BROILING-RANGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,372, dated March. 29,1887.

To all whom, it 1v1/cry concern.-
Be it known that we, ETTORE @ALONE and FERDINAND DAN'roN, residents of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broiling-Rangcs; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciiication.
Our invention relates to ranges specially adapted for broiling, and has for its object to so construct the range as that the smoke or vapors from thebroiling meats shall be drawn by a downward draft through the bedof coals., and be thereby consumed, and to prevent, consequently, the liability ofy the meats to burn and catch fire, obviate all smoke or odor therefrom, and relieve the cook from the need of giving constant attention thereto,as well as from exposure to the intense heat of the iire to which an attendant upon an ordinary form of broiler is subjected.
It has also for its object the conversion of the broiling-range into'an ordinary stove with facility, so that the apparatus may be used for cooking` in any desired manner. These objects are attained by the combination, in manner substantially as hereinafter described, with the nre-box and ash-pit of the stove or range, of a draft-chamber and line at the rear thereof, communicating directly with the chimney, and also, through suitable openings gov'- erned by dampers or valves, both with the ash-pit below the grate and with the upper portion of the fire-box above the grate, whereby the draft ordinarily created from the ash-pit upward through the fuel on the grate into the fire-box and out from above the fire to the chimney may be reversed, and caused to pass from the top of the stove downward through the fire-box and through the burning fuel on the grate, and thence from under the fire out to the chimney, and also, by the combination, with such a range or stove, of a sliding top adapted to cover and uncover the tire-box in manner as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of our improved range with the sliding top moved back in readiness for the use of the range in broiling, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof in the line x x ofEig. l.
A represents the outer casing of the range;
B, the fire-box, which is lined with fire-brickY as its conthe range does not differ essentially from many forms of stoves and ranges in common use, and it may be modified in these particulars,as well as in the proportions of its parts.
II represents a draft chamber or flue adapted to establish direct communication, when required, between the ash-pit E and the discharge-flue or smoke-pipe I of the stove or range, by which it is connected to a chimney. This draft chamber or flue II is separated from the rebox B and ash-pit E by a partition, preferably extending from the top plate to the bottom plate of the stove and from side to side thereof, and it is inclosed and completed by the rear plate of the stove, and by its top, side, and bottom plates, extended for the purpose, as shown in the drawings.
lThe upper portion of the draft-chamber H communicates directly with the smoke-pipe I, and through it with the chimney. It also communicates with the upper portion of the firebox,near to the top of the stove, by means of an opening, J, in the interposed partition, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby a direct draft may be obtained upward and outward from the ash-pit up through the grate and fire-box to the smoke-pipe I, in the customary manner common to all stoves. This draft-opening J is tted with a da1nper-door,a, by which it may be entirely or partially closed, as required. A second opening is formed in said partition immediately overthe grate D, whereby upon closing the aslrpit door and the damper A a draft may be produced from the top of the stove laterally downward through the fire, outward into the chamber H,and to the smokepipc I 5 and this opening is fitted with a perforated plate or grating, K, and also with a damper-door, b, by which itis openedor closed at pleasure. A third extended opening,L, is formedin the partition between the draft-ch ainber H and the ash-pit E,below the grate-bars D, whereby a downdraft may berereatedfrom above the bed'of fuel on the grate-bars down through the grate-bars and ash-pit, and thence outward through the chamber H to the smokepipe I. This third independent opening is also fitted with a controlling-damper, c, opening into the chamber H,asillustratedin Fig. 2.
A detachable broiler-grating, M, is tted to rest over the top of the fire-box B,immediately below the top of the range.
The Whole top or cover N of the range is movable, and is mounted to slide in suitable ways from front to rear,so as to wh olly uncover the fire-box B and broiling-grate H, when required. \Vhen pushed back, the top is supported partly upon thetop ofthe compartment Hand partly upon brackets P I), projecting rearward from the stove.
Access to the compartment H,for the puri pose vof cleaning it &c., is provided by means ofa side door, R. (See Fig. l.)
In the use of therange,the fuel is placed and the fire is kindled inthe customary manner in the fire-box B, the coke or coal covering not only the bottom grate, D, but also the rear grat-ing,l. It`,now,the range is to be used as a stove, the broiling-grate M is removed and the cover N is drawn forward over the fireboX, while the dampers b and o are closed and the front damper, G, or front door, F, of the range is opened. The draft is now carried in the usual manner from the opening at G or F through the ash-pit E, upward through the body of fuellying on the grate D,and out tothe chimney through the upper draft-opening, J, by whose damper a the consumption of fuel and intensity of the fire may be regulated.
NVhen the range is to be used for broi'ling, which is the chief end of its construction, the cover N is pushed back, as shown in the drawings, the broiling-grate M is fitted in place, and the upper damper, a, and the lower front door and damper, G, are tightly closed,while either or both of the dampers b and c are opened, as therrconditionY of the rire or the character of the article to be cooked may require. The draft will now pass from above the broilinggrate M, down through the body of coals upon the grate D, and out laterally through the openings in the grating-bars K, and also down between the grate-bars D into the aslrpit, and through the opening Linto the draft-chamber H, and through it to the flue I and chimney. This downward draft through the fire will carry with it the smoke from the cooking meat and from the drippings of fat therefrom into contact with the incandescent fuel on the grate, to be thereby consumed, instead of passing out into the room, while this downward draft of air will prevent also the heat from the ire from radiating upward into the face'and eyes of the cook when in attendance. Where the bed of coals is of but comparatively slight depth, the damper b is closed, as well as the upper damper, e, so that the draft is directly wholly downward through the grate D.
X/Ve claim as our invention- 1. The combination,with the tire-box, grate, and ash-pit in a stove or range, of a transverse partition interposed between the rear of the fire-box or ashpitaud the rear wall of the stove or range, to form a draftchamber eX- tending from top to bottom thereof, communicating by means of draft-openings in said partition both with the upper portion of the fire-box and with the ash-pit, dampers controlling and closing, respectively, each of said openings, and a smoke pipe or ue to connect the upper end of the draft-chamber with a chimney, all substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The coinbination,with the re-boX, grate, and ash-pit in a stove or range, of a transverse partition interposed betweenv the rear of the fire-box or ash-pit and the rear wall of the stove or range, to form a draft-chamber extending froni top to bottom thereof, communicating by means of draft-openings in said partition with the upper portion of the fireboX, the lower portion of the re-boX just above its bottom grate-bars, and with the ashpit, a grate fitted in the central opening, dainpers closing and controlling, respectively, each of the openings, and a smoke pipe or flue to connect th'e'upper end of the draftchamber with a chimney, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
3. The coinbination,\vith the iirebox, grate, and ash-pit in a stove or range, of a transverse partition vinterposed between the rear of the fire-box or ash-pit and the rear wall of the stove or range, to form a draft-chamber eX- tending from top to bottom thereof, communicating by means of draft-openings in said partition both with the upper portion of the fire-box and with the ash-pit, dampers controlling and closing, respectively, cach of said IOO IIO
openings, a smoke pipe or iiue to connect the upper end of the draft-chamber with a chimney, and a movable cover adapted to slide back and forth over the top of the fire-box, all substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
