Description

UNITED STATES 4 PATENT OFFICE,
JAMES E. THORP, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,042., dated July 29, 1862.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JAMES E.T11oEP,of the city, county, andv State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Double-Acting Pumps; and I do hereby deelare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a central longitudinal vertical section of the cylinder and valve-boxes of a pump constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the lower valve-box.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
The object of my invention is to simplify the construction of double-acting pumps and afford facility for access to the valves. It consists in placing the two induction-valves and their seats within the same cylindrical or circular box or bore arranged transversely to the cylinder, a partition being provided in the said box or bore to form two suction-chambers; and it also consists in placing the two reduction-valves in a similar box or bore without a partition between them, but with a guard so arranged as to serve for both valves, the said box or bore forming a dischargechamber for both ends of the cylinder-and connecting both with the discharge-pipe.
To enable others to make anduse my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A is a casting constituting the cylinder and valve-boxes of the pump, the two valve-boxes consisting of cylindrical openings b b and c c, arranged transversely to the length of the cylinder. These openings are bored out true for 1 the reception of bushes B and C, which contain the valves D D and E E and their seats d d and e e', the bush B of the induction-valve box having the partition f, to divide the said box into separate suction-chambers, and the bush C of the eduction-valve box having, instead of such a partition, a guard, g, between its two valve-seats. The opening b b has two passages, h h', leading from it to opposite ends of the cylinder, and two passages, M', communicating with the suction-pipe at k, the latter passages communicating with the induction-valve ports j j in the seats d d', and openings being provided in the bush B to communicate with the passages 71. h. The opening c c has two passages, ZZ', which form communications between the ports m m in the eduction-valve seats e e' and opposite ends of the cylinder, and has a third passage, n, leading from it to the discharge-pipe connection, and an opening, o, is provided in the bush C opposite to the said passage n.
The valves are severally of the fiat kind, with flat faces and seats, and the seats are arranged slanting in opposite directions from the partitionf and guard g, the hinges of the valves being at the lower ends or sides of the seats. The hinges are each formed by making a cylindrical swell along the lower side of the valve and sliding it into a socket formed in the bush at the junction of the valve-seat and the partition or guard. AThis construction of the joints permits the removal of the valves by drawing them out end'wise from their respective bush after the removal of one of the two caps F F, by whicheach bush and its respective opening or box b b or c c are closed at both ends, theA said caps being secured in place by screw-bolts p p, screwing into the partitionfin the one case-and into the guard g in the other. These lbolts serve the additional purpose of securing the bushes in place, the ends of the latter being Hush with the portion of the casting surrounding the openings b b and c c. The valves are severally made with stop-pieces q q on their backs, to come in contact with the guard g and partition f, to
prevent them opening farther than is necessary, the partition f serving the purpose of a guard as well as of a partition to separate the suction-chambers.
This mode of applying the valves-both induction-valves in one box or bore and both eduction-valves in one box or bore-makes the pump much simpler than any other mode of applying the Valves in double-acting pumps of which I have any knowledge, and aiiords greater facility for access to the valves, as by taking oft` one of the caps either both induction-valves or both eduction-valves may be removed without disturbing either the bush. or the other cap. The arrangement of the valves, valve-seats, partition f, and guard g,in bushes with which they form parts of one casting, is a matter of convenience, as the partition, guard, and seats may be made of separate pieces Aand dovetailed int-o grooves provided for their reception in the openings b b and ce;y
but it is obvious the bushes have advantages over the separate construction of the said parts above mentioned.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of thel tivo inductionvalves or two eduction-valves, or each two, in one cylindrical or other circular box or bore situated transversely to the bore of the cylinder7 substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
2. The bushes B and C, each containing two valve-seats, and an interposed partition, f, or guard g, applied in combination With the said transversely-situated boxes or bores, substantially as herein set forth.
