No. 853,660 Claims priority, application France, Oct. 10, 1968, 169,336 Int. Cl. G09f 5/04 US. CI. 35-59 6 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Folder for determining in advance the effect which a color-changing product will have on natural hair comprising a back cover sheet carrying all the colors which may be obtained with any of a group of products, and intermediate sheets, each carrying a natural hair color and a cut-out making visible some of the colors on the back cover.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION When products for changing the color of hair are sold directly to the public it is necessary to make available to those using such products means enabling them to determine, in view of their natural hair color and the particular product selected, the shade which will result after this product has been applied to their hair.
It is obvious that the problem is the same, regardless of whether the product is a hair dye, a bleaching shampoo, a coloring shampoo, or any other analogous product.
In order to permit users to determine the results which they may expect if they use this or that coloring product, manufacturers have undertaken to provide the public with folders which show the colors of natural hair and the shades which may be obtained by starting with these natural colors, and applying this or that product selected from the range of coloring products sold by that manufacturer.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a new article of manufacture which consists of a folder adapted to permit the user of a coloring or bleaching product to determine from the color of his natural hair the shade which will result from the application to that hair of one of the products of the range of cosmetic products in question. This folder is essentially characterized by the fact that it consists of several sheets connected together at one edge to form a booklet. One of the outside or cover sheets, hereinafter identified as the back cover, carries colored representation of all the shades which may be obtained by applying each of the products within the range of commercial products in question, and the other sheets are provided with cut-out portions through which a certain portion of the surface area of the aforesaid cover sheet may be seen, and with a colored representation of at least one natural shade of hair, each colored representation on the back cover being accom panied by the name or other identification of the product by means of which that product may be identified.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the folder consists of two cover sheets of the same format, one carrying all of the colored representations of the shades which may be obtained on natural hair by using the range of products in question, and the other serving as a front cover for the folder. The intermediate sheets are cut out so that the area cut-out increases from the intermediate sheet closest to the front cover to the intermediate sheet furthest from the front cover, and are provided with colored representations of natural hair colors positioned in a progressively darker order, the lighest color being on the intermediate sheet the furthest from the front cover.
In another embodiment of the invention, at least one intermediate sheet in the folder, and preferably the sheet which is furthest fromt the front cover, carries colored representations of natural hair on both sides. In general, it is preferred that the color representations of natural hair on the other intermediate sheets be on the side of the sheet which is closest to the front cover of the specimen folder.
Finally, in a preferred embodiment of the invention the colored representations of the shades of natural hair and the shades. which may be obtained by application thereto of the range of products in question, are locks of hair, which are clipped to the sheets of the folder. Moreover, the cover which carries all the locks corresponding to the shades which may be obtained by application of the products in question also carries these looks in an order which makes it possible to scan from the lightest lock to the darkest lock in a substantially continuous and progressive manner. Preferably, of course, the arrangement of the locks is such as to avoid the juxtaposition of two locks the colors of which may be inharmonious. In this preferred embodiment it is possible to arrange the darkest locks near the bottom of the back cover and the lightest locks near the top. The intermediate sheet which is furthest from said back cover is cut to make visible the darkest locks on the end sheet and carries at least one lock of natural hair the color of which is selected from among the darkest known shades. The next intermediate sheet has a larger cut-out area than the preceding sheet so that a larger portion of the back cover carrying the looks displaying the darker colors which may be obtained with the product in question may be seen therethrough. Said intermediate sheet carries at least one lock of natural hair lighter than the lock carried on the preceding immediate sheet, and so on up to the last intermediate sheet adjacent the back cover which carries locks of natural hair on both sides, those locks on the side facing the back cover being lighter than the locks on the opposite side.
In order that the object of the invention may be better understood, one embodiment of a folder according to the invention will now be described purely by way of illustration and example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing the folder according to the invention open to show the first intermediate sheet and the darkest locks of the back cover visible through the cut-out in the said intermediate sheet;
FIG. 2 shows the folder of FIG. 1 open to the second intermediate sheet;
FIG. 3 shows the folder of FIG. 1 open to the third intermediate sheet;
FIG. 4 shows the folder of FIG. 1 with the third intermediate sheet lifted so that all the locks on the back cover may be seen.
Referring now to the drawings, it will be seen that reference numeral 1 indicates the front cover of the specimen folder according to the invention. lReference numeral 2 indicates the back cover. Between the front cover 1 and the back cover 2 are three intermediate sheets bearing in order reference numerals 3, 4 and 5. The sheet 3 is the closest to the front cover 1 and the sheet 5 is the closest to the back cover 2, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are connected together along one edge by a conventional ring binder 6.
The front cover 1 carries on its front side the instructions necessary to identify to the user the range of commercial products for which this folder may be consulted.
The back cover 2 carries the locks of hair 7, which locks represent all the colors and shades which may be obtained by using the range of products indicated on the front of the front cover 1. Each lock 7 is associated with indicia 8 telling the user which product within the range in question will enable her to obtain the shade shown by the associated lock. On the back cover 2, the locks are so arranged that the darkest lock is at the bottom and to the right of the sheet on the drawing, while the lightest look appears at the top and to the left. The shade changes progressively from the darkest to the lightest shade.
It will be appreciated that the intensities of the colors of the locks mounted on the back cover 2 are not necessarily arranged in a strictly continuous progression. There may be several inversions in the progression with respect to the shades of the locks and the indication given as to the method of arrangement of the locks is purely qualitative.
The intermediate sheet 3 carries a lock of natural hair 9 corresponding to a relatively deep shade among naturally existing shades. Above this lock 9 is an identification 10 which indicates to the user that this is the sheet which she should use if the color of her hair is identical to that of the lock 9. The sheet also carries directions 11 telling the user that all of the locks of hair on the back cover 2 which can be seen beneath the sheet 3, that is to say which appear in the cut-out portion of the sheet 3, correspond to shades which the user may obtain by applying one of the range of commercial products in question.
The intermediate sheet 4 carries in like manner two locks of hair 12a-12b which correspond to natural shades. As in the case of sheet 3, it carries directions 10 and 11 serving the same purpose as those hereinbefore described in connection with sheet 3. The cut-out portion of the sheet 4 is larger than that of sheet 3 so that this cut-out makes it possible to see a larger number of locks '7 on the back cover 2.
The intermediate sheet carries on its front side two locks of hair 1311-131) corresponding to natural colors as well as directions and 11 analogous to those which have been described in connection with sheets 3 and 4. The cut-out portion of sheet 5 is larger than that of sheet 4 so that the sheet 5 makes it possible to see a larger number of the locks 7 on the back cover 2 than was the case with sheet 4.
The sheet 5 carries on its rear side two other locks 14a14b representing natural shades, as well as the instructions 10 and 11. When the rear side of sheet 5 is visible there is no intermediate sheet which conceals any of the locks on the end sheet 2.
When the user wants to make use of such a folder she opens it up to the intermediate sheet which carries a lock having a shade of natural hair identical to that of her own hair. The cut-out portion of the sheet selected in this manner discloses on the back cover 2 all the shades which the user may obtain by applying to her hair one of the products selected from the range of commercial products for which the specimen folder is designed. The user determines from among the locks 7 thus disclosed which one gives a shade corresponding to the shade which she desires to obtain for her own hair, and reads above the locks 7 the identification or name 8 of the product of the commercial range in question which must be used. It is accordingly obvious that, in a general manner, only a certain number of shades selected from among those which are not clearly lighter than the starting shade may be obtained by beginning with a given natural hair color, and these are the possible shades which the intermediate sheet corresponding to that natural shade makes visible.
What is claimed is:
