COMBINED CANE AND UMBRELLA.
FJPECIE'ICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,544, dated April 5, 1887.
Application filed November 51, 1886. Serial No. 5218.4 .13. (No mode.) Patented in France May 5, 1856, No. 175,997.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that we, PAULINE VERRIER and JACQUES EDOUARD BONNEVAUX, citizens of the French Republic, residing at Paris, in said French Republic, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Canes and Umbrellas, (for which we have ob tained Letters Patent in France, N 0. 175,997, dated May 5, 1886,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is asectional elevation of a combined cane and umbrella or parasol embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a like view of the lower portion of the cane provided with a stiletto or sword, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the lower detachable end of the cane for use with a stiletto or sword. Fig. 4 is a like view of the lower end of the cane itself constructed for use without the stiletto or sword. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line at z of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation of a portion of the cane with the umbrella or parasol mounted thereon for use. Fig. 7 is a section taken on line y 3 of Fig. 6. Fig. Sis a sectional elevation of the cane and umbrella or parasol, showing a modification in the construction and mode of securing the umbrella or parasol for use. Fig. 9 is a like view of the umbrella or parasol stick shown in Fig. 8, showing the means for securing it to the cane when'the latter is not provided with a stiletto or sword; and Fig. 10 shows in elevation the cane end provided with an extension having a bayonet slot or joint.
Our invention relates to a combined cane and umbrella or parasol wherein the cane serves as a handle or stick to said umbrella or parasol; and it consists in structural features and combinations of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully described, and as set forth in the claims.
In the drawings, 0 indicates the cane, which is hollow and composed of three sections, 0 0 C of which 0 is the upper or handle sec tion, provided with a locking pin or stud, c, that engages a locking-notch or a groove, 0*, formed in a bead at the upper end of section 0 as shown in Fig. 1. At the lower end of section 0 is formed a bearing or partition, to
which is fixed a stiletto or sword, S, which has a locking stud or lug, 3, adapted to engage an angular slot, 8, formed in a sleeve, 0, secured in the lower or ferrule section, 0", of the cane C. By means of the lug on the stiletto or sword S the section 0 is firmly locked to the cane-section G by means of a bayonetjoint. If it is desired to dispense with the stiletto, the sect-ion C is provided with a tubular extension, 0, Fig. 4, that has a locking stud or lug, 5', adapted to engage the bayonet-slot s in the sleeve 0 of the ferrule section 0, to lock the latter to section 0*, as will be readily understood.
The umbrella U is composed of a short tubular stick, A, near the upper end of which is secured the crown-plate, to which the ends of the ribs R are pivoted in any usual manner. As shown in Figs. 6, 8, and 9, this crownplate is'formed by annular flanges 1), formed on a tubular or solid pliig, P, secured in one end of the tubular stick A of the umbrella,
the ribs pivoted thereto being confined by a ferrulescction, A, of the stick A, which terminates in an annular flange, a, and is screwthreaded interiorly to be screwed upon the upper end of the plug 1. The stays B are pivoted to the runner r and to the ribs R in any usual or preferred manner, and the stick A is of such length that when the umbrella is open the runner will occupy the lower end of the stick, as shown in Fig. 6.
The umbrella is secured to the cane O as follows: The handle-section 'C is removed and the umbrella or parasol withdrawn and opened and the handle-section 0 replaced. The ferrule-section is next removed and the stiletto or sword introduced into the umbrella-stick A, so that the lugs thereof will lie in the vertical branch of the angular slot a formed in the lower end of said stick A, and in a vertical slot, (Z, formed in a locking-sleeve, D, r0 tatably mounted on the stick A above the runnor 1', and said stiletto or sword is then pushed up until the lug thereon registers with the horizontal branch of the slot a in the stick A.
A slight turn is now given to either the stick or cane-section G to carry the lug s into said horizontal branch of slot 06", when the lockingsleeve D is rotated to move its slot d out of U this case secured in the cane-section.
register 01- coincidence with the vertical slot a, the umbrella or parasol being thus securely locked to the cane, which constitutes the real handle therefor, as shown in Fig. 6. \Vhen the stiletto is dispensed with, then the extension 0* on the cane-section (3' performs the function of the stiletto to lock the umbrella or parasol to the said eanesection 0 as will be readily understood.
In Figs. 8 and 9 the stick of the umbrella, instead of being seated on the cane-section, has an angular locking-slot, (t and is inserted into the cane-section and locked thereto by a bayonet-joint, the locking stud or lug being in In this case the stiletto or sword S may be employed or not, as desired. In practice it is contemplated to provide for each cane both an umbrella and parasol of like construction, and adapted to be interchangeably used according to the weather or season.
It is obvious that by withdrawing the umbrella or parasol from the cane the latter may be used as such, astrong light cane being thus obtained.
XVe propose to make the cane of metal, yet we do not desire to confine ourselves to this material, as other suitable material may be employed.
\rVe are aware that canes have heretofore been used as convenient holders for umbrellas. \Ve are also aware that provisions have before been made to adapt the cane for use as an umbrella-stick and at the same time as a receptacle for storing the umbrella or parasol, and we do not desire to claim these features, broadly.
Having now particularly described our in: vention, what we claim isl. A combined cane and umbrella comprising a hollow cane composed of a handle and ferrule-section and an intermediate section, said ferrulesection having an interior tube provided with a bayonet slot, and the intermediate section a locking lug or stud eo-operating with said slot to lock the two sections together, and an umbrella adapted to be in closed within the handleandintermediate sections, and constructed with a short tubular stick provided with a bayonet-slot to adapt it to be secured to said intermediate section in place of the ferrule-section, substantially as described.
2. A combined cane and umbrella comprising a hollow cane having a detachable handle and ferruleseetion and a locking device composed of a sword rigidly secured to one end of the intermediate section and provided with a locking-lug, and a tube rigidly connected with the ferrule-section, provided with a bayonetslot, said parts co-operating to lock the two sections together, and an umbrella adapted tobe contained within the cane, and provided with a short hollow stiek, also provided with a bayonet-slot, adapted to be secured to the cane by means of the sword in place of the ferrulesection, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a combined swordcane and umbrella, with the cane-section O for containing the umbrella, having at its lower end a sword, S, rigidly secured thereto, said sword being provided with a locking-lug, s, of the ferrule-section C and the tube or sleeve 0 provided with a bayonet-slot, 8, whereby said ferrule-section is firmly secured to the cane, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination, in a combined swordcane and umbrella, of the cane-section C", for containing the umbrella, a sword provided with a locking-lug, s, securely fixed to the lower end thereof, with an umbrella having a tubular stick provided with a bayonet-slot co-operating with the stud s to lock the umbrella to the cane-section, the umbrella-runner r, and the vertically-slotted sleeve D,mounted on the stick and cooperating with the lugsto lock the runner against movement when the umbrella is open, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 18th day of Octobor, 1886.
PAULINE ERRIER. JACQUES EDOUARD BONNEVAUX.
