hanging upon moldings, and inasmuch as my hook has this same adaptation I have assigned it to the same class; but so far as I know these prior hooks, when attachable to and detachable from the ordinary wall-molding, had the eye or curved end by which pictures or the like were hung located directly underneath the end that hooked over the molding, and they were, therefore, more suspension-hooks,having no base or other part which was designed to press against the wall. Said prior hooks are hereby disclaimed.
I am also aware that prior patents show coat and hat hooks fitted and permanently secured to a special cleat or molding, and partly held in place by a hook at the upper edge of the strip and with the plate or base of the hook resting upon the face of said strip. All of said prior art is hereby disclaimed.
I claim as my invention 1. The device herein described, consisting of the molding-hook, the depending base, and the laterally-extending arm or arms terminating in a hook at the outer extremity, all substantially as shown and described.
2. In a brackethook, the plate or base having the lugs h h and the laterally-extending arm, formed of wire, with the curved end of the brace d secured between the lugs h It, all substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
OLIVER S. JUDD.
