Description

(No Model.')
J. COGHRANE.
WAGON BOX.
No. 360,562. Patented Apr. 5, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES COGHRANE, OF DERBY TOWNSHIP, COUNTY OF GREY, ONTARIO,
CANADA.
WAGON-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,562, dated April 5, 1887.
Application filed November 11, 1886. Serial No. 218,598.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES COOHRANE, of the township of Derby, in the county of Grey, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, farmer, have invented certain new and useful 1m provements in Wagon and Sleigh Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to construct a wagon or sleigh box so that its bottom, sides, and end-boards may be readily and rigidly put together or separately detached from each other; and it consists, essentially, in forming the bottom, sides, and end-boards independent of each other, a hook-and-eye connection being provided to connect each side to the bottom, and dovetailed plates fastened to the ends of the sides to receive the ends of.the boards, which are rigidly secured to the bottom of the wagon by screwed rods, all the parts being arranged and constructed substantially in the manner hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure 1 is aperspective view of my wagonbox. Fig. 2 is a similar view with one'half of the end-board removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail of the front board. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail of the tail-board.
In the drawings, A represents the bottom of the wagon-box made independent of the other parts. B are the sides, also made independ ent of each other and of the bottom A. O is the front board, and D the tailboard.
At or near the center of each of the sides B a strap, E, is rigidly secured. At the bottom end of this strap E is formed an eye, a, designed to fit over the hook F, which is rigidly fastened to thebottom A, as indicated. More than one strap E may be used, if desired; but for all practical purposes one strap for each side will be sufficient. Near each end of each of the sides B, I securely fasten the plate G,with the dovetailed groove formed in it to receive the dovetail formed on each of the brackets H,.secure1y fastened to the ends of both the front boards, 0, and tail-board D, as indicated;
It will be noticed that the tail-board is divided vertically in two, and that the two parts are connected together by hasps b, which are hinged on one part and have staples d fixed to the other part, the said hasps being held on their respective staples d by the vertical rod I, which passes through the staples d, and is screwed into a nut suitably held in the bot- (No model.) tom A. The front board, C, is secured in position by the rod J, which passes through clips attached to the said front board, 0, and is screwed into a nut held in the bottom A in the same manner as the nut into which the rod I is screwed.
Vith a view to providing means for deepening the wagon-box, I secure on the outside of each of the sides B a plate, K, having a dovetail groove cut in it designed to receive the lids L, which are secured to a board, M, as indicated. Each side B may be thus deepened, and the plates K also provide means for securing racks or any other device which may be desired to be applied to the wagon.
From this description it will be seen that one man or boy may without difficulty move a wagon-box from the vehicle, and he can with equal facility p uttheparts together in the manner shown. It will also be understood thatas the tail-board D is divided in two, one end may be removed at a time, so that potatoes or other contents may be readily removed in baskets without permitting any to drop on the ground.
WVhat I claim as my invention is-- 1. A wagonor sleigh box consisting of sides B, each having a strap, E, with an eye, a, fixed to it, and plates G, having dovetailed grooves, in combination with the hooks F, secured to the bottom A, and front board, 0, and tail-board D, each provided with dovetailed brackets H, engaging the grooves in the plates G,- sub" stantially as and for thepurpose specified.
2. A wagon or sleigh box consisting of sides B, each having a strap, E, with an eye, a, fixed to it, and plates G, having dovetailed grooves, in combination with the hooks F, secured to the bottom A and front. board, 0, tail-board D, with dovetailed brackets II, and screwed rods I J, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. A wagon or sleigh box having a divided tailboard,D, one part of which has hasps I) hinged to it to engage with staples d, fixed to the other part, in combination with the screwed rod I, passed through said staples and screwed into a nut in. the bottom of the box,
substantially as and for'the purpose'specified.
Toronto, October 28, 1886.
