Definitions

  • ABSTRACT A bedstead has a rigid frame which supports a spring mesh.
  • the spring mesh is secured to the frame by adjustable anchoring members.
  • the adjustable anchoring members can be operated to vary the tension of the spring mesh while it is supported on the frame.
  • the present invention relates to supports in particular for beds, sofas, armchairs and the like.
  • the present invention provides a resilient, generally flat, support provided with a plurality of anchoring means attached to the perimeter of the support at spaced intervals therealong for attaching the support in a rigid frame, said anchoring means including a plurality of adjustable anchor members for varying the tension imparted to he support when supported on said rigid frame.
  • the present invention further provides a bedstead, comprising a frame, a resilient mattress support, and anchoring means attaching the mattress support to the frame, the anchoring means comprising a plurality of adjustable anchoring members each providing three anchoring seats, the distance between one of the seats and another of the seats being different from the distance between the one seat and the third seat, each anchoring member being movable between a first position in which the said one seat engages one of the frame and the support and the said third seat engages the other of the frame and the support.
  • FIG. I is a fragmentary plan view of the bedstead
  • FIGS. 2 and 3 are fragmentary sections through the bedstead of FIG. 1 respectively showing different adjustment positions of a mesh thereon;
  • FIG. 4 is a plan view on the line IV-IV of FIG. 2;
  • FIG. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view of a modification of part of the bedstead.
  • FIG. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view of another modification of part of the bedstead.
  • FIGS. 1 to 4 show a bedstead frame 1 and a support mesh 3 which is secured to opposite sides IA of the frame 1 by a plurality of anchoring means which extend between holes 7 provided in the sides 1A of the frame and corresponding eyelets 3A provided in the support mesh 3.
  • the support mesh 3 includes an array of elongate spring elements whose shape in the plane of the mesh is undulating and which are linked together by a series of hook members.
  • Each anchoring means comprises a fixed anchor member 5 and an adjustable anchor member 9.
  • the fixed anchor member 5 has a hook 5A which hooks into a corresponding one of the holes 7, and a hook 5B which engages the adjustable anchor member 9.
  • the adjustable anchor member 9 has a lever arm 9A and three anchoring seats in the form of bent portions 93, 9C and 9E.
  • the three portions substantially define the apices or a partial triangle and the angle defined by each bent portion is less than 90.
  • the apices defined by portions 98 and 9C are spaced apart by a greater distance than the distance between the apices defined by the portions 9C and 9B.
  • the anchor member 5 engages the portion 9C of the anchor member 9 while the eyelet 3A of the spring 3 is en gaged by the portion 98.
  • the distance of eyelet 3A of the spring 3 from the side 1A of the frame is determined by the distance between the apices defined by the portions 9B and 9C.
  • the lever arm 9A is located below the spring mesh 3 and lies substantially parallel with the spring mesh 3.
  • the lever arm 9A is displaced in the direction of the arrow fl of FIG. 2 to move the member 9 from the position shown in FIG. 2 into the position shown in FIG. 3, the hook 58 will disengage the portion 9C and engage the portion 9E. Simultaneously the eyelet 3A will be disengaged by the portion 9B and engaged instead by the portion 9C. As a result the eyelet 3A of the spring 3 is drawn closer to the side 1A of the frame 1. Thereafter on moving the lever arm 9A in the direction of the arrow f3 of FIG. 3, the adjustable anchor member is returned into the position shown in F IG. 2.
  • the mesh support 3 can be either tightened or slackened on the frame I.
  • adjustable anchor members 9 are used to support opposite sides of the mesh support 3 then three degrees of tightening or slackening of the mesh support can be attained, one when the anchor members 9 on both sides of the mesh support 3 take up the position shown in FIG. 2, one when the anchor member 9 on one side of the mesh support 3 take up the position shown in FIG. 2 and the anchor members on the other side of the mesh support take up the position shown in FIG. 3, and the third when the anchor members 9 on both sides of the mesh support take up the position shown in FIG. 3.
  • the mesh support 3 can be secured to sides of the frame I which lie perpendicular to the sides IA by anchoring means such as those as hereinbefore described in addition to resilient springs 11 which are normally provided.
  • adjustable anchoring member 9 is provided with more than three bent portions so as to provide three or more adjustment positions for each anchoring member.
  • the bed frame 11 is of rectangular section and has a flange 11X defining an eyelet.
  • the means for anchoring the mesh support 19 to the frame is an adjustable anchor member 19, which can be similar to the member 9 of FIGS. I to 4, and which simultaneously engages an eyelet of the mesh support and the eyelet in the flange IIX.
  • the sides 21 of the frame are tubular and provided with holes 23 each of which can be engaged by a member 25, which can be similar to the member 9 or 19. In the two positions of adjustment the portions 25A and 25B of the member 25 are respectively in engagement with the hole 23.
  • a support assembly comprising a rigid bed frame defining an opening, a generally flat mattress support, anchoring means attached to a perimeter of the support at each of spaced intervals along said perimeter at one anchoring seat of one of said anchoring means, and also attached to said frame at another anchoring seat of said one of said anchoring means, said anchoring means thereby being supportable of said support in said opening, each anchoring means further comprising first, second, and third anchoring seats, distance between said first and second seats being different from distance between said second and third seats, in a first setting position said first seat being supported from said frame and said second seat forming an attachment of tee anchoring means to the support at said perimeter, in a second setting position said second seat being supported from said frame and ,said third seat forming an attachment of the anchoring means to the support at said perimeter, and said anchoring being adjustable by twisting movement from said first setting position to said second setting position.
  • each anchor means further comprises an elongated element having at least three bent portions, each bent portions defining an acute angle and thereby forming a respective one of said first, second, and third anchoring seats, said first, second and third seats respectively comprising first, second, and third bent portions respectively, and an extension of said anchor means being utilizable as an integral lever arm twistably operable to move said anchor means to and from said first and second setting positions.
