A. H. POTTER. COMBINED WATCH GASE AND MOVEMENT PLATE. No. 360,477. Patented Apr. 5, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT H. POTTER, OF GENEVA, Sl/VITZERLAND, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE NEW HAVEN \VATOH COMPANY, OF NElV J ERSEY.
COMBINED WATCH-CASE AND MOVEMENT-PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,477, dated April 5, 1887,
Application filed July 2, 1886. Renewed March 1, 1887. Serial No. 229,375. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. POTTER, of Geneva, in the Republic of Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of my combined case-center and front movementplate from opposite sides. Figs. 3 and 4 are like views of my combined case-center, caseback, and rear movement-plate from opposite sides; and Figs. 5 and 6 are centralsections of my completed watch, and show, respectively, the construction where a separate case-back is employed and where the same is omitted.
Letters of like name and kind referto like parts in each of the figures.
This invention relates to certain i mprove ments in watches which are covered by two previously-filed applications for patents, Serial Nos. 168,586 and 196,502, and has forits object the providing of a watch having the construction described, with an exterior of gold or other precious metal; to which end my said invention consists, principally, as an improvement in watches, in a combined movement-plate and case center constructed in one piece from base metal and having the periphery of the casecenter portion covered by a shell of precious metal which is superimposed upon and secured to the same, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
It consists, further, as an improvement in watches, in a combined movement-plate and case-center constructed in one piece from base metal and having the periphery of the casecenter portion covered by a superimposed plate of precious metal, in combination with a bezel and a case-back which are constructed from precious metal and are fitted to and adapted to engage with said case-center por tion, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.
It consists, further, as an improvement in watches, in a combined movement-plate, casecenter, and case-back which are constructed in one piece from base metal and have the outersurfaces of the case-center and case-back 0 portions covered by a superimposed and at tached plate of precious metal, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
It consists, finally, as an improvement in watches, in a combined movement-plate, casecenter, and case-back which are constructed in one piece from base metal and hat e the outer surfaces of the casecenter and case-back portions covered by a superimposed and attachcd plate of precious metal, in combination with a bezel which is constructed from precious metal and is adapted to engage with said case-center portion, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown and described.
In the carrying of my invention into practice I employ a metal plate, A, which, by dies or other suitable means, has its edge turned upward at a right angle to its face, so as to form of the same an annular flange, a. The plate A forms one of the movement-plates of a watch, and the flange a the case-center of the same. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, said plate constitutes the front movement'plataand has its outer edge adapted to receive a dial, B, and is provided with a peripheral rabbet, a, that may he engaged by an ordinary glass bezel, C, while within the corners of the edge of said case-center portion are formed an outer and an inner rabbet,a"' and a", respectively, for the reception of a case-back, D, and a rear movement-plate, E.
\Vhen the plate A is used for a rear movement-plate, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 6, its outer face forms the case-back, the plate Econstitutes the front movement-plate, and the bezel O engages with the rabbet The plate A is constructed from brass, nickle, or other cheapor base metal, and for cheap watches will have its outer surface, together with the surfaces of the bezel and back, 0 when the latter is used, polished or electroplated in the usual way; but for finer grades of watches, where silver or gold cases are required, the bezel (or bezel and back) for'the same is (or are) constructed wholly from such precious 5 metal, and over the exposed surface of the base metal is placed a shell, a, which is made to conform to and fit closely upon the same, and
is secured in place by the ordinary process of sweating with soft solder. This is done before the rabbets are cut, by which means the fine metal will extend to and beimpinged upon by the engaging-edge of the bezel, (or casebaek,) so as to cause the entire exterior surface of the case to present a surface of fine metal.
After the case-center is completed, a pendant, F, of any usual construction, is secured within a radial opening, a that is provided for its reception. 4
The combined movement-plate and case-center shown is not claimed, broadly, herein, as the same is covered by a separate application for Patent, Serial No. 168,586.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. As an improvement in watches, a combined movementplate and case-center constructed in one piece from base metal and having the periphery of the case-center portion covered by a shell of precious metal which is superimposed upon and secured to the same, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. As an improvement in watches, a combined movement-plate and ease-center constructed in one piece from base metal and having the periphery of the case-center portion covered by a superimposed plate of precious metal, in combination with a bezel and a caseback which are constructed from precious metal and are fitted to and adapted to engage with said case-center portion, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
3. As an improvement in watches, a corn bined movementplate, case-center, and caseback which are constructed in one piece from base metal and have the outer surfaces of the ease-center and case-back portions covered by a superimposed and attached plate of precious metal, substantially as and for thepurpose set forth.
4. As an improvement in watches, a corn bined movement-plate, ease-center, and caseback which are constructed in one piece from base metal and have the outer surfaces of the case-center and case-back portions covered by a superimposed and attached plate of precious metal, in combination with a bezel which is constructed from precious metal and is adapted to engage with said ease-center portion, sub
stantially as and for the purpose shown and
