Description

(No ModeL} W. 1. HARGRODER] HARROW.
Patented Apr. 19, 1 887.
3513 GHQ M12130 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
WILLIAM IRA HARGRODER, OF CHURCH POINT, LOUISIANA.
HARROW.
SPECIFICATION formmg part of Letters Patent No. 361,284, dated April 19, 1887.
Application filed January 28, 1887. Serial No. 225,799. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM IRA IIARGRO DER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Church Point, in the parish'of St. Landry and-State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harrows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in harrows; and it consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of parts, fully set forth hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved harrow. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation thereof.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters denote corresponding parts in all the figures, Ais a triangular barrow-frame consisting of the rear cross-bar, B, and the 0011- verging side bars, 0, to all three of which bars are secured the depending narrow-teeth D.
E is a central draft-beam secured at its front end between the front ends of the side bars, 0, and at the rear end tothe center of the cross-bar B, to the center of which draft-beam are secured the front ends of the plow-handles F, having the usual braces, G, the lower ends of which are secured to the rear end of the said draft-beam.
H is a plow-standard secured to the draftbeam E, near the rear end thereof, and, curving over the cross-bar B, is provided on its lower end with the cultivating-shovel I.
To the front of the central draft-beam, E, which projects a short distance beyond the apex of the triangular barrow-frame, is secured a downwardly and forwardly extending standard,K, having the blizzard-wing or sweep L attached thereto. Said buzzard wing or sweep consists of the wide-spreading arms M, converging to a point'in front of the standard L, and having the free outer or rear ends thereof on a level with the point. The point at the front of the blizzard-wing is set somewhat -lower down than the barrow-teeth, and the front edges of the arms M are comparatively sharp.
N is a vertical guide-post, also secured to the front projecting end of the draft-beam E and having the vertical slot 0, in the sides of which post are a series of transverse aligned openings, P, adapted to receive the bolt R.
S is the draft-chain, which passes through the guide-post N under the bolt R, and is se cured at the rear end to the draft-beam EJoy means of the link T, the perforated ends of which are placed on either side of the draftbeam and pivotally secured thereto by the bolt U, passing through said perforated ends and one of the transverse openings V in the said draft-beam.
The function of the buzzard-wing is to clear the surface of the soil of all grass and weeds, and its mode of operation is to cut down in the soil under the grass and throw it out, whereupon the barrow-teeth, following closely after the blizzard-wing, break the clods and leave a smoothfine surface. The plow-shovel I is to be used only in the sowing season to form a furrow to sow the seed in. At other times the standard may be detached from the draft-beam, to which it is merely bolted.
The depth to which the blizzard-wing cuts may be regulated by adjusting the bolt R in the aligned openings Pin the guide-post N, it being obvious that the higher the said bolt is placed the deeper the buzzard-wiug will out.
It will readily be seen that by attaching the draft-chain to the draft-beam some distance behind the front thereof, I am able to make use of the weight of the fore part of the ma chine to hold the buzzard-wing down to the work. This is of advantage, also, in an ordinary harrow, as when the draft chain or pole is secured to the front of the machine the draft-animals have a tendency to lift the said fore part and prevent the proper working thereof.
I provide a central draft, which will materially assist the proper working of the parts.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. In a harrow, the combination of the toothed frame having a central longitudinal draft-beam, a depending standard at the front end of the frame, a wing or sweep, L, carried by the standard and extending'laterally therefrom, and a draft-chain connected to the draftbeam atan intermediate 'point of its length and passing through a guide on the frame, as
and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a barrow, the frame A, central draft beam, E, and buzzard-wing -or sweep L, combined with the draft-chain S, attachable to the said draft-beam at any point between the center and front end thereof, and held from side motion by the vertical post N, in which the said chain is vertically adjustable, substau tially as described, for the purpose set forth.
3. In a harrow, the triangular harrow-frame A, the central draft-beam, E, handles F, buzzard-wing 0r sweep L, attached to the front
