HAND-POWER ATTACH MENT FQR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,376, dated March 29, 1887.
Application filed July -10, 1886. Serial No. 207,659. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES M. CosBY, of Elberton, in the county of Elbert and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand-Power Attachments for Sewing-Machines, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention, which is designed to be applied to sewing and other light machines capable of being operated by hand or foot power, relates to devices which provide either for operating the machine by foot through treadle or by hand through a lever operating in unison with the treadle; and the invention consists in a novel construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart ofthis specification,in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 represents a transverse sectional. elevation, upon the line 00.4: in Fig. 2, of a sewing-machine stand with my invention applied; and Fig. 2, a partly.-broken front view of the same.
A indicates the frame of a sewing-machine stand, and B its top or table.
0 is the usual treadle, fitted to rock upon a cross-bar, b, and serving to give motion by pitman c to the pulley d, with its attached fly- Wheel e, by which motion is communicated to the machine on working the treadle by the foot.
D is the lever through which the machine may be operated by hand. This lever, like other levers for the same purpose, is arranged upon the under side of. the table 13. Instead, however, of being hinged or pivoted to the underside of the table and being connected indirectly with the treadle, as in other contrivances of the kind, said lever D is preferably carried and has its fulcrum formed by an attached spring, f, which connects it with a bracket, secured to the under side of the table B, said spring preferably being secured to said bracket or carrier by a thumb-screw, h, adjustable up and down the bracket either by a slot thereon or by entering it in any one of a series of holes, 1', in the bracket, for the purpose of adjusting the connection between the lever and the treadle, as occasion may require. The lever D is directly connected with the treadle C by a special or extra pitman, E, the
upper end of which is attached to the lever D by a spring, is, and its lower end attached to the treadle by another spring, Z, through a block, m. These several springs f 76 Z may all be bent flat metal ones, and they serve to give to the whole hand-power mechanism a flexible and elastic character,which will give life even to the treadle when operating the machine by the treadle. Said springs, too, dispense with the noise, friction, and wear and tear which is incidental to pivoted or loose-jointed connections of the working parts of a hand mechanism,and render oiling of the working parts unnecessary.
When operating the machine by hand, the lever D is worked up and down,and the handpower attachment is so easy,springy,and light that it may be operated even by a child. hand attachment may either be worked by the person using the machine or by another, and either be operated as a driver conjointly with the treadle or independently of it, or the machine may be driven alone by the treadle, as occasion requires, and the whole attachment may readily be applied to almost any style or make of sewing-machine, 850., without chang ing or interfering in any manner with any part or parts of the machine to which itis applied.
If desired, instead of connecting the lever D with the bracket 9 by a spring, f, a different form of movable fulcrum may be usedas, for instance, a hinge adjustable by a thumb Said screw, it, on the bracket, as in the case of said movable spring-fulcrumbut the elastic connections kl between the pitman E, hand-lever D, and treadle C will remain the same.
- Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by- Letters Patent, is I 1. Ina lever hand-power attachment to machines also provided with an actuating-treadle, the operating-lever of the attachment having its fulcrum formed by an attaching-spring secured to or carried by a suitable fixture, substantially as specified.
2. In combined hand-power and treadle attachments to machines, the combination of the ICO ' lever D, having a spring-fuieruiii, f, and the special pitman E, adapted to connect said 1eciai pitman E, and the spring-connections is Z, uniting said pitman E to said lever and said :0 tread1e,respectivel y,substantia1ly as specified.
