SAMUEL N. \VASHBURN, OF UNION, OREGON.
LASTING-M'ACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 361,473, dated April 19, 1887 Application filed August 7, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL N. VVASHBURN, of Union, in the county of Union and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Lasting-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved lastingmachine which is simple in construction and effective and rapid in operation.
The invention consists of jaws which grasp the leather on each side of the last, of central arms which rest on the bottom of the last, and of adevice which closes the jaws and imparts a swinging motion to the same.
The invention also consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line mm of Fig. l.
The lasting-machine is mounted on the frame A,which consists of two side plates, B B,each provided with a downwardly-extending arm, 0, and of the top cross-plates, D and D',which connect the'side plates, B and B,and of which the upper plate, D, has in its center an upwardly-projecting guidearm, E, on which slides the frame F, having the arms F,extending downward on each side, and to the lower ends of each of said arms F is pivoted an arm, G, provided on its end with a gripping device, which consists of the rigid jaw G, to which is pivoted the jaw G The latter jaw, G", has an arm, G to which is secured one end ofaband, H, which passes under a guide-arm, G, attached to the arm G and is thenwound around and secured to a shaft, I, mounted to revolve in the side plates, B B, of the frame A.
Each of the shafts I is provided on one end with a gear-wheel, J, which meshes into a pinion, J, attached to a driving-shaft, K, provided with ,a crank-arm, L. A ratchetwheel, M, is secured to the shaft K and enplate, 13, and apointer or finger, O, is placed Serial No.210.2207. (h 'o model.)
loosely on the shaft K and rests with its outer I end in a spiral groove, P, formed on the outer end of one of the shafls I.
The operation is as follows: The ends of the leather to be stretched are placed between the jaws G and G" on each side of the last Q, and the arms (J are rested on the last, as shown in Fig. 2. The operator then turns the crankarm L in the direction of the arrow 11, whereby the gear-wheels J are rotated and their shafts I commence to wind up the respective leather bands H, so as to close the jaws G and G, whereby the ends of the leather are securely gripped. By further turning of the crankarm L, and the consequent winding up of the bands H on the shafts I, the jaw-arms G are each drawn upward and inward simultaneously, and stretch the leather tightly over the last Q. The sliding of the frame F on the guide arm E permits the said upward movement of the jaws G and G.
When theleather is stretched sufficiently over the last Q, the turning 'of the crank-arm Lis stopped, and the pawl N engages the ratchet-wheel IVL'SO as to hold the latter and the jaws G and G in their respective positions. The pointer 0 indicates the number of revolutions of the shafts I. The operator then fastens the ends of the leather to the last in the usual manner, and then turns the crank-arm L in the opposite direction, so asto releasethe grip of the jaws on the ends of the leather.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a lasting-machine, the combination of a frame provided with downwardly-projecting arms and revolving shafts mounted in thesaid frame, with a gripping device operated from the said shafts, all arranged substantially as shown and described. v
2. In a lastinginachine, the combination of a frame provided with downwardly-extending arms, shafts mounted in the said frame, and a device for rotating the said shafts, with a gripping device operated from the said shafts, and a frame sliding vertically on the main frame and carrying the said gripping device, all arranged to operate substantially as shown and-described.
3. In a lasting-machine, the combination of ICC the revolving shafts I and the bands H,with a 1 end of said pointer O, substantially as shown gripping device consisting of the pivotedjaws G, connected with the said bands H, and the jaws G, rigidly attached to the pivoted arms G, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a lasting-machine, the combination of the revolving shafts I and the bands H with the jaws G connected with said bands H, the rigid jaws G, the arms G, carrying said rigid 1o jaws G, and the sliding frame F, having the arms F, to which the said arms G are pivoted, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a lasting-machine, the combination of the shaft K, carrying the crank-arm L, the pinion J, and the gear-wheels J, with the pointer O, placed loosely on the said shaft K, and the shafts I,one of which is provided with a spiral groove, P, in which rests the outer and described.
6. In a lasting-machine, the frame A, provided with the upwardly-extending arm E and the downwardly-extending arms 0, the shafts I, revolving in the said frame A, and the bands H, each secured by one end to one ofthe said shafts I, in combination with the arm G provided with the guide-arm G, the pivoted jaw G the rigidjaw G, the arm G, and the sliding frame F, provided with arms F, to the lower ends of which are pivoted said arms G, carrying the gripping device, substantiall y as shown and'described.
