SHEDDING MECHANiSM FOR LOOMS.
SPECIF ICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,398}dated IJl'arch 29, 1887.
Application filed July 16, H85. Serial X0. lILT-li. (No model.)-'
To all whom, it 722C11/fl07t0677b.
Be it known that I, \VARREN Z.Wooi)s'rooi;, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oar thage, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shedding Mechanism for Looms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to shedding mechanism for looms; and its object is to provide a cheap, simple, and durable mechanism for producing positive and accurate upward and downward motion of the harness-frames of a loom. This object I attain by the means illus: trated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Which Figure l is a view, in rear'elevatiomof a loom having the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail showing'the supports and guides for the jacks. Fig. 3 is a detail showing one of the jacks with its attached frame for holding the harness-frame. Fig.4 shows one of the spring-catches detached. Fig. 5 is a detail showing the cam-shaft detached. Fig. 6 showsone of the cams detached. Fig. 7 is a section of the devices longitudinally of the camshaft, showing the first jack raised and all others down.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in the several figures.
A is a frame for guiding the jacks. It is 3 5 composed of pieces a, mounted upon cross pieces I), which are supported upon posts 13. The pieces (6 are provided with lugs a a at each end, to prevent them from working endwise. To hold them down firmly, a piece, b", is secured by bolts or other suitable means at each end, so that by removing it the pieces a may be taken out. Said pieces are heldthe desired distance apart by means of lugs a a and a a, 820., to form the slotsa a' for receiving the jacks and for forming a support and guide for the upper ends of the same. O G are suitable boxings for the cam-shaft, which is placed at right angles to the slots a D is a jack having a slot, d, for receiving the hub of its operating-cam F and holding the lower end of the jack steady. Above this slot is a pin or projection, d, for receiving a non-frictional roller, (1, which works in the groove G ofthe cam, so asto be raised and loweredas the cam revolves, thus raising and lowering the jack.
E is a i'rame, having uprights e,provided with longitudinal slots 0, for receiving the harnessframe. The head-piece e of frame E is provided with spring'catches O, which havea slant- 6 3 ing-head, 0, to let the harnessframe slip down,
and a'straight edge, 0, to catch and hold the said harness-frame down. This frame F may be firmly secured to, but is preferably formed a part of, the jack.
F is a cam of any desired size and shape, having a hub,f and an opening, f, which is provided with a key seat or groove, f. The key-seat may be made at any desired angle with the axis of the groove G, as hereinafter 0 set forth.
G is a groove, made in the side of each of. the cams, of any desired size and shape, preferably elliptical in shape.
H is a cam-shaft, having suitable journals, 7 5 h h, and a beveled gear-wheel, K, to engage a beveled pinion, N, which is upon the lower or picking shaft, M. Said shaft H has a rib, It", to enter the groovesf of the cams, to hold them firmly in place and cause them to revolve so with the shaft. It is also provided withthreads and a nut, R, to tighten the cams F against a pin or key, h. The key-seatsf may be placed .at any desired angle with the line of the major axis of the groove G, which receives the non- 8 frictional roller 'for raising and lowering the jack. Thus, in the ordinary loom having five jacks, thekey-seats are placed, the first at any given point and the other four varying one fifth of the circumference, or seventy-two degrees, from each other and from the first as indicated by the dotted lines f f f ,and f and the groovef in Fig. 6.
The
- the groove in raising thejack, and against the other in descending, thus making a perfect motion. The cams and jacks may be easily removed and replaced by nnkeying the pieces b and loosening the nut R,which lets the plate or large washer S slip back,so that the key or pin h may be drawn. The removal of this pin allows the cams and jacks to be removed alternately, so that they may be repaired or replaced in a different order. The major axis of the groove G in the cam may be increased in proportion to the distance from the front of the loom, so that the shuttle may have the same space between the warp-threads at each pick. The shaft H may be made to receive any desired number of cams and jacks.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Aframe composed of posts 13, cross-pieces b b b b and pieces a a, provided with lugs a, a", and a, forming slots (0, 850., substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with shaft H, having a rib, h of gear-wheels K N, lower pick-shaft, M, cams F, provided with grooves G and keyseats f, jacks D, provided with slots d and non-frictional rollers (1 and frames A E, the latter having springs O, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a frame, A, having detachable pieces a,provided with lugs a a a, and means for securing said pieces a in position, with jacks D, having slots d and nonfrictional, rollers d frames E, having arms 6, with grooves e, springs O, cams F, provided with grooves G and projecting hubs a shaft, H, lower pick-shaft, M, and gear-wheels K N, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in prcsenceof two witnesses.
WARREN Z. WVOODSTOGK.
