SPLIT PULLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,645, dated April 5, 1887.
Application filed January 24, 1887. Serial No. 225,329. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY BAUTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Benton Harbor, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Split Pulleys; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters and figures of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in adjustable split pulleys, and it has reference particularly to that class of split pulleys in which the clamps for grasping the shaft are bolted to the respective sections or halves of the pulley and connected together by clamping-bolts, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
The invention has for its objects to provide an inexpensive and effective device by means of which the pulley may be readily and truly secured to shafting of various sizes; and with these ends in view it consists of certain novel features of construction, which will be fully hereinafter explained and claimed.
In the drawings annexed, which fullyillnstrate my improved pulley, Figure 1 represents a side elevation; Fig. 2, an edge view of one section of the pulley detached, and Fig. 3 a side elevation of one pair of the clamping devices detached from the pulley.
Referring to these drawings by letters, A designates the two sections of the pulley, which may be of the ordinary or any approved construction, and are separable, so that they may be placed upon or removed from a shaft with facility, there being a recess or cavity in each section for the passage of the shaft.'
Upon the side of the pulley, at its center, a pair of clamping-plates, O 0, preferably of circular form when put together, are adj ustably bolted by means of the bolts a, passing through slots in the said plates, there being two slots to each plate. Projecting laterally from the face of the clamping-plates are flanges D, the inner faces of which are grooved or angularly concaved for the purposeof grasping the shaft firmly when drawn together by the clamping-bolts.
Through apertures in the side extensions or cars, D, of the flanges 1) pass the clampingbolts E, which serve to draw the two parts of each pair of clamping-plates together upon the shaft, and by means of which the pulley may be adjusted to suit various sizes of shafting. Interposed between the ears D of the flanges, and provided with apertures for the passage of the clamping-bolts, are packingplates F, which serve to relieve the parts of strain when the clamping-bolts are tightened.
The advantages of the packing-plates F will be apparent when used upon wooden pulleys, as in that case the strain upon the parts must be light, and these packing-plates form a firm bearing.
It is manifest that the number of packingplates will be increased when a larger shaftis used and decreased when a smaller shaft is employed.
Formed upon each side of the sections 0 of the clampingplates, and projecting somewhat beyond the inner faces of flanges or cars D of the same, are the lugs or extensions G, which overlap and rest in recesses on thefaces of the adjacent sections, (7. The object of these lugs is to keep the pulley sections or halves in a perfect plane with each other and prevent any movement on their part when the pulley is applied to a shaft.
It is evident that the lugs G may rest upon the faces of the plates C, instead of in recesses.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the sections of the pulley, of the plates 0 0, adj ustabl y bolted'to the said sections and provided with perforated and grooved flanges, the plates 0 being provided with the lugs or extensions Gr, which overlap the faces of the plates 0, and the bolts passing through the perforationsin the flanges of the plates and securing the plates adjustably together, substantially as described.
