SAW-SETTING TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part 'of Letters Patent 110.360.2382, dated April 12, 1887. Application filed October 20, 1886. Serial No. 216,606. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. HOTCHKISS, a c1t1zen of the United States,residing at Bridgeport,in the county of Fairfield and State of Conwill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain novel and.
useful improvements in tools for setting sawteeth, and has for its object to provide a handtool which shall set the teeth of a saw rapidly and satisfactorily; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements, hereinafter fully set forth, and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my lnvention appertains may fully understand its construction and operation, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, referring byletter to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement; Fig. 2, a similar view, but partly in sec tron, showing the hammer forced back; Fig. 3, a perspective of my improvement, and Fig. at a plan view.

A is a frame having projecting therefrom a handle, B.
C is a slot within said frame, in which the saw-teeth are inserted, as will be presently explained. D is a yoke pivoted to said frame, and E a set-screw on which said yoke rests.
F is a gage pivoted at the side of the frame,
and adjustable by means of set-screws G, which I act against the tail of said gage.
H is the anvil, which is secured to or formed integral with the frame.
I is the hammer,whicl1 is pivoted within the frame by means of a pintle, J. Around this pintle are coiled springs K, secured at one end to stops L, the other ends abutting against the hammer I in such manner as to hold the latter in its normal position.
M is the setting-punch, which is threaded, and is adjustable within the hammer.
N is the operating-lever, pivoted to the frame, and having pivoted in its forward extremitya pawl, 0, adapted to engage with a notch, P, in the lower portion of the hammer below its pivotal point.
Q is a coil-spring arranged underneath the pawl, and adapted to throw the forward end of the same downward in its normal position.
The operation of my improvement is as follows: The saw is placed with the teeth within the slot C against the anvil, and the yoke D is adjusted to graduate the position of the saw in accordance with the length of the teeth and in relation to the punch. The gage F is operated by means of the screws G, in order to determine the vertical adjustment of the blade and the consequent degree of the set. The lever N is now operated to cause the pawl O, by reason of its engagement with the notch P, to force the hammer backward. When the hammer has been forced backward so that the pawl has passed beyond the notch, the action of the springs K will throw the hammer with great force against the saw-tooth, and thereby completely effect the setting of the same.
The upper part of the ham mer-face is so constructed that when it rests against the anvil the axis of the threaded punch is perpendicular to the plane of the anvil-face.
The lower face of the hammer is cut away, allowing of the adjustment of the punch for different thicknesses of saw-teeth, so that at the completion of each blow the upper part of the hammer-face brings up against the anvil, and the faces of the punch and anvil are always parallel when in their normal position and separated by a distance equal to the thickness of the saw-teeth to be set.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. In a hand-tool for saw-setting, the combination, with a frame having formed therewith a handle and slotted to admit the saw, of an anvil secured within the frame adjacent to the slotted portion, a lever pivoted within said frame,vand having pivoted in its forward end a pawl, a hammer pivoted between the sides of the frame and notched at the top above the pivotal point thereof, a spring adapt-- ICO when said handle and lever are compressed, substantially as set forth.
2. In a hand-tool for saw-setting, the combination of a frame slotted to receive the saw- 5 teeth, and provided with an anvil, a gage secured to said frame and adapted to graduate the position of the saw in accordance with the length of the teeth and in relation to the haminer, means for determining the vertical ad- IO justment of the blade, spring-actuated hammer pivoted within said frame, and means, as a lever, pivoted to said frame, for operating the hammer, substantially as set forth.
3. In a hand-tool for sawsetting, the con1- I5 bination, with a spring-impelled hammer pivoted within a frame, and notched, as shown, of a lever pivoted to said frame, and having attached thereto a pawl adapted to engage with the notch in the hammer, whereby when said lever is operated the hammer will be forced backward against the resiliency of the spring, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a hand-tool for saw-setting, the combination, with the anvil, of the hammer having its face cut away, as shown, and the punch 25 arranged in said hammer and adjustable therein, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of the frame having therein the slot 0, and anvil II, gages I and adjustable yoke D, attached to said frame, hammer I, pivoted within the frame, and having notch P, coil-springs K, setting-punch l\I within said hammer, operatingdevcr N, pivoted to said frame, and pawl O, pivoted within said lever and adapted to engage with said notch, substantially as set forth.
