Abstract

APPARATUS FOR EFFECTING A PEENING OPERATION IN WHICH THE PEENING ELEMENTS ARE CONFINED IN STRUCTURE AS COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL "FREE THROW" METHODS. SPECIFICALLY THE SUBJECT APPARATUS IS ADAPTED TO PEEN THE SURFACE OF A CIRCULAR BORE OR PASSAGEWAY IN WHICH RECIPROCAL MOVVEMENT IS IMPARTED TO THE PEENING ELEMENTS BY ROTATION OF AN ACTUATING MEMBER OF NOVEL CONSTRUCTION. COMPLETE COVERAGE (PEENING) OF THE AFOREMENTIONED BORE IS INSURED IN THAT ROTATIONAL AND LENGTHWISE MOVEMENT OF THE HOUSING OR CASING IS MANUALLY IMPARTED THERETO.

Refeffing to the dfavvingS, a pfefeffed embodiment of the peening too1 11 aS diSc1oSed hefein iS Shown in FIG. 1. The tool 11 iS 11ti1ized to peen a passageVvay 12 of cifculaf cfosS-Section pfovided in the St1Jctufe 14.
The too1 11 includeS a face aSSen1bly 16 having innef and oufef diaInetefS X and Y, feSpectively, With a p1Ll fa1ity of peening e1eInentS 17 Inonnted thefein and a plungef Inen1bef 18 funcfioning to eXcife the eleInentS 17.
The ovefaH conngufaHon of the membef 18 is beSt Seen by fefeffing to FIG. 3. The maximum diametef of the membef 18 is sIlCh that it haS a ffee (funning) f1t with feSpect to tho inside diafnefef of the face aSSefnb1y 16. The onfef sufface of the membef 18 iS pfovided With coffugations de11ning a p1ufaty of high and 1ow pointS aS indicated by fhe numefalS 18 and 21, feSpectively. A bore 22. cifcu1af in cfosSSecti0n, eXtends thfoughout the 1ength of the nlefnbef 18, the aXiS of the bofe coinciding With the aXiS of the membef 18.
